What's that mysterious clear plastic thing in the upper left corner below the white bezel? We eventually realized that it's a minimalist *stand* for the device (as srburling notes), although it leaves no room for cables when the iPod Touch is positioned vertically.

I would say iPod nano 2nd gen would be successor of iPod mini, not of iPod nano 1st gen.

Possible portrait mode. Apple does have that slick tilt sensor, mabye they can finally put in a drop-safe harddrive feature.

My 3 iPods, left to right: 2nd generation 1 GB iPod shuffle in it's own little dock, 4th generation 8 GB iPod nano in Apple Universal Dock (older version), 2nd generation 4 GB iPod nano.
I tried to get a better shot but as it was windy the poor little iPod on the right kept falling flat on it's face. I like to take photos outdoors now, there's nothing like natural sunlight.
