I was at a friends house talking to his daughter about her college course. We talked about school and how much better college was. We then talked about how horrible school uniforms were. She told me that when she finished school, she wanted to burn her books and uniform but her dad wouldn't let her, so she threw the lot over the back fence into the grounds of an old derelict mill.
Of course I had to have a look and nearly 2 years later it was still there!
What was even better was that I found a tightly tied up bin bag full of coats. The 3 coats I kept were her mother's long purple down coat and Zara parka and the daughter's Firetrap jacket. I remember seeing them wear the coats on many occasion. Then that one day (about half a year ago) when the coats were no longer hanging up in the hallway. I remember commenting at the time how tidier the hallway looked and being gutted when she said they had tidied up and threw a load of coats away. Luckily she had used a good quality bin bag and tied it up well, the coats didn't even need washing.

I got this from a Salvos store a few years back for about $30 I think. Lovely soft leather. I haven't worn it yet though. Maybe this winter?
I've had this life jacket for a few years now and have never gone for a swim with it on, I changed that this weekend. I drove far out into the woods to a lake with no cottages (way out in the sticks) and then walked along it's edge through some pretty rocky woods until I found a spot I felt that nobody would see me, even though I just drove 35 minutes into the middle of no where.
I found a spot that I liked, threw on a pair of shorts and spun in a new cartridge. At this point my stomach is in my throat as I tighten the strap. I gave it one last check, the cartridge is tight, the pull cord isn't tangled, and my buckle is secure. I make my way into the water step by step until I'm waist deep. I lower down into the water and push myself off. I notice my life jacket is riding up a little bit, there's still some air left in it from my last inflation. Now I am out to where my feet can't touch and my chin starts going under water, that is when I slide my hand down my life jacket to find my toggle.
I feel the small piece of plastic between my fingers; I snug the life jacket down one more time, Then I pull, the whoosh of c02 tightens the chamber up around my neck and slaps me in the face all in under a second. The vest inflated perfect, it was really tight because of the extra air that was already in the chamber. The chamber now pressed firmly against my face felt cold but soon warmed up. The sensation of the strap digging into my back and the feeling of floating was somehow comforting. I floated around for a short while bobbing up and down. After a while I let some air out and blew it up orally a few more times.
Best money I spent this whole weekend. Does anyone else get nervous or paranoid when they go swimming?

Retrieved from the skip with the long Diesel parka, another fantastic find. It's an early 90's down jacket in fair condition.
Had this jacket for more than 13 years and it has been a great travel companion. It was designed to be a cycling rain jacket and I love that it can be folded up into a waist pouch.
Had been reluctant to retire it for the longest of time even though it's no longer water resistant and the colour has faded on some section. I guess 13 years is a good run.

Once again, this photo was taken a year or two ago, but I was inspired to rummage through my archives and post it by Todd Klassy's photo Intersecting Lines.
