I digitally painted a photo that I originally shot back during Hurricane Sandy on Atlantic Beach today. I've piddled around with painting before, but today I put the mouse away, busted out the Wacom and actually finished one.

I visited the area around Northumbria University around xmas to do some Long Exposures. Not long after shooting this i was apprehended by 2 jobsworth security guards and asked to leave lol.

Shot info : Sigma 17-70 f2.8- f4, Hoya NDX400

Processing : After doing some perspective correction on the original RAW file I created an Overlay Layer with 50% Grey then used a technique which is a non destructive way of dodging and burning. I made a selection of the right hand building to seperate it then painted the rest of the scene with a black brush set to approx 35% Opacity to darken the sky and left hand building.

To tidy up the selection on the right hand building which had a very fine halo along the top and side i used the Clone Tool at 800% to remove it. To do all of this i used my Wacom Intuos 5 Pen Tablet which i bought in November. At first i hated using it but am starting to get the hang of it now and its yielding some great results especially with the cloning/selections ive used.

Big thanks to Julia Anna Gospodarou, Stefanie Loges & Paul Appleby for the tips :)

It takes a lot to get us excited here at Jeremy Hammons Photography. Getting a new L lens or a new 2013 mustang usually gets us pretty amped....So you can imagine how getting in a fresh shipment of Wacom Intuos 5 pen nibs makes us feel!!!!

Take a look at my & my blog for before & after photos

Routines are boring,

Especially of a morning.

Tea or toast?

I prefer orange juice the most.

A shower or bath?

I’m too tired to laugh.

Off to work or back to bed?

If only there were two devils at the side of my head...

Basically, the concept here relates to routine boredom. I'm not a particularly bad 'morning person' but it does take me a while to get going.

I seem to be missing energy lately, no matter how much I eat or sleep!

So tomorrow morning, it'll be morning tea, some form of breakfast (if I can manage to cook something) and a cold shower! Until I can magically be full of energy and happiness every morning I wake.

I'm going to start doing more digital portraits again. They're fun, quick-paced and I can shower them with meticulous, spontaneous detail.

I just spent the last few hours re-reading one of my favourite comic books of all time: Blankets. For those of you who read these descriptions, but don't know what Blankets is about, you're missing out. It's a beautifully-crafted memoir of adolescence through the eyes of a young child brought up as a fundamentalist Christian. From an artistic standpoint, I've come to appreciate Thompson's work even more than when I first bought the book a few years ago. His lines are fluid and as expressive as anything I've seen in ink painting. His thought bubbles, font choices (mostly hand-written, but still consciously selected) and verbiage are all dripping with a strange, aching effervescence. The book is pure beauty, made even better by the fact that it tells a story many can either relate to or empathize with.

Questioning God has been a matter of concern for me since halfway through elementary school and I'm still not 100% sure where I stand on it. I know I couldn't disagree more with fundamentalists from any major world religion, but at the same time, spirituality is something that interests me. Blankets is all about this. It interests me because I know that when (if) I grow old, I'll want to know there was a point to my life. Everyone can understand wanting remembrance. And the existence or non-existence of God in the face of eternity heavily weighs in on this.

For a while now, I've been battling the nihilism that has congealed as a result of the so-called "post-modern," line of thinking our generation has espoused. I haven't beaten it yet. A part of me still believes that we're only here for a small amount of time and that once that time frame is over, that's it. There is only life, death and the brief interim in between where we must try and make as big a dent in the lives of the other transitory figures that populate our so-called lives. It's depressing. How ephemeral we are.

But I think Thompson summed his view on the matter up nicely. By the end of his memoir, he has overcome the hurdle of fundamentalism. Though he still believes in the teachings of Jesus and the majority of Christianity, he understands the cultural roadblocks and ego-death of dogma. He has gotten over his first love. These facets of his life, and his life as a whole he realizes, are as fleeting as frost.

And yet, he comes to this poetic and beautifully realized conclusion:

"Sometimes, upon waking,

The residual dream can be more appealing than reality.

For a while, you feel like a ghost

Not fully materialized and unable to manipulate your surroundings.

Or else, it is a dream that haunts you. You wait with the promise of your next dream.

But the act of waking is dependent upon remembering.

