This is because the city and its surrounding region belonged at various times to Germany.
PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - On Jan. 12 the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center's 229th Military Intelligence Battalion Company B held a change of command ceremony at the Presidio's historic Soldier Field. Outgoing Company B Commander Cpt. Kenneth R. French transferred responsibility to Company B Commander Cpt. Ryan M. Wempe with the traditional passing of the colors. 229th MI Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Kent Webber presided over the ceremony.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. – Service members mingled with celebrities on the Monterey Peninsula as Military Appreciation Day at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am took place Feb. 8. All law enforcement, firefighters and military personnel plus one accompanied guest were admitted free of charge on the day which features the popular 3M Celebrity Challenge. Once again this year, musician Kenny G selected service members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center to act as his caddy for the event. Many of the participating celebrities went out of their way to greet the large number of military that were in attendance as spectators and sign autographs.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center held a wreath laying ceremony Nov. 10 at the Presidio's Berlin Wall courtyard in honor of Veterans Day. DLIFLC Assistant Commandant Col. Keith M. Logeman and Command Sgt. Maj. Ryan J. Ramsey presented the wreath for an audience comprised of DLIFLC, Presidio, service units and community leaders.

This is one of my favorite places in Southeast Asia.
Luang Prabang (ຫລວງພະບາງ in Laotian or Louang Phabang), commonly transliterated into Western languages from the pre-1975 Lao spelling ຫຼວງພຣະບາງ literally meaning "Royal Buddha Image," is a city in north central Laos, consisting of 58 adjacent villages, of which 33 comprise the UNESCO Town Of Luang Prabang World Heritage Site. It was listed in 1995 for unique and "remarkably" well preserved architectural, religious and cultural heritage, a blend of the rural and urban developments over several centuries, including the French colonial influences during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The center of the city consists of four main roads and is located on a peninsula at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers. Luang Prabang is well known for its numerous Buddhist temples and monasteries. Every morning, hundreds of monks from the various monasteries walk through the streets collecting alms. One of the city's major landmarks is Mount Phou Si, a large steep hill which despite the constrained scale of the city, is 150 meters (490 feet) high, a steep staircase leads to Wat Chom Si shrine and an overlook of the city and the rivers.
The city was formerly the capital of a kingdom of the same name. It had also been known by the ancient name of Chiang Thong. It was the royal capital and seat of government of the Kingdom of Laos, until the Pathet Lao takeover in 1975. The city is part of Luang Prabang District of Luang Prabang Province and is the capital and administrative center of the province. It lies approximately 300 kilometers (190 miles) north of the capital Vientiane. Currently, the population of the city as a whole is roughly 56,000 inhabitants with the UNESCO protected site being inhabited by around 24,000.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Service member volunteers from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center team up with local community members and an estimated 3 million volunteers nationwide to "make a difference" Oct. 22 during Make A Difference Day 2011. This year more than 80 military volunteers from the Presidio left their language studies behind to join projects at Beta Park and a private residence, both in Seaside, as well as Marshall Elementary School located in the Ord Military Community. Held annually on the fourth Saturday of October, Make A Difference Day is sponsored by USA WEEKEND Magazine in partnership with the HandsOn Network and, according to their website, is referred to as the most encompassing national day of helping others.

Urmia or (Turkish Language: اورمو, Urmu, Orumiyeh, Urmiye, Urmiya) is a city in Northwestern South Azerbaijan (Iranian Azerbaijan) and the capital of West Azerbaijan Province. The city lies on an altitude of 1,330 m above sea level on the Shahar Chaye river (City River). Urmia is the 10th populated city in iran and 2nd of Azerbaijanian Turks provinces after Tabriz. Urmia is the trade center for a fertile agricultural region where fruit (Specially Apple and Grape) and Tobacco are grown.An important town by the 9th cent. Urmia was seized by the Oghuz Turks (11th cent.), sacked by the Seljuk Turks (1184), and later occupied a number of times by the Ottoman Turks.The name Urmia or Urmu is thought to have come from Sumerian tongue, the earliest known civilization in the world located in southern Mesopotamia. Ur was a principle Sumerian city. Some believe the name is derived from Syriac. Ur, meaning "cradle," and mia, meaning "water". Hence, Urmia, situated by a lake and surrounded by rivers, would be the cradle of water.The population of Urmia is predominantly Azerbaijanian Turks (over 90%), but with Kurdish,Assyrian and Armenian minorities.
Yesterday G. went to a birthday party for his good friend from preschool, shown in this picture. They got along great all last year, talked about each other at home, and he was thrilled to get the party invitation. His friend was really reaching out to him throughout the party, engaging him and wanting to talk and play, and he adopted this position of aloofness. Ah, the human condition.

The African continent is home to over 2,000 languages, yet they are scarcely represented in machine translation and communication programs. The after-effects of the colonial past are evident here in the lack of consideration for African languages. This development is counteracted by the organization *Masakhane* (isiZulu for "We build together"), which aims to contribute to Natural Language Processing (NLP) research. By focusing on African languages, Masakhane seeks to address the linguistic diversity of the continent and promote inclusive language technologies that empower local communities.
The goal is to make new language technologies accessible to the African continent and thereby achieve sustainable inclusion in significant technological discourses. The starting points for this are community building, participatory research, and multidisciplinary approaches—in line with the project's title, "for Africans, by Africans."

Being an international school, there were students from all over the world
at NUFS, meaning there were more languages than just Japanese and English.
Although this was the English language lounge, there were often people who
spoke French, Spanish, German, Korean, Chinese, and so on as well. Being
able to communicate with all of these people, despite having been raised
learning different languages, changes the way one thinks about
communication and how to use language to do so.
