Any springtime visit to Grasslands National Park is almost certain to be a lark. Oops, I mean any visitor. Well, any little brown and yellow, winged visitor. I've never seen more Meadowlarks in one place and certainly never more of these constantly moving, fast flying Horned Larks.

More than a year ago already I posted an imago of a romantic couple posing on the rim of the Charyn Canyon (www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/49239492492/in/datepo...), a wonderful spot in the far east of Kazakhstan (and the most eastern point that I ended up during this journey, ca 100 kilometer close to the border with China).

After that shot we walked down into the canyon, along a very rough but also scenic path. We ended in this lovely oasis where the river the Charyn has carved its way through the rock formations with all those intense red and purple rocks. And where water is, arid landscapes turn green.

If you want to sleep in this place, there is a campsite and cabins to stay for the night.

20 September 2019 I came back from my journey over a part of the Silk Road to and through Central Asia. 4 months of traveling through 14 countries (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran) before I flew home from Teheran. An impressive journey in countries that are extremely beautiful, with lovely and welcoming people and diverse cultures and history.

Intense traveling with more than 20000 kilometers in our mobile home on sometimes roads that hardly could be called that way. We saw many villages and cities (some wonderful, others very ugly), countries that are transforming from the old Soviet era into something more related to older cultures and the way people live, often funded by oil readily available around the Caspian sea. We saw the amazing mountains south of the Black Sea, the wonderful Caucasus, and the high mountains in the far east close to China with peaks over 7000 meter, and not to forget the (Bulgarian) Alps!

We crossed the great steppe of Kazakhstan. a drive of at least 5000 km, the remnants of lake Aral, once one of the biggest lakes of the world, saw a rocket launch from Baikonur (this little part is Russian owned), we crossed many high mountains passes, and drove the breathtaking canyon that comes from the Pamir, beginning at ca 4500 meter, and going down for ca. 400km to an altitude of 1300 meter, driving for 100's of kilometers along the Afghan border.

And then the numerous lakes with all sorts of different colors from deep cobalt blue to turquoise, and one rare spectacle in Turkmenistan where a gas crater is burning already for more than 40 years. And finally and certainly not the least to mention an enormous amount of wonderful, hospitable and welcoming people. The woman often dressed in wonderful dresses, and bringing a lot of color in the streets of almost of all countries we visited.

AVIATION PHOTOGRAPHY DIGEST

An Osprey at the moment of takeoff

This church (on the fortress island of Suomenlinna, near Helsinki) was originally Russian Orthodox, but at a later point it was converted to Lutherian and its onion domes were knocked down, leaving it looking a little bit odd. It reminded me of a rocket on a launch pad.

A cool find from the desert. I think these are honeypot ants (Myrmecocystus sp.?), and I found the nest just as a batch of winged reproductives (called "alates") were launching. The big one is a female, and I'm guessing the smaller winged one to the left of her is a male. The whole colony, or what seemed like it, was rushing around the nest opening as if something had disturbed them. But instead, it almost looked as if they were excitedly saying goodbye to their winged relatives. Workers would rush up to the alates over and over, tapping them with their antennae before the alates flew off to try to found their own new colonies.

Fourth of July celebration in our neighborhood and the neighbor launches a luminary.

Jasper got the codes for Christmas and he's launching a full-on frisbee attack. Canine missile launched! Granted this is an ugly backdrop but thought the impressive leap was worth posting.

Brants at the same time I was...the next shot was her coming back around the corner towards me.

Launching from trees is one place I can get some good action shots! What a wingspan!

The SpaceX Inspiration4 was launced on 9-15-21 from the Kennedy Space Center and seen from Jetty Park (81 miles away) in Fort Pierce, Florida. It was the first all-civilian crew to orbit earth.

Early morning launch of Orbital ATK's Antares Rocket from NASA's Wallops Island facility taken from Oyster, on Virginia's Eastern Shore. This launch will use the Cygnus cargo freighter to resupply the International Space Station. Because of the length of the exposure you can see the stars trailing.
