Evenin’ comin’ down off the Columbia River Sub over Latah Bridge and Junction – empty – headin’ back for more, on its way back to Powder River coal mines: Black Thunder, Buckskin, Eagle Butte, Rawhide, and more. A peerless conveyor of coal in aluminum tubs over a mile long. A contentious fossilian commodity finite; exothermic prehistoric residue, but [in]arguably necessary yet [in]arguably moved by rail efficiently, depending on which side of the line-in-the-sand you stand or straddle. Argument aside, the renewable warmth of May’s setting sun inarguably warmed the finite scene for a splendid dying light capture: agreed? (© 02May2018)

Winter in Saskatchewan at sunset

After the September 11th attack, New York City conceived a masterplan to rebuild and reimagine the World Trade Center campus. The Oculus is one of many buildings that were part of this masterplan.

The Oculus was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and is intended to resemble a dove leaving a hand. Work began in 2008, and the Oculus was opened on March 3, 2016.

The Oculus is a critical part of the New York City mass transit system. In addition to serving 12 subway lines, it is also home to retail shops, coffee shops, restaurants, art exhibits, and musical events.

The structure is oriented to align with the solar angles of the sun each September 11th, from 8:46 a.m., when the first plane struck the north tower, until 10:28 a.m., when the second tower collapsed.

Eeriely silent – the florescent landing lights and glow of what at first glance appears to be an alien craft counting down to liftoff thrusting its rocket, spear-like plume of light cutting into the black, fog-cloaked pitch of Govan. Ghost “town” of near nil inhabitants living, of a schoolhouse haunted, of infernos past repeated, and of bloody ax murders unsolved. A Dantean “place” that may as well be the netherworld: able to unnerve steadiest of soul…in the dead of night. Mangy dogs unseen growling; howling packs of yipping coyotes in the distance near; faint shadows of concrete elevators monolithic; wraiths appear staring out from broken tattered-curtain windows of homesteads homeless. Ice-cased from the brume atmosphere the earthbound tunnel motor has just come to rest holding the CW main pending a relief crew to take her and train farther west. Further. Into twilight. We had actionable intel that a northbound was imminent: we just didn’t know exactly when it would arrive at Joso on UP’s “Washy” aka “Ayer Sub.” Even with scanner and nearby repeater, interception of radio traffic was limited to Screwtape Letters comms: Dispatcher 41’s one-way queries and responses to train crews and track inspectors. I’d always wanted to capture from up on high a Canada-bound train from the north side of the stilted bridge. With less than an hour to spare I trekked up onto one ridge after another – scoping for an ideal location. Having set up, composed, broken down several times, all-in-all hiking about two miles, I settled on a promontory that afforded what I thought was the optimal vantage point. Leaning into and getting pushed around by 40-plus-mile-an-hour winds, I eked out an enclave to shield myself and gear from the violence of the gale force. Eventually this empty unit potash train came into view slowing its approach to the restricted 30 mph to tightrope the Snake River over Joso Bridge; then snake into and through the hairs of my finder. With my heavy f/2.8 tele-mirrorless combo mounted on my trusty Manfrotto all braced against one of the nearby basalt columns so pervasive on the 81,000 square-mile Columbia Plateau I managed to squeeze off this Kodachromesque-saturated image reminiscent of more than thirty years ago when a select few of us had the privilege of capturing the last days of BN trains easing over the four famous former SP&S bridges further down along the Snake spanning high over Box, Wilson, Bouvey, and Burr Canyons.(12Apr18 ©)

Delicatessen on Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn has a great ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎sign‬ with wonderful green ‪#‎script‬ lettering. This ‪#‎deli‬ has been closed as long as we can remember and the ‪#‎signage‬ is peeling away but it still looks great to us. The unmistakable silhouette of a GP30 heads headlong into a seething snow storm – snow like so much desert sand – swirling about nearly obscures the image with flares as the unavoidable profusion of flakes quickly form droplets on the lens. Slipping by a dune of crumbling Washington State basalt on century-old 90# sticks nearing MP 83 en route to Coulee City on the CW sub is SW 2422. A former Santa Fe Cleburne rebuild more accustomed to arid operations, she finds herself climbing down eponymous Rattlesnake Hill. Whatever rattlesnakes may be around they are surely in a state of stasis, holed up in a den as I insanely brave the insane wind chill to bag this image the day after Christmas instead of being holed up in my own warm den. And I ask myself as I have too many times to count: “What makes me do such irrational things just to get the shot?” I have no answer. (© 26Dec18)

This @pepsi "spectacular" was created in 1936 by the Artkraft Strauss Sign Corp for the Pepsi-Cola bottling plant that was located on this waterfront area of ‪#‎Queens‬. The plant was demolished and high-rise residential towers took its place in 2004 but luckily the ‪#‎neonsign‬ survived and was reinstalled slightly to the north of its original location. Turning another silent into a violent night. A methodical violence that is: disturbing the dead and the dead-asleep alike. Hootin’, rootin’ and a tootin’ – Cowboys and their metal mares – as if nightmarish apparitions ridin’ into some souled high plains town on steel horses to wrangle then, just as quickly as they appear, steal away with the community’s bounty like booty. No, not like that nefarious ’69 cinematic Wild Bunch, but professionals. A Band of Brothers. Eastern Washington Gateway Railroaders. Die-hards. In fact. Present day grunts armed with orders to take; comms to coordinate the taking; the skill to execute the taking near effortlessly; the precision to take as efficiently as possible. Boots-on-the-ground, got each other's six operators operating on the cusp of railroading past. High above, the recently retired CWGG wheat laurels logo still and still will herald the arrival and departure of this timeless cacophony as it will the corrugated crib elevator with its bearing friction 40’ cars box platform permanently chained, rusted in the upright position. A scene, but for the crew van, anachronistic: may as well be unfolding in 1968 instead of a half-century later.
