This is Maruoka Park in the next town to the south. It’s like an odd scaled down knock-off Disneyland with Go-Carts, an odd monorail, and these odd giraffes. There were only a handful of people in the park when we were there yesterday, making it seem even more odd.

This small shrine is on a hill behind the Kirishima Hotel. My son and I paid a visit on a morning walk around the garden.

Sunk by USS Washington in the Solomons .....she was blasting at the USS South Dakota whose radar was knocked out early as the Kirishima was scoring hits when suddenly the Washington had closed in and started a rain of shells smothering the Kirishima with hits and near misses.... Her sinking ended the series of battles that basically decided the fate of the Japanese efforts to regain Guadalcanal....
