Cleaning up the seams was mostly a matter of waiting a little bit, and then using a fluffy brush to lightly brush off the cup. It's not super clean yet, but I'll wait one or two days to have the lacquer cure a little before I do a more thorough cleaning.

As you can see, there's a fair bit of powder wasted this way. So it's a good thing I'm not using real gold I suppose.

"Tsugi-Tsugi-Kintsugi" by Masayuki Kishimoto. Part of the Setouchi International Art Festival on Shodoshima island, Japan.

This Yin Yang pair of OOAK art dolls is a concept me and my friend Naomi have been planning for years. They are inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, mending broken pottery with gold. The albino twin will be hers and I will get to keep the dark resin beauty to bind our friendship together forever.

This project has given me strength to get through this horrible year, so full of loss, fear and missed opportunities. Kintsugi reminds me that we are not broken. We can learn and grow from our negative experiences, and become better people for it.

Commissioned OOAK dolls. Not for sale. Both Inamorata 3.0 dolls share the Nsia head sculpt, one in Milk and the other in Coffee resin.

KINTSUGI

The Restorative Art of Naoko Fukumaru

Kintsugi, (pronounced keen-tsue-ghee), uses powderedgold over lacquer-repaired seams to magnify the beauty that emerges from breakage. This 500-year-old method ofmending damaged ceramics evocatively reminds us of theremarkable human capacity to overcome challenges and adversities. Artist and professional ceramics conservator, Naoko Fukumaru, combines state-of-the-art restoration techniques with traditional kintsugi repair methods to create work that highlights imperfections while exploring new possibilities for this noteworthy craft. Here in the Calvin and Mayho Tanabe Gallery, our kintsugi exhibition features Fukumaru's experimental work, which courageously divergesfrom tradition to express the redemptive potential [really?] born from the act of sensitively reconstructing something that has shattered. For Fukumaru, practicing kintsugi is not merely about repairing damaged physical objects, but finding new nways to celebrate the history, artistry, and symbolism of each piece by choosing to cherish rather than trash what has been broken.

Fusing kintsugi-repaired vessels with unconventional materials like thread, textiles, and surprising plaster forms of mushrooms, succulents, crystals, and animals, Fukumaru conveys a journey from vulnerability to strength. Urushi lacquer is at the heart of much of Fukumaru's work. In addition to helping rejoin the broken fragments, urushi can be layered to develop texture and three-dimensional forms.

It can also be used as a paint, which draws from the maki-e lacquer decorating tradition, where surface designs are meticulously painted with urushi then sprinkled with powdered gold or other precious metals to accentuate the designs. However, instead of the typical maki-e motifs of plants and animals, Fukumaru's urushi decorations are reminiscent of neurons, sparking connections between disparate pieces that she has attentively attached to the restored vessels. Delving into what it means to be beautifully broken, Fukumaru expands the horizon of kintsugi as a powerful art form.

The exhibition continues in the Pavilion Gallery

2021 week 10: Kintsugi - the Art of Embracing Damage

The handle didn't feel tight enough, so I gave it some tactical massively powerful elastic, as well as string. It worked reasonably well.

Once all the bits have been pasted and seated, it's pretty much 24 of no-touch time, other than after a few hours pushing the pieces around to get smooth seating.

Lacquer is funny in that you can't really speed up the curing process, so your piece needs to be held in place while it cures. In this case, that means liberal application of "fairly loose" elastic bands. The last thing you want is the elastic to pull your pieces into something warped, so during initial curing you basically want just enough tension to keep things together, rather than "compressed tightly"

At this point the lacquer's cured enough to take better elastic to hold everything together, and more weight on top to force the last lacquer into setting into as tight a bond as possible.

This got sat for 48 hours, giving it the "expected + 1 day" window to cure to a point where I can handle the piece without it feeling like fragments are still a little loose.
