Normandie Bake Shop in Brooklyn had a great ‪#‎neonsign‬ complete with ‪#‎script‬ lettering that at one point must have brought in lots of customers. We could not find out much about the history of this ‪#‎bakery‬ except that it was known for its black and white ‪#‎cookies‬. We hope the relics of this great ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎sign‬ was saved. ‪#‎storefront‬ ‪#‎disappearingfaceofnewyork‬ ‪#‎80sixd‬ ‪#‎neongeeks‬ ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎signage‬ ‪#‎type‬ ‪#‎typography‬ ‪#‎font‬ ‪#‎fontastic‬ ‪#‎jj_texttypographical‬ ‪#‎trailblazers_urbex‬ ‪#‎tv_retrotype‬ ‪#‎foundtype‬ ‪#‎neonbulletholes‬ ‪#‎ipulledoverforthis‬ ‪#‎everything_signage‬ ‪#‎trb_ipoft_signs‬ ‪#‎tv_typography‬ ‪#‎typevstime‬

Cum-u-what? Yeah, that’s Greek, I mean Latin for the ominous anvil cloud formation that hangs over the elevations of the pristine-pine-covered Coeur d’Alene National Forest, having the potential of delivering the blow of a pounding thunderstorm that would make Thor proud. Closer to the ground and the action at hand, the former Northern Pacific rails upon which a newly re-minted pair of second generation BNSF Geeps peen and ply are weather beaten and hammered beyond recognition not only having bowed laterally but kinked and buckled at the joints from over 100-years of usage and eventual non-usage and disrepair. A sorry state of affairs that does little justice to their past and present owner’s proud heritage. Post Falls, on the Coeur d'Alene branch, is just across the border from Washington in the Panhandle. Once served by several railroads, notably the Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Milwaukee Road, and Union Pacific (and their respective predecessors), is now a monopoly. The zenith of service over ten decades slowly, steadily tapering off from hard usage to a trickle: once a week. Down from as many as five days a week not too long ago. It is doubtful that branchlines like these will weather many more storms before succumbing to abandonment rendering images like this to the annals of railroad antiquity. Get your pictures while you can! If not this branchline, then one close to you. As rail enthusiasts, we have the responsibility to document these scenes for future generations of railfans. On a comfortable August night, the inbound and outbound crew having conferred, the all-but-two loads 57-car eastbound train HL03 is now the HL03-2 as it changes hands in Creston, technically the highest point on the CW. Hence the eponym. Having relieved engineer Zach Hastings, engineer Ted Curphey will continue the trek and make short shrift of bringing the HL03-2 into Highline grain with the triga of two second-gen SD45’s and a SD40T-2. About an hour before sunset and the refraction of light within and through a veil of cloud cover makes for a surreal winter scene. Engineer Jerry Miller is poised to swing his butted 45’s down and ‘round the bend westward. He and his conductor have just spotted five covered hoppers under the Hite spout. With everything buttoned up, handbrakes spun on the spot, Fred hung, a quick set and release, the conductor gives Miller the highball to proceed into a boreal martianscape. (01Mar17 ©)

Having just whipped around apply named 1572’ Black Butte some 300-odd-feet below, three olyphanting motors bring good things to life as they make short shrift of the 1300’ but HOT, “Baby Q” symbol QSSEALT6-20, (Seattle-Alliance, Texas). Racing towards Stratford – just below my vantage point – the succinct train is on a flap of land skirted and irrigated by Crab Creek, typical of middle-Washington where every fraction of fertile acreage is cultivated. On either side buttes, that, if spied from above on Google maps, look like dry leprosy where erosion of the repeated prehistoric Missoula Lake floods and receding ice shelves have literally eaten away earth’s living tissue leaving nothing but rock like petrified bone. In the distance, rising up and out of the frame at 3617’ is partially snow-covered Badger Mountain where, on the other side, is nestled-nicely Wenatchee on either side of the Columbian flow. In unincorporated city-block-big Stratford, one of the homeowners of respectably inhabited structures along its main drag had the foresight to preserve the former Great Northern station sign while just a few hundred feet further down Stratford Road, a propped up, must-be century-old gas station, succumbs, very slowly, to time indifferent. Belmont, CA - October 2020

