Also known as the Caledonian Station, this station stood at the west end of Edinburgh between 1870 to 1965. By the 1890s, with passenger levels rapidly increasing, the decision was taken by The Caledonian Railway Company to create a grand terminal for Edinburgh - one to rival Edinburgh Waverley.
Few remnants of Princes Street Station have survived since the 1960s, though fragments are still evident. The newly refurbished Caledonian Hotel, no longer under railway ownership, is an obvious example, with the cast iron gates here on Rutland Street now providing an elaborately styled hotel car park entrance.
Looking from the lower level of the maisonette towards the kitchen/dining area.
I have to admit I am a big fan of small level-changes within a space, especially when it is framed in (in this case by a wall-plane containing a small open coat-rack and the distributor for the floor-heating). This way, a relatively small space has various interior horizons and there is a clearly defined "here" and "there".
Stairs leading down to The Basement Discs (www.basementdiscs.com.au/index.html), Block Place.
Almost every old building in the central business district of Melbourne has a basement, primarily for storage purposes. The most common ones are made of brick, and feature arched walls and vaulted ceilings. Unfortunately, I was unable to gain access to my favourite one today, so I went to The Basement Discs to shoot today's topic instead.
The shopfront of this business, located one floor below street level, only takes up a small section of available space. The rest is private property (probably for storage purposes) and is sectioned off by posters and curtains. I chose this particular view because it gives a feeling of depth and hints at the solid style of architecture used in the basement area beyond.
Block Place, formerly known as Carpenter's Lane, was originally privately owned in the 1890s, but it was eventually covered by an iron and glass canopy and made public access to improve the experience of shoppers moving between Block Arcade and Royal Arcade. Block Place is listed on Victoria’s Heritage Register.
Over the last ten years, a myriad bars, restaurants and shops started springing up in these formerly neglected underground basements, injecting vibrant new life into the central city and creating new areas of interest for urban explorers such as myself.

Progress of works in February 2014 for the removal of the level crossing at Springvale. The bridge deck is complete and the new depressed line is being excavated and the new station is under construction, immediately to the north of the old one.
Works are to be completed during 2014.
Members of this Order of insects are extremely diverse. Many are small and agile flies as their name suggests. Some flies carry the tainted reputation for being carriers of disease such as malaria and yellow fever. Fly groups include crane flies, midges, gnats, mosquitos, black flies, horse flies, window flies, robber flies, bee flies, house flies, fruit flies, shore flies, dung flies, flesh flies and many others.
Robber flies are not to be trifled with. Capable of immobilizing bees, wasps and other insects larger than itself, robberflies catch their prey in mid air. As with other aerial predators, robberflies have excellent vision, characterized by two conspicuous compound eyes. The mouthparts of this family have been modified to a stabbing proboscis. Flies were revered by the ancient Egyptians who awarded a military honor in the form of a golden fly pendant.
Could be the next trend in wedding photos?
Flickr's "A Day in the Life" group had a "ground level" theme yesterday, so I thought I'd see what I could get...

USDA Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Dr. Homer Wilkes, U.S. Senator Cory Booker and White House Senior Advisor for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation John Podesta announced historic funding through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to expand access to urban nature, combat the climate crisis, and advance environmental justice, after meeting with local and state stake holders, April 12, 2023, in Newark, New Jersey.
The funding announced today is part of a $1.5 billion investment in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. The grant funding is available to community-based organizations, tribes, municipal and state governments, nonprofit partners, universities, and other eligible entities as they work to increase tree cover in urban spaces and boost equitable access to nature while bolstering resilience to extreme heat, storm-induced flooding, and other climate impacts. This historic level of investment will enable the Forest Service to support projects to improve public health, increase access to nature, and deliver real economic and ecological benefits to cities, towns and tribal communities across the country. Each floor in this building has its own color. This is obviously the green level . Yes, it really does look like this, and yes, people apparently still choose to live here :-)

In the past it was a centre of London - now it is still one of its most important landmarks. St Paul's cathedral is one amazing piece of architecture by Sir Christopher Wren!
