The benevolent and wise Great Leader has always seen to it that tourists in the DPRK don't go home empty-handed. Here we have some publications, pamphlets, and postcards for fond memories of the visit. The Saturn one is especially apposite, as a trip to the DPRK often seems like visiting upon another planet. ;-)

Remember when you were little and played with mudpies? Wouldn't you have loved a Pallet Mud Kitchen like this one? This was our first attempt with no plans; just an idea and a bit of hope!

Pallet Mud Kitchen: Two pallets and some gifted accessories equal a lot of fun!

We recycled as much as we could to make this mud kitchen. We used two pallets to create the worktop and back board and some old center stringer pieces from pallets we had previously taken apart. The worktop was fastened together with small nails. The bottom shelf was a recycled shelf that once housed our fish tank! The whole thing was secured together with decking screws and painted in some really old varnish we found buried in the garage. The accessories were gifted or sourced at minimal cost! We are pretty pleased with how it came out; not bad for a first go with no design or plans!

A fun idea, indeed. Now how about an outdoor Kid's Bench?

These folks may or may not be soldiers - often uniformed workers do stuff like park maintenance, tree trimming, etc. The area is very well-kept, so no one is slacking.

This is Samjiyeon airport near Mt. Paekdu, the port of entry for tour groups exploring the area and folks on KITCs new aviation tours. A tour for aviation enthusiasts! Hey, at least KITC has some understanding of tourist psychology. :-)

Wanted one for ages. YOLO.

Mosaics are a common public art form. This mural is from the Kimilsungia and Kimjongilia Flower Exhibition, a quite peculiar exhibition. Kimjongilia is also the name of a documentary made by N.C. Heikin where life in North Korea is examined through interviews with North Korean defectors. Trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6gmAIP_WYg

This area looks almost "normal" except, of course, for the propaganda signs on the rooftops.

The Kim Channel always offers a gripping and inspirational line-up of programs showing farms and factories surpassing their production quotas, but sometimes there are reruns. This is when it's handy to have a stash of DPRK reading material around. Here we can read up on sports, temples, nature, and of course that monument that's taller than the one in Paris. ;-)

Tourism in North Korea is organized by one of 4 state-owned tourism bureaus, including Korea International Travel Company (KITC), Korean International Sports Travel Company (KISTC) and Korean International Youth Travel Company (KIYTC).

2014, Oct, I visited the North Korea for 5 days. It seems more than thousands Chinese tourist during national holiday. I carried my mobile phone and camera, it’s ok to take photography and interaction with local people as long as you don’t shot military.

I ceri non sono una consuetudine nei templi, probabilmente questa spianata di candele, con supporti un pochino kitch, è funzionale alla cerimonia in corso

Back in the mid 1980s I built a Domino Pimlico, 1275cc Austin Mini based kit-car for my then girlfriend. After we split up I sold the car to a lovely girl from Fulbourn, Cambridge who ran it for some time.

The reg number was DOE401C and it had a grey soft top.

I found a colour negative dating back to the time of build and scanned it.

It was a magnificent car to drive in the summer months with a serious turn of speed. I quite regretted selling it.

I believe it is no longer on the road, but if anyone recognises the number plate or the description please let me know.

This pic is the bodyshell being fitted out in the tiny garage I had in my old house near Nottingham.

As you will see from the next two pics, I now have another Pimlico to restore in my old age!

The local guide at Ri Song Gye - the leisure stay of the first king of the Li Dynasty (1870 - 1910). The raunchy stories about the king and his concubines made our guides blush while translating.

The engine has been running a little hot. It never dropped below 100C and under load was getting towards 105C (according to my gauge anyway). I've come to the conclusion that my original cooling system install wasn't quite right as it took the feed off the back of the head that would originally have gone to the heater valve straight back in the feed from the header tank. I also had a 0lbs cap on the rad and a 28-32lbs cap on the header tank. Originally I'd planned to blank off the heater valve outlet but became convinced that this may cause overheating issues at the back of the head. Having given it more thought I realised that blanking the port off is no different to driving with the heater turned off but more importantly, feeding straight back into the system at that point is recycling hot coolant back to the pump without it ever going through the radiator. With a a heater matrix in the way this would have a cooling effect on the coolant and be as good as putting it through the rad.