After saying goodbye to my Friend who’s accepted an Engineer position with the Canadian National in the Midwest, I wasn’t quite ready to head back to my pad and actually had some company business to take care of while in the Panhandle. Most of the morning and early afternoon proved difficult for photographic possibilities: even for my taste. It seemed there would be no opportunity to combine pleasure with business this day. But I listened to my gut instinct and decided to wait it out for favorable combinators to work their magic. Not until she lay her head down to slumber on a pillow of December-down-frosted mountains did she shine so fine through her evening negligee of chiffon clouds as the tail end of a BNSF westbound slips over the windblown Pend Oreille waving goodbye to a bittersweet day. Bon chance mon Ami! Stay tuned for "Fortuna Redux ~ Part One" (06Dec17 ©)

Antelis Pharmacy in Midwood, Brooklyn is sadly no longer operating out of this ‪#‎storefront‬. We loved its ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎sign‬ with its ‪#‎script‬ lettering which was left behind when they moved further down the street. The fact that they left the ‪#‎signage‬ behind does not surprise us because all of the ‪#‎store‬ owners we have interviewed over the years have repeatedly told us that it is a "real labor of love" to maintain these ‪#‎neonsign‬ because they need constant work to fix broken transformers, fuses and other things that get broken when exposed to rain & snow. This photo taken in 2011 appears in our newly published book "Store Front II- A History Preserved". We hope that someone like @lettherebeneon saves this beauty from the dumpster! ‪#‎signgeeks‬ ‪#‎type‬ ‪#‎typography‬ ‪#‎tv_typography‬ ‪#‎tv_retrotype‬ ‪#‎signcompany‬ ‪#‎fontlove‬ ‪#‎typevstime‬ ‪#‎ipulledoverforthis‬ ‪#‎jj_texttypograhical‬

We amble worked and tired into Almira ahead of schedule. Our fellow rails rested, hadn’t but barely left the office and still over an hour away from relieving us. My trusty wristed analog shows 2216. Enough for us. We tied down our diesel and oil sweated sky blue steel mares and wagon train just as it seemed the sun was rising from out of the southern hemisphere. Breaking the day prematurely, instead the nocturnal waxing gibbous tangerine orb reflecting, posed as her while roving “Super” Conductor Scott Rohrig finished his meticulous M-Crew housekeeping to ensure the wheel is in good order so too our spots duly spotted and clocked. As I work quickly to capture the ephemeral scene, I retrospect on what it is to “run” a train. Alone. Spartan, as compared to “modern” motors, engineering your train from the cab din and controls dim of a Millenial Dash-2 can get monotonous at times. Everthemore, even bumbling along, the immutable whining turbo and growling DB intermittently at your back, needle bouncing on the ten, rocking, clacking and clicking, truck springs squeaking, endlessly, rolling, on 100-year-old joints ad infinitum, my attentiveness, unwavering. Sure, I don’t have a Class One 8k or 10k train in tow or meets to manage nor signals to spy, but the principles of effective train handling come to bare regardless if it's 60 some odd empty 80’s PS2’s or 115 286k covered hoppers gliding over seamless 132# CWR. Slack run in or run out can and does have negative ramifications. The constant concentration of a single mind and vigilance of a single set of eyes over 10-12 hours strains even the most seasoned railroader coming off of a mere 10 hours rest. So, safe to say, ignoration of the obvious downside to one-man crews can only be defined as the epitome of the Cassandra Complex. And though my conductor doesn’t ride with me I’m always relieved to know that he’s watching our train, constantly and consistently rolling it by to ensure all is well. (© 18Jun19)

Still a fair amount of rain today but I was lucky enough to catch 3 rainbows when the sun came back out

Category: Single/Stacked (sort of? I'll explain)

