A minute past midnight conductor Ryan Reierson rolls the Eastern Washington Gateway Scoot train by at Fictenberg (most likely a misspelling of the German Fichtenberg) under a cloudless very starry night. The 30-second exposure sends the train into warp speed though its actual speed hovers around 10 miles an hour. Out here, though near US Hwy 2, it can get unnerving in the black of night when you’re alone, waiting for the train, its headlight searching out the night as it makes its way to you surely, but ever so slowly as the coyotes, cougars and other curious creatures of the night make their unseen presence known. Soon the rails begin to wake in snaps and pops exponentially as the weight of the train nears. As the procession comes into earshot the squeaking and squawking locomotive running gear immixed with the grumbling and whining of their prime movers followed by the long line of cars rocking and rolling, drawbars dropping here and there on account of less than favorable track alignment and cross elevation. In minutes the squealing flanges and droning diesels have passed back into the darkness and the critters of the night take off where they left, but not before the time-honored “Good Roll-By at Fictenberg, 328” is given and the distinctive crackle of the radio relays the engineer’s confirmation. “Roger that! Good roll-by at Fictenberg. See you down the road, 328 out.” as the smell of diesel exhaust lingers in the cool air. (©19Apr17)

Arriving just in time to pixilate this electrifying capture, an eastbound BNSF stack sees green at the east end of double track on the Columbia River Sub. Already, the hiss of releasing brakes slithers through the blackness as Zeus hurls a brace of negatively-charged cloud-to-ground lighting bolts that crack the scene like a broken mirror. This ‪#‎barber‬ shop not only had an amazing old ‪#‎sign‬ and ‪#‎handpainted‬ gold leaf lettering in the window but also had stenciled ‪#‎barbershop‬ tools including scissors, razors and brushes along the top of the roll gate. We also loved all the old ‪#‎signage‬ in the windows showing the variety of ‪#‎hair‬ cuts and styles they specialized in. 35 mm film photo is from 2004 and appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". 02:56 crew change at Cole’s Crossing (homestead in the background) somewhere along US 2 between night and a barley dozen degree morning. In the 45 cab, Eastern Washington Gateway Engineer “Jay” Pospisil (aka Popsicle) and Conductor Scott Rohrig have just been briefed by and relieved the previous crew to continue the train’s trek west on the venerable “CW.” Some 2100 feet into the icy, countlessly pinholed-black, flashing-red Fred dutifully comms control-stand-perched Mary he’s good-to-go and Jay releases the binders throttle in opposite hand opens it to give his horses the gitty up. Just above the headlight I spot Orion’s belt and I pause to consider how much tonnage this inimitable ’69 LaGrange mare has hauled about murica while she proudly wore Espee’s iconic scarlet and grey dress, and how many tons she helped shove black and blue over Mullan Pass while stabled, fed and ploughing for Montana Rail Link? Here on the EWG, she still earns her keep: daily, for the foreseeable future. Rolling, and that unmistakable squeaking of flexing flexicoil trucks and EMD turbo whine fade and vanish into the arctic darkness, my image securely frozen in timeless time. (23Dec17 ©)

