No trip to the DPRK would be complete without sightings of Kim's weird animal sculptures, and Chongjin's Steelworks kindergarten offers up these artless and downright creepy furry animal sculptures. The cat, in particular, has a Stephen King vibe. ;-)

From the speeding tour bus...These brand-new buildings are home to P'yongyang's burgeoning elite population. Some of them very vaguely resemble the Watergate Complex in Washington, though. ;-)

This is a restaurant wing at the Majon Guesthouse, a beach "resort" near Hamhung. The bunglows have a Spring Break/frat party vibe to them, but no running water. The shops in the main building add to the tourist experience with the standard offerings of stale food and rotgut liquor. ;-)

Two of our guides on the specially chartered outbound flight to Hamhung. On this flight there was a total of 5 passengers...

Travelling like a VIP North Korean style - It's the only way!

This is Hamhung's central plaza, right across from the Grand Theater. A guy pushing a wheelbarrow is a common enough sight in China or even South Korea, but in the DPRK it's one of those rare, snap-worthy slices of "real life." A paparazzi formed, and started blasting away at him until (suprise!) the minders intervened. ;-)

Update the look of an existing structure by combining the rustic charm of pallet wood with modern surfaces like stone, granite and more. This Stone-Topped Pallet Outdoor Kitchen Counter is a perfect example of a budget-friendly way to update a look.

Pallet Outdoor Kitchen Counter - build your own to create an outdoor living area or update an existing structure without spending a lot!

First I disassembled four pallets with a hammer and a claw-foot crowbar. Project Dimensions: 49.6 "x 85" wide "L" bench x 0.6 " deep x 40.6" high. I stripped off the old covering on the L-shaped counter I had and added 1" x 3" boards for a place to mount the pallet wood to. Next, I began cutting the boards to fit, staggering the joints to give it a nice look. I installed the boards with screws. Finally, I sanded everything and applied a varnish to seal.

This is a simple, but effective way of updating a look quite dramatically for a minimum of expense. Just remove the old covering and recover with pallet wood![/caption]

[caption id="attachment_38325" align="aligncenter" width="600"]

This project is easier than it looks. Just take your time, make sure you're cutting everything evenly, and you don't even have to miter the corners if you don't want. This bar was all butt-joints at the corner, and it turned out great![/caption]

[caption id="attachment_38324" align="aligncenter" width="600"]

This was a family project - even my little dog decided to supervise for a while. :)[/caption]

You can use this idea for an outdoor bar area too![/caption]

Get the first row on straight, and the project moves ahead rapidly![/caption]

My outdoor kitchen is almost done, and it looks great! I need to finish the narrow side where you walk around into the kitchen area.[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_38319" align="aligncenter" width="600"]

Success! My project is complete with the thin edge at the entrance to the kitchen area complete. The updated look integrates well with the brick flooring.[/caption]

You can do this same idea to an old outdoor bar, or build a basic structure to CREATE your own pallet bar, too! Here are 6 Ways to Upcycle Items in Your Garden! With a gorgeous outdoor kitchen like this, you need a Sittin' Pretty Pallet Garden Lounge Set!

HDR image. 2 litre kit car registered in 1972 built on a triumph spitfire chassis I believe and in the style of a Ferrari Tipo 166 1940s race car. Seen in West London.

This is the exit of P'yongyang's Kaeson subway station - previously, tourists exited via Yonggwang (Glory) station after a shorter 2-stop ride. That exit area, however, is believed to be too decrepit to show off any longer. This photo was posted from an "adults-only" porn-enabled computer to avoid the ROK's firewall...and you can see that the passengers are indeed dressed quite provocatively (snicker) ;-)

This is in a remote part of Mt. Chilbo. There was, of course a drink stand at the temple.

This well-photographed guide map on the North Korean side of the DMZ instantly drew in the group's videographer and a camera-(but no cell phone)toting paparazzi. Everyone was blasting away at this guide map, and no one was stopping the picture taking. Oops, it's the DMZ - they WANT you to take photos here... ;-)

Look how happy these passengers are to set foot on the DPRK! Look at all the smiles! InSapphoWeTrust gets a big thank you for setting the record straight on the calendar, too - December 27th, the date of Kim's funeral, is also Constitution Day in the DPRK. Here we were thinking there might be conspiracy elements vis-a-vis a pre-set date. Conspiracy in a Confucian thug regime? N-E-V-E-R So, relax, enjoy, and come fly with Air Koryo. (There aren't many other options.) ;-)

This is near the entrance of the humongous Hung-nam fertilizer factory in the Hamhung-area. The bus driver barely slowed down much for us, but we did get some snaps of the factory.

