A contentious fossilian commodity finite; exothermic prehistoric residue, but [in]arguably necessary yet [in]arguably moved by rail efficiently, depending on which side of the line-in-the-sand you stand or straddle. After the September 11th attack, New York City conceived a masterplan to rebuild and reimagine the World Trade Center campus. The Oculus is one of many buildings that were part of this masterplan.

The Oculus was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and is intended to resemble a dove leaving a hand. Work began in 2008, and the Oculus was opened on March 3, 2016.

The Oculus is a critical part of the New York City mass transit system. In addition to serving 12 subway lines, it is also home to retail shops, coffee shops, restaurants, art exhibits, and musical events.

The structure is oriented to align with the solar angles of the sun each September 11th, from 8:46 a.m., when the first plane struck the north tower, until 10:28 a.m., when the second tower collapsed.

We had actionable intel that a northbound was imminent: we just didn’t know exactly when it would arrive at Joso on UP’s “Washy” aka “Ayer Sub.” Even with scanner and nearby repeater, interception of radio traffic was limited to Screwtape Letters comms: Dispatcher 41’s one-way queries and responses to train crews and track inspectors. I’d always wanted to capture from up on high a Canada-bound train from the north side of the stilted bridge. With less than an hour to spare I trekked up onto one ridge after another – scoping for an ideal location. Having set up, composed, broken down several times, all-in-all hiking about two miles, I settled on a promontory that afforded what I thought was the optimal vantage point. Leaning into and getting pushed around by 40-plus-mile-an-hour winds, I eked out an enclave to shield myself and gear from the violence of the gale force. Eventually this empty unit potash train came into view slowing its approach to the restricted 30 mph to tightrope the Snake River over Joso Bridge; then snake into and through the hairs of my finder. With my heavy f/2.8 tele-mirrorless combo mounted on my trusty Manfrotto all braced against one of the nearby basalt columns so pervasive on the 81,000 square-mile Columbia Plateau I managed to squeeze off this Kodachromesque-saturated image reminiscent of more than thirty years ago when a select few of us had the privilege of capturing the last days of BN trains easing over the four famous former SP&S bridges further down along the Snake spanning high over Box, Wilson, Bouvey, and Burr Canyons.(12Apr18 ©)

Delicatessen on Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn has a great ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎sign‬ with wonderful green ‪#‎script‬ lettering. This ‪#‎deli‬ has been closed as long as we can remember and the ‪#‎signage‬ is peeling away but it still looks great to us. The unmistakable silhouette of a GP30 heads headlong into a seething snow storm – snow like so much desert sand – swirling about nearly obscures the image with flares as the unavoidable profusion of flakes quickly form droplets on the lens. Slipping by a dune of crumbling Washington State basalt on century-old 90# sticks nearing MP 83 en route to Coulee City on the CW sub is SW 2422. A former Santa Fe Cleburne rebuild more accustomed to arid operations, she finds herself climbing down eponymous Rattlesnake Hill. Whatever rattlesnakes may be around they are surely in a state of stasis, holed up in a den as I insanely brave the insane wind chill to bag this image the day after Christmas instead of being holed up in my own warm den. And I ask myself as I have too many times to count: “What makes me do such irrational things just to get the shot?” I have no answer. (© 26Dec18)

On a still warmed sunsetting August day, suspended in the melted margarine sky sediment stirred up by combines harvesting wheat turns to ever so slightly drifting dust cloaking a westbound Eastern Washington Gateway Scoot Train taking the rise just west of Hite where diesels grumbling the head-end bids good evening to the “Three Sisters,” then two long, one short, one long for Stroup Road. The Sisters? Three out-of-place trees. In the middle of nowhere but wheatland: as far as the eye can reach. And those in tow 4750 CH’s? They’ll find their way to Reardan – the next station – and “spots” on down the line where they’ll fill with the very harvest collected by sweat-faced men and their colossal combines. (15Aug17 ©)
