HUMPHREYS GARRISON — Joining millions of people around the world, about 250 members of the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys community, along with 100 students and adults from Pyeongtaek City, participated in Make a Difference Day by helping to clean up Deog Dong San City Park, in Pyeongtaek, Oct. 23.

According to Denise Chappell, the Army Community Service volunteer coordinator and project officer for the event, “Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others; a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.”

The program was created by USA Weekend Magazine 20 years ago and has become an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of October.

This was the third year in a row that the garrison partnered with the local community to participate in the program.

At the park, volunteers from the Bright Society-Goodwill, Cooperation and Service Shinhan High School Chapter, Pyeongtaek City’s Park and Green Belt Management Division and People-to-People International Shinhan High School Chapter, were waiting with gloves and trash bags, ready to get started.

In addition to picking up trash, there was also a need to help build a nicer walking trail, which required some of the volunteers to carry stone and shale, which were leveled out by other helpers. This was used to provide better traction for those who walk the trail on a regular basis.

On Sunday, June 29, 2014, we joined our partners, Clear Channel and I Heart Radio, at the live streaming stage for the 2014 San Francisco Pride Parade along Market Street. The parade was full of color, diversity, and pride.

Karen joined us for one of our group shoots at the University of Alaska at Anchorage in July 2010. I met Karen on Model Mayhem and against her better judgment she joined in the shoot. We did this shoot at a cool looking sculpture which made a great backdrop.

Karen was a blast to shoot with but she is so thin - one of my legs is bigger than her body. Karen has a great sense of humor and actually listened to our directions. Hopefully we'll have the chance to do some more shooting with her!

The morning light catches the curves of the King's Circus, Bath.

The King’s Circus was designed by John Wood and built by his son John Wood the Young after his father died the year he began construction.

The Circus is made up of 30 houses in the Palladian architectural style, divided into three smaller crescents – the first of which stood alone for seven years while funds were sought to complete the construction work, which took place between 1754 and 1767.

Britain’s first circular street, its colonnaded design and shape took obvious inspiration from the Colosseum in Rome, linking the modern Georgian city of Bath with its ancient Roman history.

There was also a link to Bath’s mystical history as he designed it to be the same size as Stonehenge – though his measurements were a little off. The stone acorns which adorn the houses represent the legend of Prince Bladud and how he discovered the hot springs in the city.

A carved frieze runs around the entire circle, while there are three styles of column on the exterior – Doric, Ionic and Corintian.

Among the former residents of the Circus are the artist Thomas Gainsborough and Prime Minister William Pitt.

JALALABAD, 12 November 2015 – Afghan political leaders and civil society representatives joined with United Nations officials in Jalalabad on the occasion of the UN’s 70 anniversary to mark the strong and enduring partnership between Afghanistan and the UN.

Salim Khan Kunduzi, the Governor of Nangarhar Province, and Heran Song, the Head of UNAMA’s regional office in Jalalabad, addressed an audience of around 60 guests.

“In the eastern region there is a harmony and coordination between the departments and UN agencies. We don’t separate ourselves from the UN, we are members of the same family,” said Mr. Kunduzi.

He cited the example of humanitarian assistance given to people affected by the recent earthquake and to displaced families, noting also support for rehabilitation and development in the region.

“We are a member of the UN and here in Nangarhar we are working as one family with strong communication and coordination towards achieving one common goal: A prosperous Afghanistan with acceptable standards of life where children go to school and live in a peaceful environment,” said Mr. Kunduzi.

Ms. Song noted that Afghanistan has been a full, active and vibrant member of the UN since the beginning of the world body and that the UN has been in Afghanistan for over 60 years.

The centerpiece of the reception was the UN70 photography exhibition that spotlights the work and achievements of a group of Afghan professionals who the UN has work with or supported.

During the event, civil society representatives especially highlighted the successful UN support to an active civil society, along with helping to improve the situation of human rights and gender mainstreaming in the eastern region.

The touring UN70 exhibition, which was earlier shown in in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif, brought together a series of specially commissioned panoramic photographs. Each of the giant photos – measuring 4 metres wide – contains three main scenes, highlighting key aspects of the professionals’ work in areas such as improved healthcare, support for returning refugees and environmental protection.

And here is the everyday clutter in my bag. Because I'm still in school, I have school things. Yeah.

Joined by Reps. Debra Heffernan, Deborah Hudson and Mike Barbieri, Sen. Patricia Blevins and Secretary Landgraf, Gov. Jack Markell signed legislation adding e-cigarettes to the state’s public, indoor smoking ban during a ceremony July 7 at Tutto Fresco Restaurant in North Wilmington. Delaware will become the fifth state to ban e-cigarettes from public places, including restaurants and bars, when the measure becomes effective in 90 days.

The bill’s primary sponsor, Rep. Heffernan, said she got the idea one night when her daughter, Charlotte, asked her why someone was smoking inside a restaurant. The smoker was using an e-cigarette. “That’s why I think every restaurant owner … [is] really happy to be able to do this, so that their customers and employees breathe clean air,” Rep. Heffernan said.

Gov. Markell said the bill, which enjoyed bipartisan support, is necessary to protect the public health, including that of a growing number of Delaware teens who are trying e-cigarettes. The number of young people using e-cigarettes has tripled since 2011, jumping to 14.3% in 2014. Young e-cigarette users also are far more likely to continue smoking cigarettes than non-e-cigarette users are. The Governor added that one in five youth using e-cigarettes was not previously a tobacco user.

Secretary Landgraf thanked Rep. Heffernan for her passion and dedication in getting House Bill 5 passed. “This, indeed, is another step that will enable us to keep Delawareans healthy,” Secretary Landgraf said.

Adding e-cigarettes to Delaware’s Clean Indoor Air Act protects the public from toxic emissions and sends message that nicotine in any form is not safe, said Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay, who could not be at the bill signing, but testified numerous times in support of the legislation. Nicotine from e-cigarettes can remain on indoor surfaces for weeks to months.
