Northfolk Naval Station, VA

Dec. 27, 2013

The third of the Wasp class of amphibious assault ships, it is named after a WW-II aircraft carrier that was in service well into the 1960s.

This Kearsarge was launched in 1992, and commissioned on May 16, 1993.

Not only does it have a flat deck, used for landing and takeoffs of helicopters, AV-8 Harrier attack jets and V-22 Ospreys, it also has bay at water level in its stern, that opens up to accommodate LCACs (Landing Craft, Air Cushion) vehicles that can carry assault troops to the beach.

Behind the Kearsarge, is the LHD 1 Wasp, in drydock.
