A sub-temple of Kennin-ji, only open for a few weeks each year in spring and autumn. Beautiful Kirishima tsutsuji (azaleas) to see there but the light was harsh for photos.

Lot-2406-67: Japanese battleship Kirishima, Kongo class, port view, 1938. Following the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, Kirishima sank on November 15, 1942, due to the damage she received. The battlecruiser Kirishima undergoing her major reconstruction between 1934 and 1936. Her three sister ships were also given such major rebuilds, and reclassified as battleships. The lead ship of the class, HIJMS Kongo, was ordered in 1910 and was the last major Japanese warship built abroad, being designed and built in Britain. She caused quite a stir when her details became known, for she totally outclassed in terms of speed, armour, and firepower, the battlecruisers (and indeed, most battleships, too) that Britain was building at the same time, for the Royal Navy!!

It was very appropriate for the name 'Misty Island' when we visited. It was in this area that the god Ninigi no Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, is said to have descended from heaven to rule over the earth, bringing with him the three imperial regalia: the sword, the mirror and the gem, symbols of the imperial family. He eventually married a local princess, becoming mortal in the process, and established the lineage of Japanese Emperors. Kirishima Shrine was built during the Muromachi Period on a different site from where it stands today. The current shrine was constructed in 1715. It has been designated an important cultural property.
