I went yesterday to take photos of the eruption of Mt. Shinmoe, but due to rain and clouds I ended up with only an ash covered car and a few pictures of the nearby Kirishima Shrine.

These are the falls that appeared briefly in You Only Live Twice as Bond climbed the volcano. In the past, they were nice and cold, but a rebuild of the hot springs resorts upstream now dumps all the bath water into this stream, making it warm, bluish, and yucky. At least soap isn't allowed into the onsen baths. It has boosted algae growth on the rocks, though for the green color.
You can see cutouts of Sakamoto Ryoma around the area because he visited a hot spring here with his wife, Oryo, on what is said to have been the first wedding tour in Japan. Sakamoto is famous for working against the Tokugawa shogunate, for Imperial Restoration, and against foreigners on Japanese soil (攘夷 - joui) in the 1860s.

Photo taken by my Father of me (at the helm) and my brother Joe in the command chair on the bridge of the Battleship North Carolina in January 1985. Dad had just retired and the three of us took a fishing roadtrip to Cooper Santee in South Carolina. On the way home we went out of our way to see the battleship at Wilmington, NC.
The pantomime here is of us pretending to be Admiral Willis Lee and the Helmsman of the Battleship Washington as she steams into Battle at Guadalcanal to engage in the most dramatic gun battle of the Pacific War. In this, the Washington sank the Japanese Battleship Kirishima with her 16 inch guns. Washington was the North Carolina's sistership so the actual scene on the Washington (Scrapped around 1960) might have looked something like this. I'm sure there were many more on deck though, but this production was made on a very limited budget. Our expressions are supposed to be that of brave and grim determination. Don't take us too seriously.

Since a fence was built around this tree a few years ago, the moss has grown around the base as no one can climb on the roots to get their picture taken anymore.
