Last Saturday, two of my photography buddies joined me for a drive through the night marathon that would take us to Glacier Point, up over the Tioga Pass to Tenaya Lake, over to Mono Lake for the sunrise, and then down 395 back to Orange County. Ryan Pastorino joined me at Gregg Cooper's house and we set off with a cooler full of drinks and sandwiches on our Yosemite banzai photography adventure.
Our spirits were high as we had partly cloudy skies in the forecast, and the webcams in the park showed perfect conditions for a nice sunset followed by a night of shooting the Milky Way at Glacier and then down in the valley below. What could possibly go wrong?
But as we drove into Oakhurst, we noticed a small cloud of smoke above the peaks in the distance…and it wasn't getting smaller. As we drove closer, a monstrous cloud of smoke loomed over the entrance to the valley, giving the forest around us an eery orange glow. We stopped to grab a few shots of the inferno which, as we came to find out, had erupted just above El Portal, possibly from a backyard barbecue. As we arrived up at Glacier, we found not one, but TWO fires were now burning above Yosemite Valley, and much of the valley was now covered in hazy smoke. So the Milky Way was now out of the question from Glacier Point.
Plan B was to drive over the Tioga Pass earlier than we had planned to see if the sky was any better above Tenaya Lake. The only problem was that the Forest Service had now closed highway 120 coming up from Yosemite Valley, which meant that if we wanted to get across to Mono Lake, we would have to drive all they way back through Mariposa, down 49 to Coulterville, and then take 120 again all the way back up and over. The delay would cost us another 3 hours of shooting. We all looked at each other….and then decided to go for it.
Three hours later, we were driving through thick smoke on highway 120, wondering if we would ever get far enough from the fires to get a clear shot of the Milky Way. We arrived at Tenaya Lake at 2:30 AM and stared up at the sky and found that the smoke was now behind us. I froze my butt off as the temperature had dropped to 46 degrees and I was wearing shorts, but for 40 minutes, all you could hear was the should of three shutters clicking and an owl echoing across the lake.
The shot that you see above is from a single frame taken with the Nikkor 14-24 2.8, ISO 3200, at 30 seconds. The glow on the clouds in the distance is from the fires that were burning in the distance. By the time we headed home in the morning, we heard that the El Portal Fire had grown to 2000 acres. Im hoping that with the expected rain showers over the next couple of days that they will be able to knock the fires down and keep them from spreading. Yosemite is easily one of my favorite spots in the world, and it kills me to see any part of it burning. When we left, both fires were headed away from the valley, so we had that to be thankful for.
We finally made it to Mono Lake at 4 AM, but you'll have to wait to hear the rest of our adventure in my next post.

A brand new image for you all and one of my favourite subjects to shoot. Iceland has some absolutely gorgeous wooden churches in the most picturesque places and this one at Buðir is one of the most iconic in Iceland (along with Myrdal Church at Vik).
Set on a lava field in Staðarsveit, the volcano of Snæfellsjökull makes a wonderful backdrop (seen in other photos of mine but behind me in this one).
The Buðir black church is one of 3 black churches in Iceland and they are black because the exterior wood is painted with pitch, the same material you see on boat hulls. The reason for this is to protect it from the harsh Icelandic winters. This is a method that has worked well for over 100 years as the date stamp of the church on the cross above the door reads '1847'.

WOW, WOW, WOW, what a place this is. I arrived here with a friend of mine Ed a couple of hours before sunset and a short fifteen minute walk from the car park had us standing on the shoreline of this utterly remarkable iceberg mountain lake.
Oh my word, this is where New Zealand seriously impresses you. As the sun slowly sunk down the mountains behind us and the last throws of light that lit up the peaks of these incredible mountains finally disappeared to be replaced by a billion stars that shone like precious and priceless diamonds, all that remains is you standing there feeling a little emotional and so thankful to be alive witnessing this quite incredible view.
New Zealand for those of you who have yet to visit and experience the breathtaking views for yourself, is quite rightly at the top of the list of countries to visit with a camera. I have had the very good fortune to have visited the country three times now and I honestly cannot wait to return at the start of May 2019 to run a ten day workshop.
All I will say is that if you have ever had a strong desire to fly to the other side of the world and be transported to fairy tale locations, go and DO IT!!! Either with me on a workshop or by yourself. The most important thing is that you experience it. Wait no longer, book the flight and be amazed by what you will see and experience.

Taken back in October 2018, this viewpoint between Reine and Sakrisroy is absolutely stunning, as is all of Lofoten to be fair but there was a panoramic feel to this scene as I drove by. So I pulled over and I, along with my six workshop clients spent some time by the water's edge capturing this wonderful scene on camera. This image consists of six vertical images stitched together in Photoshop CC.

A brand new edit of an image I captured October last year during my autumn workshop in Iceland.
Arnarstapi is a small coastal village with a fishing harbour and these wonderful rocky sea stacks set against the stunning Mt Stapafell. This white house is beautifully positioned to be included in photographs. It's like the builder/owner knew exactly where to put it to please me, ha, ha.
I am really looking forward to heading back in October for what is my favourite time of the year, autumn with the changing of the colours. I was genuinely blown away by the scenery in October last year and for me, I prefer it to the full blown winter landscape.

The Land of Fire and Ice, Sunrise Over Vestrahorn, Iceland
One of the most pleasurable aspects of being a full time professional landscape photographer who runs workshops in various parts of the world is that I am in the incredibly fortunate position to be in some of the world's most spectacular scenery at the best times of the year and every now and then you come across a view that stops you in your tracks and leaves you almost speechless (I say almost because it is me that I am talking about ;-) )
But what a morning this was back in October 2017 during one of the most beautiful subtle starts to a day I can ever remember. This unusual view of the mighty Vestrahorn was taken from the grounds of our hotel near Jökulsárlón.
I set up the camera along with my clients on either side of me and we all captured this stunning view. The sky initially had a gorgeous hints of pink in it whilst the ocean by contrast was a beautiful shade of blue but the colour suddenly grew and grew until it exploded in colour.
But when you have a view like this, you cannot complain at all when standing there all quiet and respectful and you breathe in the salty air and feel the breeze gently brushing past your face, it certainly has you feel alive and grateful to experience such moments. I hope you all like it.

Lori has always been one of my favorite landscape artists in world. She adds a touch of magic to every image she creates with her unique use of lighting, color and reflections. Even the simplest of images have an ethereal and mystical feel! We will be showing a special selection of Lori's pictures ranging from portraits to landscapes, with the focus on the latter. Lori started creating more portraits within the past couple years and this work has really shined, showing her broad range of talent.