STORY:

I had planned a photo down in Quechee, Vermont with the Milky Rising over the gorge, but I was too early and didn't have the energy or motivation to wait 3 hours. I also live about 2 hours away, so I decided to try and capture the Milky Way rising over the bridge. I couldn't believe how much traffic came through at 11:30 pm EST. This was my favorite shot of the light trails crossing the bridge. This is a single frame, but as I was editing the photo in Lightroom I saved multiple edits. I liked the last 5 edits and blended them together in PS to get blend the golden core and the faded bluish night sky. So that's why I added "stacked" as a category even though it's the same still frame.

I think I'll go back in a few months to try and get the shot I had originally planned.

Solid, liquid, gas, i.e., snow, water, clouds…and cold and wind and rocks. That was Trinidad today. 14 November. The time of year when the elements as atmospheric forces become unruly and dispense their “ugliness” upon the landscape and all that is about it. Most would snap their collar up, turn their back to the chilling wind, and walk away in search of soonest shelter; preferably warm. I guess that’s one way to “look” at it. But it’s not nearly the only way to look at, or rather, to “see” what is at hand. Call it potential if you will. Perspective-potential? Yup. To be able to eek out something relatively pleasing (hopeful) out of what appears to be unpleasing (hopeless). What was it Andy Dufresne said, "Get busy living, or get busy dying.” Yeah. I know. I got it, but don't get it. The doctrine of divine, unblemished sunshine or nothing at all – still? – reigns supreme, though I say "Sic semper tyrannis!" and go my way come hell or high water; rain or shine(ola). By crikey! I will apply my mind and all I’ve installed therein to what is before me to do what I have come to do: capture the scene regardless of inclemency. That’s right: improvise, adapt, overcome. And what I “saw” here was a teeny-tiny train conducting its Sisyphean exercise in the midst of this primordial landscape misshapen by unimaginable cataclysmic forces, weather notwithstanding. So what about the train? Seems completely irrelevant, save to provide a pedestrian perspective of how infinitely “small” man and his machine are in sardonic comparison, and I kinda like trains too. Standing in an open field of bluebonnets and taking photos during a thunder/lightning storm probably not wise, but that’s precisely what I did Friday night. I managed to capture my first ever bolts of lightning before a heavy downpour began, may try again sometime.

A minute past midnight conductor Ryan Reierson rolls the Eastern Washington Gateway Scoot train by at Fictenberg (most likely a misspelling of the German Fichtenberg) under a cloudless very starry night. The 30-second exposure sends the train into warp speed though its actual speed hovers around 10 miles an hour. Out here, though near US Hwy 2, it can get unnerving in the black of night when you’re alone, waiting for the train, its headlight searching out the night as it makes its way to you surely, but ever so slowly as the coyotes, cougars and other curious creatures of the night make their unseen presence known. Soon the rails begin to wake in snaps and pops exponentially as the weight of the train nears. As the procession comes into earshot the squeaking and squawking locomotive running gear immixed with the grumbling and whining of their prime movers followed by the long line of cars rocking and rolling, drawbars dropping here and there on account of less than favorable track alignment and cross elevation. In minutes the squealing flanges and droning diesels have passed back into the darkness and the critters of the night take off where they left, but not before the time-honored “Good Roll-By at Fictenberg, 328” is given and the distinctive crackle of the radio relays the engineer’s confirmation. “Roger that! Good roll-by at Fictenberg. See you down the road, 328 out.” as the smell of diesel exhaust lingers in the cool air. (©19Apr17)

We always love finding old Coca-Cola #signage as it takes us right back to the time when the company gave these signs away for free to businesses that sold their product. I was down in Mojave last week. I could only go out and photograph one day and have wanted to photograph around Oak Creek for a while. Oak Creek is a back road between Mojave and Tehachapi. It goes through the wind farms. As you drive up it, the vegetation changes as the altitude increases.

I had another shot without motion blur on the windmills, but I decided on this one.
