This is the site of the second Kirishima shrine, which like the first, was burned down by an eruption of the volcano in the background. The shrine moved to it's current (and slightly safer) location roughly 800 years ago.

A sub-temple of Kennin-ji, only open for a few weeks each year in spring and autumn. Beautiful Kirishima tsutsuji (azaleas) to see there but the light was harsh for photos.
