An Iris flower right after it rained. Denman Island, BC, Canada. May, 2016.

The iris's mythology dates back to Ancient Greece, when the goddess Iris, who personified the rainbow (the Greek word for iris), acted as the link between heaven and earth. It's said that purple irises were planted over the graves of women to summon the goddess Iris to guide them in their journey to heaven. Irises became linked to the French monarchy during the Middle Ages, eventually being recognized as their national symbol, the fleur-de-lis.

Toujours un plaisir pour moi de photographier des iris.

Always a pleasure for me to photograph some iris !

Iris morphology is the product of evolution acting to attract and compete for pollinators- a landing pad, guides to help find nectar and pollen, and even shelter from inclement weather. The function of fthe beard is uncertain though. The showiest outer parts are bracts, modified leaves, which surround the petals.

The irises are peaking just in time for a major winter storm sweeping through Colorado- 8 inches (20 cm) for the plains, 24 inches (60 cm) for the mountains.

A very rewarding winter flowering species.

Iris is a genus of 260–300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. As well as being the scientific name, iris is also very widely used as a common name for all Iris species, though some plants called thus belong to other closely related genera. A common name for some species is 'flags', while the plants of the subgenus Scorpiris are widely known as 'junos', particularly in horticulture. It is a popular garden flower.

The new CS5 now ships with HDR Pro. It is brilliant where as before it was not even worth looking at. Photomatix beware! This is a 7 shot HDR created with CS5.
