Every time I post a star photo, I try to think of something original to say about the experience of being forced to just stand there and look up at a cloudless and moonless night sky. I've used poetry, Calvin and Hobbes, and free writing as attempts at it, but they never really come all that close; in the end, you're just looking at another photo on Flickr on your computer, not at those little specks of light an unimaginable distance away, twinkling there whether you like it or not. That humbling experience is further amplified, I've found, with the camera: since the sensor can process so much more light than the eye can, the captured image reveals millions more stars than they eye that you can't see but know are there. It's really quite an experience; I hope everyone out there gets the chance to have it sometime.
Another interesting phenomena that I came across in this round of star shots was shooting stars. As we enter Shooting Star Season, they become much more noticeable to the naked eye while looking up, but I was astounded by how many more my camera captured that I didn't notice. In one shot, I had four trails appear in the scant 15 seconds that the shutter was open, none of which I recall noticing while taking the exposure. And to those of you who are wondering, no - they aren't airplanes; airplanes trails are much longer (in 15 second exposures like this one), choppier (from blinking lights), more colorful, and more consistent (they don't fade like this shooting star).
The final quick note worth sharing is that this was my first night out with my new Rokinon 16mm f/2. Wow is really all I can say - what a step up it is from my previous wide lens, the Sony 16-50 kit lens. Crazy sharp, really wide aperture, and just a blast to use. Loving it so far. I'm hoping to have some more photos from my first few days with it up here soon, since I've got a bunch that I don't have to time post here now.

Chow Kit Market is recognised as one of Malaysia’s most infamous landmarks. Located at the northern end of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, it is divided into two halves: the first half is home to the city’s unofficial Red Light District, while the other part is KL’s most popular local market. Even though it is not as well known to tourists, Chow Kit Market is definitely exciting. However it is not a place for the faint hearted, with vendors who are pushy and it takes a thick skin to get serious bargains here.
The spotlight on Chow Kit Market focuses on its main street: a lively and culturally-enriching scene. Although the area may not be the most kosher quarter of KL it plays host to the largest wet market in Malaysia. Also known as the Bazaar Baru Chow Kit, this rustic makeshift market is a kaleidoscope of colours and fragrances. The bazaar is shaded by oversized, colourful umbrellas and divided into a wet and dry section with the colourful souk commonly frequented by locals, especially the neighbourhood’s Malay community.

The kit zoom doesn't impress me much, hardly as worthy as Thor's Hammer. Thankfully, I now have a f1.8 50mm FD lens for next time!

This is a tiny drawing kit which I can carry in my 'working' waistcoat pocket wherever I go. I'm working on a colour kit, and the next stage is to organise a means of carrying it when I don't want to wear a scruffy waistcoat!
