“I keep stars in my pockets wear daisies in my hair but I tuck you tenderly in the folds of my heart and take you everywhere.” ― Melody Lee, Vine: Book of Poetry
"Winter food of the birds that remain within our borders probably consists largely of insect eggs and pupae, the known prey of the chickadees and kinglets with which the gnatcatcher associates at that season.
Food-table offerings seem seldom to attract this species; in fact, I am able to find but a single instance of it, and that in winter. Mrs. Andrew L. Whigham, who maintains an all-year feeding station in her garden in extreme western Florida, writes: "In January and February, 1933, for six or eight weeks, two of these birds used our feed shelves. They ate the inevitable cornbread [a saltless recipe of Mrs. Whigham's, baked in quantity for the birds and proven to be as attractive to most species as cracked sunflower seeds] and the commercial mockingbird food mixed with grated carrot.""

"The Blue-gray Gnatcatcher is the northernmost-occurring species of gnatcatcher, and the only truly migratory one. Most members of its genus are resident in Central and South America." allaboutboids
I hope everyone is safe on this Friday the 13th/Harvest Moon.
"As we sat, a tiny flash of blue-gray and white sped away. A moment later, the bird returned, and went back to foraging up and down the outer branches of the vines in search of food.
The bird was white underneath and almost exclusively blue-gray up top. The wings looked a bit darker, as if some black or brown ink had been splashed in. A white eye-ring stood out against a backdrop of gray head and a slender, jet black bill.
The most remarkable thing, though, was the bird's diminutive size. Wings spread wide were just a bit more than 4 inches. My field guide says that I would need to hold five of them in my hands just to get one ounce."

"Friendship is something whose depth fits human aspirations and fulfills human possibilities. It has heft to it, as a gold-piece does and a gambling chip does not."

".................... looks more like a dinosaur than some dinosaurs did in the Jurassic, it's not the only one around. Dinosaurs flock to our bird feeders. People eat them for Thanksgiving. Dinosaurs crap on our statues in public parks, sing from cages in people's homes, perch on telephone wires, and crow at dawn on farms. Most paleontologists today agree that the dinosaurs did not go extinct, as we were taught in grade school. Instead, they became the most diverse group of land vertebrates on the earth- the world's ten thousand species of birds."

Not rare. Not native. Newly countable and extremely cute.
"The bird has nothing to do with nutmeg, nor is it found where nutmeg comes from. [Maybe it is nutmeg-colored. But that's not a real color. It's a made-up color. The only real colors are those original 8 in the Crayola box. As a kid, my family evidently couldn't afford the 64-color box for me, or the unbelievable 128-color box, so now I refuse to recognize any other colors. This bird is brown (or close enough).]"

I love my marbles. Even when I loose them ;) I got a Wacom board for Christmas and I am experimenting with new filters and effects.

Hello Friends!
It's been 4 months since I've set eyes, or images on flickr. Long story...but the short version is I've had no time.
Since moving from FL to MD life has changed in many ways. I've far less time to flickr OR shoot...have been out only 3 or 4 times in the 4 months I've been MIA.
To those of you who have sent me emails and dropped comments over the time I've been gone...I'm sorry I've not responded. Thank you for the many kind words and inquiries.
I hope to catch up with all of you very soon!

This is a Chipping Sparrow; I read there are 28 different kinds of sparrows in Minnesota. This is the best one.

Just saw a fun opportunity as I walked upstairs...the banister shadow was a perfect slope and the finger monster and tiny lady were close at hand. :)
"This acrobatic species is most often encountered as a small- to medium-size flock moves through woodland. Its presence is usually announced by the almost constant calling between members of the groups as they move from tree to tree. " natgeo. Photo taken the same day I stepped on the lady tourist and nearly broke my neck trying to regain my balance. Poor phone reception here... not a good place to break a hip. Just sayin.
OK, so I took this shot of a Widow Skimmer who refused to sit still so this is not as clear as I'd like. However it is the only shot I was able to get.
Lo and behold, and without knowing it, I managed to get another sneaky little tiny itty bitty damselfly in this shot, too!
I uploaded the photo to see if the Widow Skimmer was "doable" or not, and just as I decided not I spotted little "Waldo" hiding in plan sight.
Can you see it?
One of the last of the Bluets, perched as usual ever so perfectly on one of the last days when the brook was bubbling in the sun past the swamp's lagoon.
While parts of Europe and Africa still have a dragon season, we are done. At the same time, at least our season lasted a month longer than parts of Canada. It's time to concentrate on bird migrations. Took out the scarf and gloves today. Wore jeans for the first time since Mar. 15. I seriously doubt if Hallmark could have made money on seasonal greeting cards drawn in California.
For those of you I missed, a belated Happy Thanksgiving. We went to see the kids, dogs, and two grandkids in Sacramento. It was the first day in two years I missed commenting on Flickr. I almost feel guilty.
Noticed the other day the Ruby crowned Kinglets are back! And ever since I've been doing more birdwatching trying to get a shot, any shot, of one.
Therein lie the problems - they are tiny, they are fast, and they scoot from feeder to feeder. So, whichever feeder I point my camera at they naturally go to a different feeder!
To make matters worse it's been chilly and windy, so I'm having to take photos through the windows. Temps will be going up a little in the next week, so hopefully I can open a window, and have the camera pointed at the right feeder, and actually get a glimpse of that ruby crown. Until then, here's one checking out the seed-log feeder.
