I have been on a Lagunitas IPA kick on the weekends lately. And I ask myself why my weight loss hasn't been more dramatic.

Green King IPA (Export).

Brewed in the heart of the Suffolk in Bury St Edmunds, the characteristic hoppy taste and aroma comes from the use of Challenger and First Gold hops, which are combined with pale and crystal malts.

A bottle of IPA from Stone Brewing Co in Escondido, California, at Olympen in Oslo.

This 6,9% abv India Pale Ale from Stone Brewing Co is a vey untypical American IPA, the hops are more toned down - not in your face. The aroma was sweet but you can sense the amount of hops in it. The mouthfeel was big and rich, but not as sweet as the aroma indicated. The rich hops and the maltiness created a complex body, tasting of spice and fruits. A delicious beer!

Side label on the bottle of Dundulis Humulupu IPA listing its bitterness at 44 IBU.

The side label of the Ægir IPA informs us that this bottle (batch# 72) is best before July 2010. Oh, and the alcohol content isn't 5% or 0,5% but 6,5% abv - it's just the printing ink that's gone missing! Zoom in at the photo and see for yourself.

$15.95 w/ $6 bottle deposit, 1.89L Growler.

From tap to growler to glass quickly.

Intriguing aroma of pineapple, pine and fresh hops. Flavour is much more muted, basically a very clean ale with a mild bitter finish. Reminds me of an English IPA or even a Bitter.

Stone IPA. It's a deliciously hoppy IPA out of San Diego. At first blush, it has a wonderful, bitterness to it, followed by a smooth aftertaste that leaves the tastebuds screaming for more.

I think you could say that I like it.

Strobist: On-camera flash in commander mode and set at 1/4 (which is new - I've never used the on-board for anything but commander). SB-800 behind and to camera-left at 1/1, bounced off white umbrella. SB-600 to camera-right (about four inches from beer glass) at 1/128 fired through open Lightsphere.

"Out of the Ashes Smoked India Pale Ale mingles a soft sweet smoke with citrus zest in the aroma, each fighting for dominance. Strong hop bitterness cuts through at the end to keep this beer clean, bright and full of flavor. FCB utilizes hand-crafted malts from Copper Fox Distillery to process a floor malted, dried in a traditional wood-fired kiln, and smoked by smoldering select fruitwoods on top of the distillery kiln room’s cast iron stove to create the unique flavor palate of the Smoked IPA."

Fort Collins Brewery (Fort Collins, Colorado).

---> Me: I'm more and more confused as to how American brewers differentiate between Pale Ales, IPAs, and, so-called, session IPAs. This was a seemingly gently-hopped, slightly smoky pale ale (using malt smoked over apple-wood).

As the Chesapeake Real Ale Festival began, folk were sharing rare and out-of-state beers they had brought themselves. This beer was brought by Charley Wise, of Copper Fox Distillery (of Sperryville, Virginia). His distillery and malting house had provided the smoked malt for the beer.

A bottle of IPA from Southern Tier Brewing Company in Lakewood, New York, at HåndverkerStuene in Oslo.

Southern Tier IPA is a 6.5% abv india pale ale. It poured a clear golden color with a fine white head. Nice hoppy aroma, but not as fruity as the west coast IPAs - more grassy and subtle, with notes of caramel malts. Mouthfeel is sticky sweet, pretty rich for an IPA! Flavor starts out with a good dose of caramel malt. The hops, when they arrive, are grassy with light flowery notes, creating a nice harmony with the sweet malts. The beer has a nice bitter finish with a lingering sweetness.

Despite being a fairly sweet IPA, I found the overall balance really good. This is a rich and smooth IPA, a nice change from the hoppy but thinner west coast IPAs. I really enjoyed it.

A bottle of IPA from AleSmith Brewing Company in San Diego, California, at Håndverkerstuene in Oslo.

This 7,25% abv India Pale Ale poured a hazy golden color with a white head. Aroma dominated by floral west coast hops, simply delicious! Smooth mouthfeel with a nice carbonation. Flavor starts out with a good malt punch before the bitter hops kick in, creating a very balanced and refreshing India Pale Ale. Long, bitter resinous finish with a lingering caramel note. A great beer and a world class IPA!

Thanks to HaandBryggeriet for importing this beer to Norway.

Montagem de torneira do Autoclismo

Weighting in at just “only” 5.6% ABV, the Toasted Oak IPA is tripled-hopped and aged in oak for 41 days. It comes in a brown bottle but it pours out this pale gold color and smells exactly what you expect an IPA to smell like. It tastes like an IPA too, a fresh floral hoppiness with a hint of vanilla and sweetness, probably from the oak. It’s hard to really get more than a hint because the refreshing hoppiness is very forward.

Enjoying an Inversion IPA up in Petersville, AK.

Bridge’s IPA is a Northwestern Style Ale full of contradictions – Strong and clean flavour, with moderate bitterness and yet a soft floral aroma, displaying distinct tropical, citrus, lemon and grapefruit tones. They use Cascade and Columbus Hops.