We use ritual as a mnemonic device,

Holiday as a ritual with meaning,

And the seasons as increments of measurement.

How satisfying it is to leave a mark on a blank surface.

To make a map of my movement.

No matter how temporary."

The young man's introspective expression suggests he is deeply immersed in self-reflection, pondering personal matters or engaging in internal dialogue. The color grading scheme and dramatic lighting further emphasize the pensive and serious mood, inviting the viewer to wonder about the complex inner world and unspoken feelings behind his thoughtful eyes.

Quite surprisingly, and to my big disappointment, the least enjoyable experience from my recent trip to New York was the one I was most excited about; observation deck at the Empire State Building.

Forget about romantic Hollywood depictions of the Empire State Building. Forget about Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr from 'An Affair to Remember' or Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan from 'Sleepless in Seattle'. Forget about kind attendants who let Tom stay on the deck after they closed already. In fact, forget all King Kong movies too.

Whole experience of getting to the top of the building and the observation deck itself was stuff of nightmares. Endless triple-S queues at the ticket box. Unbelievably tight, airport class security inclusive of x-ray machines, metal detectors and pat-downs. Quite unpolitely, my entire camera bag was disassembled and all of its contents spread all over the table. They removed pretty much everything from it which had any metal in it inclusive of my tripod, baby tripod, filter mount plus adapter rings, tiny screwdriver and few other items. By the time I got to the top, I had nothing but my camera on me with 2 lenses. Nothing to stablize it with for long exposures. I was angry and disappointed. Exposure bracketing was going to be a major challenge to say the least. But that was just the beginning of that afternoon.

Once I got on the platform, it was like being at the train station at the rush hour on Monday. Screaming kids. Selfie-obsessed teens taking 100 shots in a row with that stupid selfie-stick. They would not move from the spot! Swarms of tourists and security guards moving them around like sheep.

There's a tall metal fence all around the platform which makes it impossible to get a clean shot unless you push your camera through one of its weird openings and placed onto a concrete ledge. Once the camera is through, you can't really bring your face close to the camera and that makes it awfully difficult to focus or properly operate its dials and buttons. On top of that, I kept getting pushed around by the masses of unruly tourist who were snapping the shots over my head, under my armpits and in between my legs. It was insane.

I started snapping at 5:30 pm and darker it got, more people were coming. It was PACKED! Every spot at the fence was taken and I knew I had to stay where I was. If I moved, I'd lose it and with it, my single chance to capture this panorama. So I waited for the perfect light at the same spot for one full hour while getting kicked in the ribs about 20 times. It was great.

When the blue hour kicked in, I set my camera to shoot only 3, instead of usual 5 bracketed exposures. I didn't have my Promote Remote Control for the job so I set my camera on a self-timer, programmed to shoot with the built-in bracketing from -3EV to +3EV. No tripod meant I had to improvise by pressing the camera against the concrete ledge with full force, using my entire body weight. That -almost- worked. While I was doing my last bracketed frame, I got kicked by a tourist beside me and that caused the camera to move a bit...the shot was ruined, so was the whole panorama. I had to re-shoot it three times before I got the clean, sharp series.

tech: 3 horizontal frames, each blended with 3 bracketed exposures. I used Canon 5d Mk3 with Canon 24-105mm lens, set at 100mm / f7.1.

Software: Lightroom 4.4, Photoshop 5.1, Photoshop CC, Nik Software plugins, Topaz plugins.

A friend wanted me to take some pictures of his Lotus Exige. I jumped at the chance as I'd always wanted to photograph the car. Night time offered a great opportunity for me to not only shoot this awesome car, but also to try out my Zebralight SC600 LED torch. The car was 'painted with light' using the Zebralight torch and a wireless shutter release. A few different exposures were taken and the best bits of each were then blended together and edited to create the final image you see here. I spent a good 5-6 hours with the Wacom tablet removing blemishes and imperfections in the car. I printed this and the other image I took of the car on metallic paper for him. I was very proud of the end result and he was extremely happy with the images. I'm hopefully going to be doing another shoot of this car in the daylight. Watch this space!

