After many years of waiting, I finally got the opportunity to do something involving food and drink from a vantage point high up in The Shard - official reigning champion for the 'most Mordor looking building in London awardâ (disclaimer: this competition does not exist). The event was another part of Rum Experience Week, organised by the rum ambassador Ian Burrell (thatâs him looking dapper in the hat), and was held at Campariâs headquarters on the 27th floor. Unfortunately, as it was night, and the lighting in the building was turned up something fierce, you couldnât really see out into the city too well (way too much in the way of reflections - turn the lights off pls thx). So no amazing cityscape views - just amazing rumâ¦views. Views of rum. Which is OK.
Anyway, I say this tasting was held in The Shard, but in reality, as a 'twitter tastingâ, the event was more or less held wherever people were 'listening inâ (is that the right term for following a hashtag?). Appleton Estate had been giving away in the month or so leading up to the event, and so people as far away as Sweden were getting involved as Appleton Estateâs senior blender, David Morrison, took listeners through four of Appletonâs main range (thatâs him in the black jumper near Ian / often holding the mic). In order, this range was The Appleton Signature Blend, The Appleton Rare Blend (12 year), and The Appleton 21. My personal preference? The 12. And at £25ish a bottle, by my whisky-calibrated price standards, that seems pretty resonable.
As you can also see in the pictures, some of the UKâs most promising bartenders showed up for a little competition involving cocktails made out of Appleton Estate. I canât remember who won but I do remember that the level of audience appreciation/enthusiasm was⦠worthy of the talent on display behind the bar. It was also great to hear the story of each cocktail. The Welsh guyâs cocktail was supposedly inspired by being mugged he once experienced?!...
More about the folks involved. David had flown all the way over from the Nassau Valley, Jamaica, to endure dark, grey English weather in the exchange for the chance to presumably educate English people about the joys of extremely strong rum - and share out some of Appletonâs 50 year Jamaica Independence bottling (of which I got to try a glass, fuuuuuuuuck me son). I am still a rum padawan, and likely will be for some time - but some mind expanding, palette expanding, waistline expanding discoveries have been made, and Iâll be sure to pay more attention to Appleton Estate and all the nice things that they seem to get up to on that bloody great sugarcane farm of theirs. Well done, guys!

Burnie Bowmen field day - I went along to see what it involves - 29 targets spread over a 2.5 km, range shooting uphill and downhill and occasionally level areas ranging from about 30 metres to 60 - if i remember all the info correctly .
Quite a strenuous workout up and down the hills - 3 times - once to set up the range, once to shoot it and again to clear it at end of the event. If I start field archery Alenka will have her wish - getting me to walk more.
After my little accident involving a broken wrist joint out the gate, I restored some functionality to the figure and did a photoshoot. Still waiting for a response from Mondo, though I don't think it should be an issues getting things restored from their end.
So taking away the various Teela specific QC issues, what do we have? A pretty typical Mondo product - I like the overall sculpting job better than She Ran, which to be fair was their first female MOTU release. Definitely a much better shelf presence, and unlike She Ra, Teela actually attended Arm day. Of the three sculpts, the 200X is probably the best, though arguably speaking the only one that's not so great is the angry expression, which still works f you have the right conditions.
Great work out the outfit itself. It's no more or less complicated than She Ra, I'd say, but I think it's probably more accurate to say the complication is all focused on the chest and arms. It's unfortunate that it appears that Teela does, for pretty much all her incarnations she really does wear boots that stop short of the knee, which is unfortunate as a higher boot could have really blocked those knees from view.
Similarly, some beautiful sculpting work was applied to the accessories.
Articulation wise, well, it's not a Hot Toy True Type body. By American figure standards, it's not too bad. Butterfly joints would probably too much of an ask, so I'd settle for at least better than a simple 90 degree elbow bend - this isn't the 1980's anymore. Between the choice of materials and built in articulation, at least I was able to get Teela to sit in a chair.
Paint work is an area that I feel was improved over She Ra. Ever so slightly. For starters, I didn't have any issues with lip stick on the wrong side of her face. Everything sees to be in place, relatively clean work and all. Skin tone matching is still an issue, though. There's the body and the unpainted joints, which is tolerable if you don't stare too hard. But there's a disrepency between the faces and the body, and on the non 200X heads, the red around the eyes is too strong. But again, all things considered and the source, it's not too bad.
Build Quality wise... I'm not even going to start. Widely documented all around. I will just add that the heads are a pain in the ass to get back on the ball joint, and pretty much all her accessories are warped, with the exception of the Sword/Sheath and the Shield - I'll even give credit to the Snake staff, as it's warped by nature and I can't actually tell. The Snake helmet thing is warped to one side, and you see very easily that the Spear is warped.

The EXPEDITION Project 2012 is our foundation year. It will involve a dedicated team travelling around the entire South African border in 365 days. The team will be stopping over in 200 towns with the aim of establishing projects for 2013 onwards. Crazy? Yes, probably. Ambitious? Yes, definitely. Achievable? Absolutely.
The EXPEDITION Project is not simply an expedition, or a journey. It certainly isn’t a one off feel-good campaign or adventure trip. It also isn’t a green washing CSI project The EXPEDITION Project is a voice, a vehicle of transformation and change for the people to join any time they want. In short it is taking the form of annual expeditions but it is so much more than that. We want to be the eyes, ears and voice of a nation and hopefully one day a world. Teams will be evaluating, establishing, and initiating projects and finding suitable partners for such projects in the form of government and private sectors. The EXPEDITION project is not trying to be everything for everyone or spreading itself too thin, it is quite simply taking the form of an observer and then producing solutions, practical visions, and sustainable options. For at the heart of it, it is about you and I and the world we live in.
