Williams Seafood in Savannah, Georgia has an amazing #vintage #neonsign with, coincidently wonderful Christmas colors. This seafood restaurant had its beginnings as a roadside concession in 1936 and later expanded into a full sit-down restaurant. Clover Delicatessen 🍀 is owned and operated by the third-generation of the Cuttita family. They lovingly maintain their gorgeous #neon #signs that line both the front and side of their #storefront. We love the #font that was used as well as the 2-color #neonsign in red and green which is a combination not seen too often (at least in #NYC). We also are big fans of the #vintage street sign they have in their window. A BNSF double stack on double track wests urgent as bands of disgruntled clouds on the move east drift, slowly, shifting, rising with the lay of arable immixed scabbed channel land along Coal Coulee in which Coal Creek water colors the otherwise semi-arid braun vastness of the “Evergreen” State’s breadbasket. Parting the wind ES44AC 5802 and sun-faded MAC 9980 split Downs Road: the gates do their thing though no one waits for the train’s passing. ¶ In a nickel of posts, near Lamona, where Coal’s all but parched esophagus constricts it’ll be back to single main and more tracking – loosely – and jumping – here and there – the purling Coal, and later the longest ephemeral stream in North America, Crab Creek as man’s steel and nature’s water argue over the path of least resistance on their way to the ever bending, eternally building Columbia. The Crab at Beverly of Milwaukee Road fame; the Great Northern betwixt Rock Island and so named for its Colorado namesake’s characteristics Trinidad. ¶ In as long as it takes the two-high wells to follow each other through the frame all will fall silent, again: gates return to ready, red lights and bell quit, Doppler fading westward 2+1 motors and then…nothing. Oblivious to UP’s daily ‘cept Sunday HKSK (Hinkle-Spokane) slipping elevated through town over their heads, workin’-for-the-weekend commuters, Holiday travelers, Santa’s busy-bee shoppers, and truckers of soon-to-be-presents ‘round the tree head north on Division at Sprague – Heart of Spokane – either hurrying home, to a lonely room, in search of Black Friday deals, or delivering goods to fuel the Christmas spirit mayhem as pedestrians bar crawl to soak their sorrows of the season in sole gin else hoping to get lucky or just enjoying the evening strolling around the Convention Center after a bite avoiding the too many hopeless homeless panhandling. All the while an en vogue couple neath the dashing locomotive gaze into each other's dreamy eyes enjoying their Walker's luxury mattress, perpetually poised to experience its heavenly firmness unperturbed and undisturbed. They’ll be there tomorrow night again. As will the commuters, the deal seekers, the semi-drivers, strollers and crawlers, home bums, and, of course, the HKSK under bright lights in the big city. As for me…, I’m ducking out of the cold and slipping into Starbucks to the right of me to sip on some of her hot bean juice, alone, again. (24Nov17 ©)

Black Gold in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn is a record, coffee and antique store all in one. They serve great ‪#‎coffee‬ and ‪#‎cookies‬ and ‪#‎muffins‬ and have a unique assortment of ‪#‎records‬ that are rotated regularly. The ‪#‎store‬ also has a collection of ‪#‎antiques‬ and even some taxidermy for sale. We love the ‪#‎handpainted‬ signage in the window and the bench outside to sit and have coffee and people watch on Court Street. Carbone is an Italian-American restaurant on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, which opened in 2013. Chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi took over the space where Rocco Ristorante operated for close to 90 years. The third-generation owner Anthony DaSilva told us when we interviewed him for our book "New York Nights", that he"lost the space because his landlord raised his rent from $8,000 a month to $18,000 a month." Engineer Brett Engert of the Eastern Washington Railroad brings in the goods – 150,000 bushels of golden grain in 45 CH’s – at Telford Road (about midway between Cheney and Coulee City) with NIWX 9129 hoofing it out front with two stablemates teaming up as seen from a nearby cattle chute. The year’s copious harvest has the line’s elevators filled to overflowing – literally – necessitating round the clock “CW” train operations. It’s all hands on deck, for no sooner will this “Scoot Train” disgorge its whole crop and soft white wheat at Highline Grain-Four Lakes, and it’ll be running back west positing empties from Hite to Coulee City: this scene repeating itself many more times before Big Bend trackside elevators are ready to receive next year’s blond bounty. Brite Lite Barber Shop in Harlem is a favorite of ours because we not only love its #handpainted #signage but also love its #vintage poles outside. The #barber pole's colors are from a time when people went to barbers not only for just a #haircut or #shave but also for bloodletting and other medical procedures. The look of the pole is linked to bloodletting with the color red representing blood and white representing the bandages used to stem the bleeding. The pole itself was used to symbolize the stick that a patient squeezed to make the veins on his arm stand out more prominently for the bloodletting. In the USA the poles are red, white and blue while in Europe they are traditionally red and white. We also love the kid sitting on the bench outside waiting for his father to get his haircut. Sure. The lid was ominously threatening a damp closing to the day, but I couldn’t resist exercising the opportunity to catalog such a ménage à trois en couleur. I’ve been telling myself to make sure to get those haggard warbonnets on pixels before they’re retired; purged en masse. Even better: to catch one with a noodle-logoed deviant and a homeboy leading the charge, dynos a-screamin’ holding back some 120-odd tubs of Powder River Basin sub-bituminous jumping historic US Highway 10 which technically runs right in front of my residence where I’d been chillin’ with Deborah. “I think I’m gonna go chase that train. I’ve been meanin’ to add some Fe bonnets for my collection.” “Not without me!” Loaded up, scanner and “fish finder” (Remote ATCS) activated tells the Lakeside has no immediate eastbound traffic, and the “fish” I intend to catch is lined through Fishtrap and far beyond. We, westbound. I, scoping the usual spots ultimately deciding on the corner of Jack Brown Road and ol’ US 10. Set up in time to spare, Deborah strolls down Jack’s dusty road to take in the profusion of wildflowers and fowl and foliage swaying and singing and swishing in the brisk everlasting wind. Not long, but long enough for Deborah to disappear around the far bend, the threesome cut my finder and voilà. Down Brown’s lane and there she is. In and off we go somewhere for the next westbound, but that’s another image and story...(© 22May19)

