Multiple layers in this one, from foreground, middleground, to the background. The northern lakedistrict fells that overlook Ullswater taken from Barton Fell.

After the death of my Aunt Barney, my Uncle Doc gave me her car. This car has enabled me to work two jobs and to travel extensively. I always found it comforting that his former hospital parking sticker was still on the car. Today I found that sticker laying on my car seat. It had finally fallen off like a tiny leaf after a long, long time. Finding it there was bittersweet. It's one element that still connected the car to them. My uncle has since passed away as well. This car is the last gift I ever received from them. I'll miss this sticker being on the glass, but I'm keeping it in a special place.

I look at this and wonder how many years of history is represented between each layer in this rock.

Hey there! Yes, I'm still alive. Also still taking pictures, just not having enough time to edit and share them. Another internship is what keeps me busy.

Anyways, I hope everyone's having a good weekend :)

driving down a highway

the year is 2014,

listening to music from

1985 that I used to play

in my 1973 mustang

traveling along in

some sort of

emotional time machine

thinking of all the

years

people

thoughts

feelings

words

deaths

cities

and memories

all layered

one upon the other-

all contained within me

I become aware of an oppressive weight

bearing

down

on

me

it is difficult to breathe,

things shift out of focus

and I wonder if this is

what a heart attack feels like

I roll down the windows

speed up

and let all that old junk

flutter from my fingers

like confetti

You know, years ago I joined a Dancercise group. But it didn't take long for me to realize it wasn't really my thing. But what to do with the dance tights I bought?? No problem....I'm a veritable expert at repurposing specialty items. Two legs = two hoods! 😉

This is layer two for Daisy, and I think it will do fine as a base. Now...where did I put that pesky vet wrap?? 😜

when I posted this image in some groups on facebook, many friends spoke of the tall guy and his shadow...but to me his just one element in this image,to me it works because there are five elements in five different planes...

Without sea stacks or even coastal rocks to fill the foreground, it was time to go scouting. Lines in the sand left after a rainy day reminded me of layer cake at Heceta Beach, Oregon

On to the last few shots from my trip to the Lakes. It was absolutely freezing cold standing up on this hill, with a biting wind, but I could see the light moving towards these trees, so I knew I had to wait to get the shot. Fortunately, it didn't take too long, and I think the result was worth it...?

Layers of autumn color in shaded aspen groves.

Overall, the current Eastern Sierra Nevada fall color season has seemed less stunning than in the best years. The start was promising, with good high elevation color arriving on the expected schedule. But later on a number of areas that frequently offer up amazing color did not quite deliver. However, a few points are in order. Even in a less-than-astonishing year there is great color to be found if you just look around a bit. (And some of it is not in the usual iconic locations.) And a lot depends on the specific moment you arrive — the day and even the time of day.

This grove may serve as an example. We first spotted it while driving past in the early morning, when the sun had not yet arrived on this spot. We continued up the road a bit, thinking we'd turn around and photograph it a bit later. It turned out that "a bit later" produced some pretty uninspiring light on this subject... so we returned the next day and timed our visit more carefully. Photographing fall color in shaded light can produce a very different effect than photographing in full sun, with more color subtle and varied color with more shadow detail. This grove offered an additional compositional detail — the heights of both the small and large trees produced a sort of arch shape.
