The unmistakable silhouette of a GP30 heads headlong into a seething snow storm – snow like so much desert sand – swirling about nearly obscures the image with flares as the unavoidable profusion of flakes quickly form droplets on the lens. Slipping by a dune of crumbling Washington State basalt on century-old 90# sticks nearing MP 83 en route to Coulee City on the CW sub is SW 2422. A former Santa Fe Cleburne rebuild more accustomed to arid operations, she finds herself climbing down eponymous Rattlesnake Hill. Whatever rattlesnakes may be around they are surely in a state of stasis, holed up in a den as I insanely brave the insane wind chill to bag this image the day after Christmas instead of being holed up in my own warm den. And I ask myself as I have too many times to count: “What makes me do such irrational things just to get the shot?” I have no answer. (© 26Dec18)

On a still warmed sunsetting August day, suspended in the melted margarine sky sediment stirred up by combines harvesting wheat turns to ever so slightly drifting dust cloaking a westbound Eastern Washington Gateway Scoot Train taking the rise just west of Hite where diesels grumbling the head-end bids good evening to the “Three Sisters,” then two long, one short, one long for Stroup Road. The Sisters? Three out-of-place trees. In the middle of nowhere but wheatland: as far as the eye can reach. And those in tow 4750 CH’s? They’ll find their way to Reardan – the next station – and “spots” on down the line where they’ll fill with the very harvest collected by sweat-faced men and their colossal combines. (15Aug17 ©)

Twilight and the first star of the evening: the headlight of this near silhouetted DPU draws the eye to itself as the sun has taken her warmth leaving another day to the cold night coming. Her receding residual light faintly beaming through the celestial prism creates a magical hue above the vast Eastern Washington horizon weaving a seamless transition from red to cobalt and vice versa. This unit oil, having just cleared West Lamphier has come to a stop. Shortly it’ll slip away and out of sight itself down Sprague Hill heading – West. This evening I find the Lakeside Sub is a non-stop procession of westbounds jumping from one block to the next waiting for a favorable light to proceed as eastbounds in the darkness beyond look for cover in sidings the likes of Tokio, Essig, Paha, Keystone, and Sprague. It’ll be a long night for the men and women running on the hundred-quarter-some-mile Lakeside. But they already know it's par for the course. (05Dec17 ©)

This @pepsi "spectacular" was created in 1936 by the Artkraft Strauss Sign Corp for the Pepsi-Cola bottling plant that was located on this waterfront area of ‪#‎Queens‬. The plant was demolished and high-rise residential towers took its place in 2004 but luckily the ‪#‎neonsign‬ survived and was reinstalled slightly to the north of its original location. Turning another silent into a violent night. A methodical violence that is: disturbing the dead and the dead-asleep alike. Hootin’, rootin’ and a tootin’ – Cowboys and their metal mares – as if nightmarish apparitions ridin’ into some souled high plains town on steel horses to wrangle then, just as quickly as they appear, steal away with the community’s bounty like booty. No, not like that nefarious ’69 cinematic Wild Bunch, but professionals. A Band of Brothers. Eastern Washington Gateway Railroaders. Die-hards. In fact. Present day grunts armed with orders to take; comms to coordinate the taking; the skill to execute the taking near effortlessly; the precision to take as efficiently as possible. Boots-on-the-ground, got each other's six operators operating on the cusp of railroading past. High above, the recently retired CWGG wheat laurels logo still and still will herald the arrival and departure of this timeless cacophony as it will the corrugated crib elevator with its bearing friction 40’ cars box platform permanently chained, rusted in the upright position. A scene, but for the crew van, anachronistic: may as well be unfolding in 1968 instead of a half-century later. Whatever century it may be, or what wristed analog standard railroad time, or obstacle, the objective is accomplished. Always. (© 08Jun18)

A Jack goes to pot in Chamberlin on ex-Milwaukee Road real estate, Dakota Southern. One can only wonder if this once celebrated “Centennial” – DDA40X 6925 – will ever be restored, or simply saved from her agonizing demise of slowly-but-surely oxidizing into the central South Dakota color-rust earth. Aside from serving as an eight-thousand gallon fuel bunker, having been plundered of her dynamic braking apparatus, and otherwise donor of homogeneous EMD parts, the near 100-foot-long, head-hanging sixty-six-hundred horse dreadnaught, shamefully moored along the shores of the mighty Mo nowhere near the open seas of amber waves of wheat and sand she once plied, still appears ripe for resurrection. Hopefully, her owner will consider her historical significance and act, for posterity’s sake, soon. (© 28Aug18)