Loft's Candies #vintage #neonsign with block and #script metal channel lettering uncovered on Nassau Street in the Financial District. Hidden underneath a vinyl awning for years, this #neon beauty was recently uncovered when the #storefront was leased by Two Boots Pizza @twobootspizza who hired our friend @steveespopowers to create a new #sign for the store. Instead of just removing the #signage, the good news is that Two Boots will be restoring the sign! @steveespopowers convinced them to restore it with the help of @lettherebeneon. We love when we hear that a new tenant appreciates the history of a store and its signage. Pearl Diner in lower Manhattan has been in business since the 1950s. This gorgeous overhanging ‪#‎neonsign‬ is original and still manages to look great even when all of the ‪#‎letters‬ are not lit. The menu is typical ‪#‎diner‬ fare, including ‪#‎burgers‬, ‪#‎milkshake‬ and ‪#‎pancakes‬ but they also serve ‪#‎Greek‬ specialties as the owner is Greek. The diner is highly unusual in that it is located in its own single story building amidst the huge ‪#‎skyscrapers‬ of the financial district. We love their ‪#‎food‬ and their 50s style booths. Dublin House is a family-owned #Irish #pub which has been in business since 1921. It was founded by John Carway, an Irish immigrant from Dublin who rented the space during Prohibition. We absolutely love its #vintage #neonsign in the shape of a #harp and its letters that say "TAP ROOM" and "BAR" which blink on and off. The bartender, Mr. Daly told us that the reason the #neon #sign has the words "tap room" is that Dublin House was one of the first #bars to offer #beer on tap. Azucar Ice Cream Company in Little Havava, Miami specializes in artisanal #icecream and #sorbet in #Cuban and tropical flavors. It was founded in 2011 and is known for its #Abuela Maria flavor that has Maria #cookies and ruby red guava and cream cheese in a vanilla ice cream and our favorite Cafe con Leche ice cream (Cuban #coffee with #Oreo). We fell in love with their #storefront with the huge cone holding 5 scoops and a cherry on top and their #neon #sign. Today in NYC, it sure feels like we are in Miami with the high heat and humidity. Mouth-washing, diesel-gargling, carbon-brushed, breath-reeking, blackened-jugs, tumbling, in slow-idle, chomping-at-the-bit, like so many horses waiting, waiting to team their brawn; to push forward behind their flag-bearer waving a faded-to-lead, black and white ‘stead red, white and blue against a backdrop of gritty armour yellow, grey-dulled by repeated internal and external heatings while just beyond the soot-stained flutes, flange-squeal, slack-action, multi-modal-merica, tables-stacked, doubled-up, express-charging federal’s banner blurs.

I was surprised to see water in the creek. We had an atmospheric river the previous week, and there was snow on the hills.

The creek was challenging to photograph; it was overgrown and muddy. I had to do some work post-processing to make it stand out even a little.

I was down in Mojave last week. I could only go out and photograph one day and have wanted to photograph around Oak Creek for a while. Oak Creek is a back road between Mojave and Tehachapi. It goes through the wind farms. As you drive up it, the vegetation changes as the altitude increases.

I had another shot without motion blur on the windmills, but I decided on this one.