My original design is HERE.

I've now blanked of the back of the head and run the header tank direct to the back of the pump. I've also raised the header to its max height (only another inch) and added an 18-22lbs cap on the rad. This is due to my other concerns about firstly hot coolant always escaping back to the header and therefore reducing the flow through the rad plus the water level in the rad only getting to the top once pressure had built up.

I took the car out this evening and there was some improvement. The gauge still read 100 but it stuck there dropping to 95 off load. The fan also took a lot longer than normal to start up.

Other than also popping an even higher pressure cap on the rad to guarantee that all the water passes through unless the entire system is over pressurised, I think this is the limit of modifications I can make.

Next step is to get some louvres cut in the bonnet to let the heat escape

A good chap and the English speaking element on the tour. Our other Korean guide hadn't quite mastered English yet!

- Che dici, amò, co ste ali passo inosservato?

- ...

- No, perché vorrei fa' na cosa sobria, st'anno.

- ...

- Senti, aggiungo giusto uno scialle, un ponpon viola e qualche penna di pavone.

- ...

- Oooh! Ecco, adesso me sento me. Me metto pure gli occhiali da sole di mì madre e cosi avemo finito.

- .. allora si va?

- Feeeeermo! Guarda che strafigata 'sti pantaloni albicocca. Me li infilo, spé n'attimo.. Ao, come c'annamo lì?

- motorino?

- Paaazza!! Me se scompiglia tutto, e poi finisco tipo aquilone. No, no, senti a me: qui stamo a Tor Pagnotta, prennemo il sette e dodici, poi il nove e quindici, quindi la metro e semo arrivati.

- famo prima a annà a piedi..

- ma te ne esci così maschia oggi? ma nun ce lo sai che è il ghei prade? Prade, in inglese significa Prada!

- meno male che sai le lingue amò.

- Sù, uscimo, che me fai fa tardi!

Spé, magari passiamo in chiesa e prennemo quello de legno..

While cleaning up the engine I removed all the exhaust manifold studs with the intention of fitting new ones as they were pretty manky. When I ordered them from BMW they came to £47 for a set of 24 not including the copper nuts!!! I swiftly canceled that one but trying to source separately is not impossible but difficult as they are a weird M7 size and they were still going from around 1.50 each from scooter specialists (the only other application along with the citroen 2CV that uses this size).

One option was to re-tap the holes in the head to M8 to open up cheaper alternatives but with 24 to do I felt I was opening myself up to a costly mistake.

Following some advice from other builders on the MAKC forum I took off all the rotten nuts in the vice and dropped the studs in hammerite rust removed over night and here are the results after a quick clean up with a wire brush. Not perfect because the threads have been damaged by the rust on the exposed end but certainly reusable given the cost for replacements. I'll put them back in with the rusted end in the head. I'll still need to get new copper/brass nuts but this will be a lot cheaper.

The M50 engine throttle body takes a small feed of coolant from the engine to keep it warm in colder climates. As I don't live in a colder climate and have no intention of using the car in the winter, this isn't needed so I've made a small modification to the adapter on the head.

The inset photo shows the adapter itself which normally has a hose on. I wanted to just get a screw with the same thread to blank the hole off but this had my local fastener specialist scratching his head as the thread didn't seem to match any standard. To solve this I just ran an M8x1.25 tap down the hose end and popped in an M8 screw with some RTV sealant on the threads. You should really use a finer thread on applications where fluid is involved but as it is a low pressure system, the sealant should work.

I also cleaned up and reinstalled the two coolant temperature sensors with new washers. One tells the engine ECU what the temperature is and the other feeds the gauge on the dash. I'm not sure which is which. I will hopefully be able to use the dash one with the after market gauges if I can work out the calibration

Happy first day of spring!! My front lawn is a field of muscari (grape hyacinth) and moss. I'm not a fan of grass. The muscari is so fragrant, it's intoxicating. 1954 Ockelbo at Prins Bertil memorial.

I've been drawing up some diagrams of the donor cooling system connections to try and understand the flow of water. Not sure if this is correct. Pretty important to understand as I'll be removing the heater and throttle body connections and adding in a header tank as the Marlin rad doesn't have it build in like the BMW did.

How the coolant flows inside the block and head is an even bigger mystery