16/07/2012 - update - as per some comments below, it has been brought to my attention that the image has a tint to it. As such I have corrected this and re-uploaded the image sans tint. :)

Ayer aprendí a utilizar mi tableta gráfica y empecé a hacer este dibujo para probar ^-^ Me he quedado muy satisfecha con el resultado porque no esperaba que me saliera así XD Espero que os guste ♥

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

Yesterday I learn how to use my grphic tablet, so I decided to make this drawing for try ^-^ I really like the result and I hope you like it too! ♥

When you have time, a few post-it notes, and Photoshop.

I am new to PS: made use of a terrific deal for which I got an Intuos4 pen tablet and Photoshop CS5 (through a bundled software upgrade) all for less than the regular price of PS alone The offer is through Wacom (the tablet maker): www.wacom.com/intuos/bonus-software.php

I'm fidning the tablet is great for general computer work and is godsend for doing brushwork/touch-ups on photos (my wrist is much happier!)

But, just in case you're wondering, this is one picture rotated and flipped 4 times. No other manipulation

My current workspace.

Decided that I needed to clean, and clean I did. Moved all of my external hard drives to underneath the desk, along with the Wacom Intuos 9x12 when it's not in use. Got rid of the Magic Mouse and MX Revolution I had, removed the mousepad and replaced it with a Logitech Performance Mouse MX for use on the glass.

After doing some Columbo style investigating on Friday night and Saturday morning about what height the tide had to be to breach the WW2 Tank Defence Blocks at Blyth i just knew Saturday at 3.30 was the time i had to be there! It was high tide then which coincided with the golden hour but as i was about to break the news to Wifey it started snowing :[ Now i wasnt gonna get another chance as other high tides were pretty much after sunrise in the coming days then after that they dip below 5 metres so not to be defeated i broke the news, got a few frowns then it was on. We would go together as Claire was worried i'd be swept away lol.

Upon arriving the sky was just awesome! Massive big storm clouds, rain on the horizon or water being carried across the sea, rainbows to the North, the sky lighting up to the West... i didnt know where to look :O As we ran over the grass towards the promenade i noticed the brilliant clouds above the Beach Huts so fired off a few iPhone shots before running to the beach in anticipation...

Would the blocks be in the seas grasp or would they be high and dry??

Woohoo, the sea was raging with wave after wave crashing around them much to my joy but to Claires dismay :D I ran down through the dunes to the short stretch between the Southern most Groynes to blocks that arent even on Flash Earth and got set up.

I had a vision, very long exposures with flat milky water... well after my first shot i realised this just was not gonna happen! The sea was relentless, i was up to my knees and poor Eric was taking a battering. (Erics my tripod) :P

I had mounted my Hoya 6 Stop Filter on the 10-20 before hand as you can still compose with it on then i was adding my Hoya NDX400 which is nearly 9 stops so was getting around 4 minute exposures. With sea like this that was just impossible! I had plunged the tripod feet well into the sand but you heard crack after crack as rocks clattered the legs over and over. I tried many different shots but in the end had to dump the darker ND and go for some wooshery action and oh was there some wooshery going on :D I captured some shots at that section then moved on to the blocks i had originally came to shoot. There must be about 20 stretched out between the last groyne and the broken poo pipe. (People whove been will think that sounds normal lol)

Anyway upon getting in position it became clear that as with the first set of blocks the tide was too lairy and maybe a bit too high... By now Claire was shaking badly with the cold so i cracked on and got some more wooshery shots after trying a few more long exposures (which are all crap).

This one seemed to jump out in Adobe Bridge so after converting to mono in Silver Efex Pro 2 here it is :)

Have to say that these were the best conditions ive seen, if not very good for your camera gear! Mother Nature in its rawest form :O

Special mention to Claire for being understanding and also tagging along... she was frozen to the bone when we got back to the car but i have to mention one of the funniest things ive seen! Upon agrreing to wrap in i unscrewed my Hoya filter and opened the box but the bloody foam disc flew out onto the dunes past her. She chased after it and every time she went to grab it it flew off again which had me pissing my self... Eventually she caught it after it somehow got impaled on a twig lol

Atleast it warmed her up a bit lol

If you guys have ~~Anita~~ on your Friends List check out her awesome woosh shot from just South of these blocks on the same day, infact probably within the same hour :)
