Spotted this sweet bluebonnet scene while on my way home on Monday evening.

Brite Lite Barber Shop in Harlem is a favorite of ours because we not only love its #handpainted #signage but also love its #vintage poles outside. The #barber pole's colors are from a time when people went to barbers not only for just a #haircut or #shave but also for bloodletting and other medical procedures. The look of the pole is linked to bloodletting with the color red representing blood and white representing the bandages used to stem the bleeding. The pole itself was used to symbolize the stick that a patient squeezed to make the veins on his arm stand out more prominently for the bloodletting. In the USA the poles are red, white and blue while in Europe they are traditionally red and white. We also love the kid sitting on the bench outside waiting for his father to get his haircut. Azucar Ice Cream Company in Little Havava, Miami specializes in artisanal #icecream and #sorbet in #Cuban and tropical flavors. It was founded in 2011 and is known for its #Abuela Maria flavor that has Maria #cookies and ruby red guava and cream cheese in a vanilla ice cream and our favorite Cafe con Leche ice cream (Cuban #coffee with #Oreo). We fell in love with their #storefront with the huge cone holding 5 scoops and a cherry on top and their #neon #sign. Today in NYC, it sure feels like we are in Miami with the high heat and humidity. Things that make you go Hmmmm. While the billboard is supposed to make you laugh regardless of your position on the matter, the non-sequitur image of immiscible activities, albeit one being recreational, the other occupational, is a visual metaphor of "oil and water don't mix." BTW, no matter the quality, it's probably your face as the Trainmaster says "YOU'RE FIRED!" when you turn up dirty. No laughing matter.

Engineer Brett Engert of the Eastern Washington Railroad brings in the goods – 150,000 bushels of golden grain in 45 CH’s – at Telford Road (about midway between Cheney and Coulee City) with NIWX 9129 hoofing it out front with two stablemates teaming up as seen from a nearby cattle chute. The year’s copious harvest has the line’s elevators filled to overflowing – literally – necessitating round the clock “CW” train operations. It’s all hands on deck, for no sooner will this “Scoot Train” disgorge its whole crop and soft white wheat at Highline Grain-Four Lakes, and it’ll be running back west positing empties from Hite to Coulee City: this scene repeating itself many more times before Big Bend trackside elevators are ready to receive next year’s blond bounty. Pearl Diner in lower Manhattan has been in business since the 1950s. This gorgeous overhanging ‪#‎neonsign‬ is original and still manages to look great even when all of the ‪#‎letters‬ are not lit. The menu is typical ‪#‎diner‬ fare, including ‪#‎burgers‬, ‪#‎milkshake‬ and ‪#‎pancakes‬ but they also serve ‪#‎Greek‬ specialties as the owner is Greek. The diner is highly unusual in that it is located in its own single story building amidst the huge ‪#‎skyscrapers‬ of the financial district. We love their ‪#‎food‬ and their 50s style booths. We are also happy that they reopened as their business sustained a great deal of damage from flooding due to Superstorm Sandy a few years back. ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎neongeeks‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎americana‬ ‪#‎trb_ipoft_signs‬ ‪#‎gas_food_lodging‬ ‪#‎ipulledoverforthis‬ ‪#‎insta_america_americana‬

