We started a new book discussion group in December 2007, focusing on literary fiction. At our first meeting we discussed Kiran Desai's award-winning novel, The Inheritance of Loss.
Published to extraordinary acclaim, The Inheritance of Loss heralds Kiran Desai as an insightful novelist. She illuminates the pain of exile and the ambiguities of postcolonialism with a tapestry of colorful characters: an embittered old judge; Sai, his sixteen-year-old orphaned granddaughter; a chatty cook; and the cook’s son, Biju, who is hopscotching from one miserable New York restaurant to another, trying to stay a step ahead of the INS. When a Nepalese insurgency in the mountains threatens Sai’s new-sprung romance with her handsome tutor, their lives descend into chaos. The cook witnesses India’s hierarchy being overturned and discarded. The judge revisits his past and his role in Sai and Biju’s intertwining lives. A story of depth and emotion, hilarity and imagination, The Inheritance of Loss tells a story of love, family, and loss.

Joined by Lieutenant Governor Matt Denn, Secretary Jennifer Ranji of the Department of Services for Children, Youth and their Families (DSCYF), and State Senator Robert Marshall, the Governor visited the Spencer Family Life Foundation Freedom School, which follows the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School model of aiming to provide literacy-rich summer programs in communities where literacy levels are low. The Governor toured the classrooms and read aloud a story to the 80 scholars of the school.

Finally the old Canon is joining this bunch. It has been hit or miss working properly for way too long - causing me to miss a lot of photo opportunities.
This was a nationwide protest which was sponsored by Join the Impact and held on Saturday, November 15th, 2008. The nationwide protest was formed to combat propositions 2 (Florida), 8 (California), 102 (Arizona) and the anti-gay adoption bill in Arkansas.
This particular protest was held at Phoenix City Hall for most of the morning and then we all marched to the Arizona State Capital.
Gay marriage is a civil rights issue, not a religion issue. Proposition 8 took away an existing rights from the GLBT community in California. It is totally wrong and unconstitutional to take away existing rights from a group of people.
Proposition 102 was put on the ballot in Arizona by the unethical actions of the republicans in the state senate. It is totally disgusting on what the republicans did. They forever tarnished the image of the Arizona State Senate.

You can clearly hear couple of the senators saying "Point to Order, Point to Order" in the video. You can see that some of the senators break their own rules in order to put 102 on the ballot. That right there is very unethical.

The Great Refractor building at the Hamburg-Bergedorf Observatory might show a large, dome-shaped structure, housing one of the most significant telescopes in the world. The dome, which can rotate to allow the telescope inside to align with various parts of the sky, is a prominent feature of the building. The telescope itself, known as the Great Refractor, has a long history and is a marvel of scientific engineering. The building is located in a serene environment, possibly surrounded by trees or other natural elements, adding to its charm. The structure’s historical and scientific significance, combined with its architectural beauty.