It's a pretty quiet night here at the lounge/restaurant of P'yongyang Golden Lane Bowling alley. Diane Sawyer visited here in 2006, and the Eternal Leader Kim Il Sung & his entourage made a walk-though in late February, 1994 (less than 7 months before his death). It is not known whether or not he bowled a 300. To date, no "Big Lebowski" sequels have been filmed here.

Here we have a lovely sunset at P'yongyang's Sunan Airport, snapped just three weeks before the Late Great Leader KJI's mysterious death. Perhaps the sun is setting on the regime as well... ;-)

On another socialist dreary day in Wonsan, we wandered past this drab building, which has the "Wonsan General Store" on its first floor.

From the speeding tour van...This (possibly pork?) restaurant on Kwangbok Street has its sign emblazoned with both Korean and Chinese characters, so it may be a hangout for elite party people. The area is, of course, still quite drab. ;-)

This low-slung socialist green building houses a library, a tailor, a fruit shop, and a seafood ("marine products") retail outlet. It's the closest thing to a mall in the DPRK, and pretty much as good as it gets. It's on elite Kwangbok Street, but it does at retain that DPRK blandness. ;-)

It's a nice dreary day at the beachfront area near Wonsan's central plaza. The socialist lighting fixture looks like it's in good repair, but there is of course no power to illuminate it. ;-)

Volkswagen based car just rotting away in the driveway.

This is from the anti-Japanese group. In the south, there is graphic material like this at the Independence Hall museum in Ch'eonan. Kids see it on school field trips, but not until middle school. This is much creepier. It's a kindergarten.

This is the "General Store" at the showcase Tongbong Cooperative Farm. All the goodies are locally made and be purchased using Euros, so it works as a souvenir shop too. ;-)

Here at Wonsan's main plaza, the kids practicing with hula hoops did show up on cue. There was no wheelbarrow guy (wink wink), so shooting from the plaza was fine. The area is, however, quite drab and has a certain socialist, uh, erm, charm. ;-)

Here it's a sunny but chilly late November day at the Sariwon Folk Village, a pleasant area with models of historic sites and tree-lined paths. Inside the park, the locals can wander freely. Tourists cannot. ;-)

Second mic in the engine bay encased in some foam to try and balance the volume a little (lots of cam noise otherwise). I've since moved the mic closer to the intake as it's a little too muted

This was yet another astonishing and robotically flawless music and song performance. Creepier than the ones in P'yongyang - these are, after all, kindergarteners

It's Alive!

This is the second start actually. The first took at least 5 seconds of cranking before it caught. It sounds much less anti-social on this video than the reality which is seriously loud.

I couldn't take a longer film as I noticed a fairly stong smell of petrol and a steady trickle of liquid pouring off the bottom of the bell housing. Closer inspection with my nose confirmed that there was a fuel leak so I couldn't risk letting the engine or exhaust get hot so that's put a bit of a dampener on things.

As far as I can tell the leak is coming from the fuel rail pressure regulator so I've now taken the rail off and I'll order some new O rings. Hopefully that will sort things out.

In the limited few minutes I had to look at gauges etc before spotting the leak I managed to

- confirm the alternator was giving 14V

- oil pressure was at ~4 bar

- The rev counter does nothing which is a bit odd. May need to get a multimeter that can read the pulses.

- The fuel gauge reads empty. I put about 8 litres in the tank so I would have expected it to show something [EDIT] helps if you calibrate it on empty first, seems ok now though still doesn't pick up the 8 litres in the tank. I guess I'll have a sizable reserve to rely on.

As the temperature was around -1.5 and I had lost all sensation in my fingers I had to push it back in the garage to do the fuel rail work which of course means that the entire house stinks and will do for the next few days. I hate working with petrol.