A BNSF double stack on double track wests urgent as bands of disgruntled clouds on the move east drift, slowly, shifting, rising with the lay of arable immixed scabbed channel land along Coal Coulee in which Coal Creek water colors the otherwise semi-arid braun vastness of the “Evergreen” State’s breadbasket. Parting the wind ES44AC 5802 and sun-faded MAC 9980 split Downs Road: the gates do their thing though no one waits for the train’s passing. ¶ In a nickel of posts, near Lamona, where Coal’s all but parched esophagus constricts it’ll be back to single main and more tracking – loosely – and jumping – here and there – the purling Coal, and later the longest ephemeral stream in North America, Crab Creek as man’s steel and nature’s water argue over the path of least resistance on their way to the ever bending, eternally building Columbia. The Crab at Beverly of Milwaukee Road fame; the Great Northern betwixt Rock Island and so named for its Colorado namesake’s characteristics Trinidad. ¶ In as long as it takes the two-high wells to follow each other through the frame all will fall silent, again: gates return to ready, red lights and bell quit, Doppler fading westward 2+1 motors and then…nothing. Carbone is an Italian-American restaurant on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, which opened in 2013. Chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi took over the space where Rocco Ristorante operated for close to 90 years. The third-generation owner Anthony DaSilva told us when we interviewed him for our book "New York Nights", that he"lost the space because his landlord raised his rent from $8,000 a month to $18,000 a month." Sure. The lid was ominously threatening a damp closing to the day, but I couldn’t resist exercising the opportunity to catalog such a ménage à trois en couleur. I’ve been telling myself to make sure to get those haggard warbonnets on pixels before they’re retired; purged en masse. Even better: to catch one with a noodle-logoed deviant and a homeboy leading the charge, dynos a-screamin’ holding back some 120-odd tubs of Powder River Basin sub-bituminous jumping historic US Highway 10 which technically runs right in front of my residence where I’d been chillin’ with Deborah. “I think I’m gonna go chase that train. I’ve been meanin’ to add some Fe bonnets for my collection.” “Not without me!” Loaded up, scanner and “fish finder” (Remote ATCS) activated tells the Lakeside has no immediate eastbound traffic, and the “fish” I intend to catch is lined through Fishtrap and far beyond. We, westbound. I, scoping the usual spots ultimately deciding on the corner of Jack Brown Road and ol’ US 10. Set up in time to spare, Deborah strolls down Jack’s dusty road to take in the profusion of wildflowers and fowl and foliage swaying and singing and swishing in the brisk everlasting wind. Not long, but long enough for Deborah to disappear around the far bend, the threesome cut my finder and voilà. Down Brown’s lane and there she is. Joe's Tavern In Chelsea has not been open in over 20 years but we love that this #vintage #neonsign has survived. It is surprising because this part of western Chelsea near the High Line has become very gentrified and many old buildings like this one have met the wrecking ball to become expensive glass condos. Hastings having transitioned the three D’s to digging-in dynamics – that lonely reedy-whine tells – upon cresting at Hanson two poles past, now just west of Almira occupying Starkel’s dust-parched dirt road in a near 1.3% slope sloping down to 1.5%. 8,000 tons bunched: fifty-five filled steel railed wagons plus two TILX tanks black bringing up the rear empty, flashing Fred hanging, pushing. ¶ This annum’s infernos west belch rising smog high up, blotting out – in seconds – a blood-red black hole sun sinking. ¶ Foreground, stubbled. Thickened whisker-waves of amber shaven combine-close attests harvest is in highest gear, confirmed by that permeating, so distinctive powdery, wheat-sweet harvest-time odor commingling this pungent scent of scorched earth, with exhausted, burnt diesel-heated fumes whirling grit altogether swirl, assailing olfactories and searing every eye including Heaven’s all-seeing eye. Celestial leavings of light pastel a watercolored eve’ as the Eastern Washington Gateway crew with 328 out front is takin’ ‘em out – again. Into last light. Onward towards Hite and west while most others have turned off their screen and the lights at the office: gone home. Left the grind behind. For tomorrow. Now in their sweetheart's and li’l’uns arms. Or not. Surely they’ve supped and melted into the lazy-chair staring shut-eyed – into another screen. This evening’s EWG crew will be busy bringing their train through the pitch of night right into nach mitternacht where a wind storm awaits them, blowing at empty grade crossings, waking the light sleeper as they bang out their switchlist here and there before tying their La Grange workhorse down to head home themselves while most others have begun to stir for another staring shut-eyed cubicle day… (© 27Apr18)

The 1930s ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎diner‬ was known for its ‪#‎burgers‬, ‪#‎fries‬ and#milkshakes and was owned by Sunny Sharma. The TV show "Friends" used Moondance as the diner where the character Monica, played by Courtney Cox worked. Moondance Diner was also used by the film "Spider-Man" as the place where Mary Jane Watson played by Kirsten Dunst was employed. Luckily the diner was saved from demolition and purchased for $7,500 by Vince and Cheryl Pierce, who moved the structure by flat-bed truck to LaBarge, Wyoming at a cost of $40,000. After some much needed repairs, they reopened the diner in Wyoming in 2008 where it remained in operation until 2012. We especially loved the diner's rotating moon ‪#‎sign‬ and the sparkling ‪#‎letters‬ spelling "Moondance" in an interesting ‪#‎font‬. We haven't heard any news on the fate of this diner since its closure a few years ago but hope that it will again be saved. ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎disappearingfaceofnewyork‬ ‪#‎food‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎ipulledoverforthis‬ ‪#‎gas_food_lodging‬ ‪#‎trb_ipoft_signs‬ ‪#‎trb_rural‬ ‪#‎typography‬ ‪#‎type‬

Just outside Payson in northeast Arizona, travelers encounter this sign for Pete's Place Cabaret, a topless establishment with a stockyard theme. Yeah, that's right -- the entrances to the parking lot feature cattle grates, too. Depending on who you believe, the property used to be a stockyard, a butcher shop or a steakhouse restaurant. Unfortunately -- or fortunately, as the case may be -- Pete's was closed the day I drove by. But check out the reviews on Yelp for some entertaining reading.

With severe thunderstorms and lightning moving in, what better place to be than standing on an aluminum boat dock or riding a Seadoo jetski!
