A visit to the historic John Rylands library in Manchester. The images were taken in their reading room

Here is an aisle of books that have not been cataloged in the online catalog yet. Notice how books from this photo are shelved end to end on the shelf. There is no growth in this collection from our rare room, so there is no need to keep extra space on the shelves for new things. Items are filed using an older AGS regional classification system based on geography. When they're returned, they're classified using LC and end up in a different arrangement.

This past week, Gladstone Secondary students were able to participate in their own Human Library.

Members of the public and staff volunteered their time as “living books” for the day.

The shelves on the left back up against the baker's racks in the kitchen. They hold mass market SF/F/H. The shelves on the right hold trade-size SF/F/H. The cord provides power to the baking station power strip. At the end of the library is a linen closet festooned with cloth bags.

Peeking through a side gate, a view of the Multnomah County Library (also called the Central Library) which opened in 1913, and was one of the first libraries in the United States to feature an open-plan.

There's nothing like a guided tour to open one's eyes. I'd heard of the Portico Library, but didn't know where it was. But that's partly because the downstairs frontage in Mosley Street is a pub. The entrance is in Charlotte Street.

Opened in 1806, their web site says: "Leading exponent of the classical revival and architect of the earlier Liverpool Lyceum, Thomas Harrison was chosen to design the building. Builders David Bellhouse and Sons realised Harrison’s plans and delivered the resulting building for £6,881 5s. 3d."

Up a few flights of narrow stairs is this imposing reading room and exhibition space. Unfortunately the exhibition currently on prevented my showing the whole expanse of the interior. But see their web site for more details - and if you are local - visit and support it!
