Picked yesterday morning in Lakeside, California.

Other plants and flowers that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my strobe lit plant set. In the description, I list resources that I've used to learn how to light with off camera flash. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157628079460544/...

Bearded Iris from the Brentwood Iris Garden. I am not sure what this breed of iris is... it was in the "u-pick" section and did not have a placard. This weekend was the Brentwood Iris Festival. I had the chance to pick my own and the flowers are blooming nicely. I'll post a photo in the next few days of how they're doing. Below, you can see the bouquet I picked.

The iris is named after the Greek goddess of the rainbow. Of all the flowers, the iris has the widest variety of colors. All colors of the rainbow can be found except a true red. The quest for a truly red iris has been going on for over 100 years. No one has yet claimed the prize.

The Brentwood Iris Garden is a small family business. It is owned and operated by three generations of the Dittmore family. Please visit their website at:

A large bloom iris that was originally a gift from my mother-in-law when we lived in NJ and we brought it along with us to Maine. It rained hard during the night and I took this in the morning.

Iris is a genus of 260–300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, which is also the name for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris. Some authors state that the name refers to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. As well as being the scientific name, iris is also very widely used as a common name for all Iris species, as well as some belonging to other closely related genera. A common name for some species is 'flags', while the plants of the subgenus Scorpiris are widely known as 'junos', particularly in horticulture. It is a popular garden flower. [Wikipedia]

I am sorry old Iris you have got to go, this garden has a future for your offspring but not for you!

Does this remind anyone of the fuss about the current scandal in Europe, this most troublesome continent?

The iris' have finally begun to open.
