RAND plastic toy camera (Diana clone) from the 1960s, I have no clue as to where or when this cheap plastic camera came to me, was great fun using it, and was pleasantly surprised by how the photos came out.

A monochrome tonally inverted image of Comet NEOWISE, captured on 21st July, with a Fuji X-T2, 100-400mm (@100mm fl), 15x 60 secs, ISO800. This results in a 16 degree field of view. Notice how the dust tail has fanned out and the total length of the ion tail exceeds the FOV.

What on earth is this? For one thing, it's not on earth! Today's sunspots, processed to highlight the crazy inferno of the chromosphere. The Chromosphere is a 1200 mile thick layer of fusing hydrogen just above the sun's surface. With my telescope rigged to capture only the light emitted by ionized hydrogen, I'm often surprised by the amazing patterns that emerge as I sharpen and adjust the contrast. Inverted, the spots which appear black through the sort of filter you might use to view an eclipse, appear white here.

This uncropped inverted color image of Comet Comet near M3 was taken with a Fujifilm X-T3, Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 @ f/5.6, iso 3200, exp 80x60s. Post-processed in PixInsight and Photoshop. Taken between 3:12AM and 5:29AM under very thin broken cirrus clouds and some wind. Trailing stars (comet was fixed) were dimmed using PixInsight. The comet's tail can be tracved out to 4 degrees from the nucleus.

Of note: Attempts taking 120 second exposures proved useless due to the comet's relative rapid motion. In the coming days, I'll be forced to take ~30s exposures with higher iso.

In addition to all the butterflies and bees, the sunflowers attract a lot of Goldfinches :-) I've learned to identify them by their call!

>>> Music: "Blue" by r.e.m. [despite the title -- I was listening to this song on loop. Another engaging, expansive, moving, strange collaboration between r.e.m./Michael Stipe and Patti Smith with sonic implosions in various wavelengths, a beautiful, resonant landscape.]

"I like you, love you, every coast of you.

I've seen your eddies and tides and hurricanes and cyclones.

Low ebb tide and high, full moon.

Up close and distant.

I read you.

Look, the sky, the sea, the ocean, the sun, the moon.

Blue, blue, blue, blue, blue, blue, blue blue, blue, blue, blue, blue ..."

~ Michael Stipe
