One can only wonder if this once celebrated “Centennial” – DDA40X 6925 – will ever be restored, or simply saved from her agonizing demise of slowly-but-surely oxidizing into the central South Dakota color-rust earth. Aside from serving as an eight-thousand gallon fuel bunker, having been plundered of her dynamic braking apparatus, and otherwise donor of homogeneous EMD parts, the near 100-foot-long, head-hanging sixty-six-hundred horse dreadnaught, shamefully moored along the shores of the mighty Mo nowhere near the open seas of amber waves of wheat and sand she once plied, still appears ripe for resurrection. Before Europeans settled here, the Kiewa Valley was an annual meeting place for six Aboriginal tribes where they gathered to perform rituals and sort out their grievances. They also enjoyed a good feed of Bogong moths that prefer to breed here in the summer months, it's cool this morning at 6°C (42°F).

Kiewa means sweet water.

If there ever were a case of atherosclerosis in BNSF’s vast cardiovascular rail system, the famed infamous “Funnel,” so famously coined by my friend Bruce Kelly so many Kodachrome boxes past, may well be the epitome thereof. The amount of non-stop (figuratively speaking), bidirectional-traffic pumped through this constricted chemin de fer construct at its most acute less than three-mile-short, 21-foot tie-end to concrete tie-end narrows – between Napa & Lee Street Junction and Sunset Junction – is a feat worthy of a standalone Discovery series, if not a Modern Marvels feature, or a modern-day History Channel “Hell on Wheels.” Here, just East of the geographic center of Spokane, the epicenter of The Funnel, it’s 21:35 of any given night or day, and Main Two has very little exposed rail as one eastbound after the other in “Train Ahead” formation follows on the DPU’s dim of the previous in a more stop than go precession. Meanwhile Main One is the antithesis as Boyer West shoots WB-after-WB out of Hauser 23 east-miles as rapidly as safe, making room for the in-frame and following eastbounds. In what may seem as arbitrary minutes, this grain empty will ease ahead keeping measured distance as the train behind it inches its way forward and so on an so forth ad infinitum. (© 24Jul18)

@denoswonderwheelpark The ‪#‎wonderwheel‬ was erected in 1920 and stands 150 feet high and holds 144 people at once. Its unusual design for a ‪#‎ferriswheel‬ incorporates sections of curved tracks connecting an outer wheel and a smaller inner wheel, with 16 swinging cars which roll back and forth between the two wheels. There are also 8 stationary cars. All of the cars give riders panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Can you feel it? In his intensity? Can you see it? In his face? At once exuding myopic focus, acute awareness, and singular concentration on the task at hand, in hand. And what about his, by today’s standards, ancient artesian pedigree de La Grange? A mere extension of his psyche and self: idiosyncracies of man and machine merged seamlessly into harmonic executions. Measured movements over wavering, mostly parallel silver streaks as the conductor orchestrates the to-and-fro in succinct, rhythmic motions of hand a short distance ahead. The impetus’ for the Hogger to perform as if a blue-collar musician; to cause his seasoned instrument with its famed, “blown,” throaty-throbbing tune as leitmotiv to rise and fall midst the discriminate din of air being pounded into compression, only to be exhausted in menacing serpentine hiss over clamoring, quarrelsome steel punctuated by an alerting bell and an affirming chime.
