My Uncle Jim, killed in action 28 August 1918, Hardecourt, Somme, France, aged 18. This portrait was painted by my father in about 1920 using a photo of himself and his brother, taken in Chatham, as a reference; the photo still has smudges of paint on it. He is wearing the cap badge of the Middlesex Regt but was transferred to the Royal Fusiliers when he was sent to France in the summer of 1918. My father has included the war and victory medal ribbons which were awarded posthumously. The frame was made by my grandfather.

Earthworm Jim!

Through soil he did crawl!

Earthworm Jim!

A supersuit did fall!

Jim was just a dirt-eating, chewy link of worm flesh,

but all that came to a crashing end, ha ha ha! Ahhh!

Earthworm Jim!

He's such a groovy guy,

Earthworm Jim!

He rockets through the sky!

Cruisin' through the universe, having lots of fun,

here comes Earthworm Jim you know that he's the mighty one!

Look out!

Despite his great big muscles and his really big ray-gun,

Jim is just an earthworm but then he's the only one

with a supersuit to make him really super-strong!

Jim can be a winner if we only sing along!

Alright!

Earthworm Jim!

We think he's mighty fine!

Earthworm Jim!

A hero for all time!

Earthworm, Earthworm, Earthworm, Earthworm Jim!

Hooray for Jiiiiiiiim!!

It was so hot, my phone stopped working. So hot I seriously regretted never getting into the idea of wearing shorts.

But not so hot I couldn't kibbitz with one of my favorite Flickr photographers, Jim Lucio, who'd been gracious enough to put him up at his place for a few days, while I interviewed couples in Baltimore for my book on couples.

I've come to the realization that unlike many 100 strangers project photographers, I can't go out with my goal being to seek subjects. Must not be my style. Strangers just kind of show up while I have my camera and I get a picture. It will probably take me a long time to finish this project....

That said... I was in the small park by my house and saw Jim hanging out on a bench talking with a friend. I started chatting with them and discovered that Jim is a volunteer at the Teton Raptor Center. The TRC takes in injured hawks, falcons, eagles etc. and nurses them back to health to hopefully release them back to their native habitat. Those that can't return to the wild find homes at the TRC, are well taken care of and become models for educational programs with schools and the public.

I learned a little about Jim but more about the Raptor Center. You can learn more about the Raptor Center at www.tetonraptorcenter.org

I've been to three of Jim Gaffigan's live comedy shows, but today was my first time drawing him.

This photo was inspired by a great flickr photographer named SkyShaper.

I recently learned of him, and find his work amazing. Please check him out.

I met Jim today on the street while shooting in Trenton around the old Roebling factories.

Jim Fowler at Boggs Rock, Pickens County, South Carolina. Hard to believe it's been almost four years ago already since this shot was taken! Where does the time go?

Occasionally, an encounter with a stranger will be minimal in terms of length and detail, yet will go beyond a simple snap and will say something about our human family. As such, I feel it deserves inclusion in our project.

I was riding home on my bicycle when I passed him sitting on a bench. His straw hat and carefully-dressed appearance caught my attention and piqued my interest. I continued on to the corner but it was still on my mind. I decided I would not give in to the “hesitation blues” which always leave me wondering what the outcome would have been had I stopped to meet a stranger. Approaching him from the opposite direction, I saw he was now walking slowly toward me and was I was surprised when he sat down on the next bench. He was clearly pushing himself to make slow progress, the second slow-moving gentleman I had met on my ride home today.

I walked up to him and introduced myself. I said I had noticed him on my way by and thought he would make an excellent subject for my amateur photo project, the Human Family. He was hesitant and I asked if he would mind my taking a moment for me to make the photo. He asked if I was going to use it for purposes other than my project. I said no and explained the project in brief terms. “Then go ahead” he said. “Take your photo but then I must keep moving.” Meet Jim.

I leaned my bike against a tree and crouched down, positioning myself to have the sidewalk form the background rather than the parked cars and traffic behind him. Neither was a great setting but the light worked. He was wearing large, dark sunglasses and I asked if it would hurt his eyes to remove them briefly which would make a much better photo. He did so.

Photos taken, I complimented him on his straw hat which I thought showed a sense of style. He seemed unwilling to be labelled stylish and simply said “It does the job. It protects me from the sun.” I commented on his accent and asked where he was from. He said “The U.K.” and with that he pushed himself upward and said “And now I really have to keep moving to get where I’m going.” I shook his hand and made one last effort to engage him by asking his age with the thought that it might form a bit of connection based on our mutual ages. “I prefer not to disclose that” was his somewhat clipped response as he resumed his slow walk down the sidewalk. I thanked him. He gave a slight smile and said “I hope your photography project goes well.”

My favorite encounters are with strangers who love the idea of the project and are eager to participate by sharing something of themselves while also expressing curiosity about me and the project. A subject like Jim, however, is a different response. Meeting him left me surprised that he agreed to participate. That he did participate demonstrated the kindness of a stranger who wanted to help someone he didn’t know, even though it clearly involved him some personal discomfort. Thanks Jim, I really appreciated it.