Out here “at” Hanson because there is no town to be “in,” this cold December night’s scintillating circumpolar stars streak through the heavens as they arc about the North Star leaving 468 seconds (that’s 1.95 degrees of angle, for you star buffs) of trails carved into space and time. It’s 04:24, and what hubristic Northern Pacific land-grabbers had hoped would become a thriving community as its built-in-the-very-late 1800’s Central Washington branch line was surveyed to serve the expectant rise of hamlet Hanson never materialized. Save for the Aermotor well tower sans its windmill and vane of the lone long-vanished homestead, more likely, the lonely outpost for the former elevator operator and family just across the county road from the two sets of elevators and “station” sign are all that tangibly mark Hanson as an actual place. At 2110 feet, some plus or minus 200 feet higher than the two whistle-stops a few mile poles down either direction of clickety-clack, the elevators are still served from time-to-time as the scene at hand shows and glows red from the flashing EOT hanging on the shadow of a five-car-cut of covered hoppers leaving the Hanson elevator track being picked up by the westbound Washington Eastern Scoot Train. The cars will be set out at Hartline only to be brought east for unloading with the next eastbound Scoot Train on account Hanson’s east switch having been removed due to damage years ago making it safer and easier to move the loads west, then east. Indeed, “through hardship to the stars,” the Central Washington has survived through two mergers, several owners and operators, with the most recent operator, Washington Eastern of the Western Group, granted a 10-year operating agreement by CW owner WSDOT to breath new life into the venerable line. 🍳🍔 Empire Diner is one of the last free-standing diners left in Manhattan and is located inside a 1946 Fodero Dining Car. It closed in 2015, after a second failed attempt to revive it. S&S Diner on the edge of the #Wynwood Arts District in Miami was established in 1938. The #diner had a horseshoe-shaped counter with stool seating that held only 18 people. There were no private tables or booths and was cash only serving just breakfast ☕️🍳 or lunch 🍔🍟. Unfortunately the #vintage diner was forced to close in 2016 after the land it is located on was sold for $33 million to a real estate developer. Luigi's Pizza in Park Slope, Brooklyn has been in business since 1973. We absolutely love @luigispizzaparkslope 's #signage with the #script #lettering and are huge fans of their fresh mozzarella #pizza 🍕which is sprinkled with their home-grown fresh herbs. The 2nd-generation owner Giovanni Lanzo told us, "my father Luigi emigrated here from Calabria where he was a farmer. He opened this #Pizzeria using his family's recipes for the sauce and pizza. He still grows many of the fresh ingredients we use including tomatoes 🍅 and herbs 🌿 at his farm in Staten Island". Williams Seafood in Savannah, Georgia has an amazing #vintage #neonsign with, coincidently wonderful Christmas colors. This seafood restaurant had its beginnings as a roadside concession in 1936 and later expanded into a full sit-down restaurant. It’s 0312, somewhere between late and early – depending on your perspective of time – as Lind Turn wraps up a long night of “local” work on the Lakeside Sub. SD75M 272 and her sister hold hands as they play in the first significant winter snowfall. But they’ll have to sit tight for a bit before they can make their final pick up at Marshall of tanks from the W&I as a crewman under the amber glow of sodium vapor is seen fighting the ornery “heated” switch that’s ice-cold-stubborn and doesn’t want to play. He’ll wrestle with it a few more times between having the hogger run the very abbreviated Turn over the turnout a time or two before the switchman gets the switch to play ball and throw. Within minutes they’ll have what they came for, complete an air test, hop on and warm up in the 75’s wide cab while waiting for the light to change and does. On the move, they’ll tie up at Yardley and head home as I pack up my chilled gear and trudge through the powder towards my toasty rig to highball home as well after workin’ late early. (16Dec17 ©)

Loft's Candies #vintage #neonsign with block and #script metal channel lettering uncovered on Nassau Street in the Financial District. Hidden underneath a vinyl awning for years, this #neon beauty was recently uncovered when the #storefront was leased by Two Boots Pizza @twobootspizza who hired our friend @steveespopowers to create a new #sign for the store. Instead of just removing the #signage, the good news is that Two Boots will be restoring the sign! @steveespopowers convinced them to restore it with the help of @lettherebeneon. We love when we hear that a new tenant appreciates the history of a store and its signage. Black Gold in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn is a record, coffee and antique store all in one. They serve great ‪#‎coffee‬ and ‪#‎cookies‬ and ‪#‎muffins‬ and have a unique assortment of ‪#‎records‬ that are rotated regularly. The ‪#‎store‬ also has a collection of ‪#‎antiques‬ and even some taxidermy for sale. We love the ‪#‎handpainted‬ signage in the window and the bench outside to sit and have coffee and people watch on Court Street. Clover Delicatessen 🍀 is owned and operated by the third-generation of the Cuttita family. They lovingly maintain their gorgeous #neon #signs that line both the front and side of their #storefront. We love the #font that was used as well as the 2-color #neonsign in red and green which is a combination not seen too often (at least in #NYC). We also are big fans of the #vintage street sign they have in their window.
