Tasting Britain was back at Salvatoreâs Bar in The Playboy Club for the launch/relaunch/reprint of Salvatoreâs Calabrese âClassic Cocktails; (which has apparently sold over a million copies to date). As you can imagine, the book is a combination of cocktail recipe and cocktail history, and is pretty comprehensive on both counts (I have a copy). So yeah, if youâre a âbarflyâ or someone who with a more than casual interest in bars, bartending and cocktails, you may have heard of Salvatore Calabrese and his creations. You may have read an earlier print of the book. You may have even tried a few of his cocktails for yourself. And if you haven't, allow me to tell you about Salvatoreâs Bar and the exciting things to be found within...
Asides from its famous namesake, Salvatoreâs Bar might be best known for itâs somewhat ludicrous collection of rare spirits (and particularly its rare cognacs), proudly displayed in the barâs âliquid historyâ wall. Some of these drinks date back to the 1700s, and the collection is generally acknowledged as one of the worldâs best. The great news? You can drink them! The not great news? A cocktail made from one of these bottles could set you back as much as £2000 (or more) a pop! So, those who lack nigh-unlimited money to burn on drinking stuff that probably shouldnât exist anymore can simply admire these ancient bottles instead (and believe me, I did).
The Playboy Club itself was relaunched in 2011, I believe in an attempt to 'recapture the spirit' of their 1960s heyday. I canât tell you what it was like in the 60s, but I CAN tell you that it has certainly recaptured something. Upstairs is the memberâs area (no, I am not a member). Having only spent a brief time there (doing ârecon') Here you shall find The Casino (Bunny croupiers) and âPlayers Barâ, plus the Dining Room restaurant (of which I have now tried much of the food in canapé form and can say is pretty promising). Another thing that is wort

On Tuesday I was invited to join the media for a launch of Woo's new a la carte dinner menu on the 5th floor of the Toronto Life Square building.
The new menu has been brought in by new Exeutive Chef Christopher Kanka.
Around the table were folks from Taste TO, Dine.TO, Sun Media, and Juicy.
As you know, I don't normally go to restaurant media events because I feel it's important to maintain an arms length relationship with all restaurants, both in and out of the cheapEats price range. However, circumstances were such that I met the chef through a friend just a couple of days before this event so I didn't feel it would compromise things.

Loudlove close-out the event with a great show.

Wanderlost if full of dark berries that dominate the flavour and aroma, with generous additions of Blackberry, Dark Cherry, and Blackcurrant. The tartness is evident, but not overwhelming, and is a welcome balance to the upfront fruit with a warming finish that remind you this is one to be savoured.
