Here we are. This is my first big job on a portrait, using all the different technics I had learnt : dodge and burn, frequency separation, Hue and Saturation, Noise, Highlights, Shadows, playing and making a dedicated background with a DIY vignetting.

Feel free to comment please, from bad to good comments, I would appreciate it !

It's been quite some time ago since I last photographed a seascape - I'm much more into architectural photography lately. But the days with heavy fog recently gave me a reason to go back to the water again and shoot an often photographed and classic subject in the fog. Besides that, I needed some practice for the workshop I'm teaching in December:)

The introduction of the Archiscapes theme: where architecture meets the sea or where structures in the sea look like architecture. Thanks Sandra Canning !

I finally got myself one of these a few months ago and although I haven't used it a great deal, it's really fun to use. I find the brush in PS to be so much more accurate using it. Once I'm more used to using it I will probably struggle without it!

I was tagged. Gee, thanks, Dan. You sure made my day. Sigh.

I'm gonna type some random crap now. You can read it if you want.

1) This is a screenshot of my digital workstation. I use FireAlpaca because I'm a freaking weeb. My tablet is a (now outdated) Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch (size small).

2) I took a few minutes to sketch up a shitty Joker and Riddler just for you guys! The Riddler is clearly on cocaine and I think the Joker lowkey looks like Jacksfilms. Jokesfilms (end me).

3) My real name is Evan.

4) My Instagram is @Volkswagginbeetle if you're interested. It's sort of an art portfolio. I could use some more followers as traction.

5) My Twitter is @911Bug911, but you might want to stay away from that one for your own sanity.

6) My family just tried to commission me to make a Donald Trump coloring book. Thoughts?

7) The "real" me doesn't have any online profiles. Deal with it, stalkers.

8) I've nearly watched 600 episodes of anime (includes movies and OVAs). If you're wondering why I sold my soul to Japan, you can thank my good friend Kaylee and her strange obsession with lolis and hentai. She talked me into watching an anime and it all went downhill from there. What's even scarier is that this all happened toward the end of last year. 600. Damn it Japan, give me my life back.

9) It is Wednesday, my dudes. Ahhhhhhhhhhh!

10) My greatest accomplishment in life was probably drawing Batman and Superman having buttsex. "Do you bleed? You will."

11) Let's agree to forget about that last one.

12) Dan asked me to put my dick size as one of these. I don't own anything that measures in millimeters, though.

13) Let's agree to forget about that one, too.

14) I'm single. By choice. But if you're female, you can still hit me up. Jussayin.

15) If I ever manage to release my stuff for the MCSG on a schedule, I have plans for another series on top of Spider-Man. Yay for glorified fanfiction!

16) I have a nice camera and love to take photos. Yet I never post any to this photo sharing site. Strange.

17) Unless Chris is a stud, I'm definitely the sexiest guy in the DCSG/MCSG Skype group. Jussayin, ladies. Jussayin.

18) Civil War was a 5/5 for me. There were parts that could've been improved, but that's only natural. Can't wait for more of Tom as Spidey!

19) I think about the sweet release of death on a daily basis. Just kidding, it's only biweekly.

20) You can FM me any time if you ever want my Skype.

21) I was only going to do 20 of these, but I never mentioned our Lord and Savior Eddie Brock. Praise him.

Took a short trip to scout for a future shoot. Installed the Wacom Intuos Pro tablet and tried to use that. Was quite something, I will need a lot of practise I think :-)

Not entirely sure when I'll be able to use this location for a shoot, but now would be a great time as there were hardly any water in the river, lots of really nice places to shoot in very small area. Hope I can use it this Saturday when I have a shoot planned with a new model that lives quite near me.

Processing: Lightroom 5 | Photoshop CS6 | Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.

The Elicium is the most recent addition to the Amsterdam RAI, the largest conference center in Europe. Designed by local architectural firm Benthem Crouwel Architects, this multifunctional edifice consists of an enormous ballroom -suitable for large-scale events, several conference rooms, and a number of meeting rooms, being different functions housed in separate parts of the building. The interesting internal zonal structure of the Elicium translates to the exterior faƧade in the form of steel-panel coated extruded curves that seem to break through the otherwise continuous curtain wall, creating an undulating surface that wraps differentiated spaces with every fold.

In creating this image, I wanted to emphasize this cross-sectional approach to designing the faƧade of the building. To this end I had three elements to deal with: the sky, the building itself, and that curved, protruding element, which I ranked in a sort of hierarchy that would determine the basic tonal relationships among them. Accordingly, the sky would cover tonal zones 1 to 5, the curtain glass would not go beyond zone 8, and zones 9 and 10 would be exclusively used to highlight the silver molding on the faƧade of the Elicium.

Now you might be wondering whether my final image has anything to do with what I captured on my camera a few months ago in Amsterdam. Well, probably not much. However, this is very close to what I envisioned while I was walking around the newly developed Zuidas district for the first time. This is why I stopped to photograph this building. And more importantly, this is why I like it.

On a side note, this is the first image in which I have successfully incorporated some of the post-processing techniques developed by Dutch black and white fine art photographer Joel Tjintjelaar. In case you are interested, he recently released a highly recommendable series of video tutorials as part of a more comprehensive black and white long exposure masterclass where he provides step by step explanations on the different parts of his photographic workflow.

This is an old shot taken with my Nikon D850 and a Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 DI II VC HLD ASP-C lens.

So I finally started editing with my MacBook Pro 13ā€, and a Wacom Intuos Pro Medium that I’ve had sitting around for a couple of years both collecting dust.

I found a set of 7 images taken using a tripod. All were long exposures that had their own appealing sections of different waves in the scene. When I took these images I knew they’d come in handy one day.

I knew I’d need these as well as other sequences of panorama shots, focus stacked shots, and bracketed exposures in order to learn how to stack and blend them together using layer masks and other tools available in Photoshop.

Almost all my edits up until last night have been performed on my iPad Pro 11ā€ So after watching lots of hours of tutorials I felt it was time to change the game. I know there’s gonna be a lot of trial and error, and a big learning curve using the Wacom Intuos Pro but becoming a better Photographer is going to require learning how to use the newest tools available.

This shot represents my first edited shot round tripping in Lightroom Classic & Photoshop. I used Layer masks in Photoshop, and a little more touching up in Camera Raw, then back into Lightroom Classic for cataloging purposes.

Update: December 4h. (2023)

This coming spring of 2024 will mark my 5th year using Adobe Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, and my Wacom tablet.

Since I’ve been using Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and my Wacom tablet it really has changed editing and made a huge difference in the way I now edit my photos. It enables you to edit your images in ways that make so much more sense.

It does take time to learn, but the results will make you very satisfied and proud of your finished photos.

Bottom line is, I highly recommend making an effort to take the time to learn as much as you can post processing your images.

'West Wing'

There aren't many places in this world where an interior of a building could be so overbearingly imposing in terms of scale and luxury to make its visitors feel small and insignificant. Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi is one of those buildings.

Featured in this capture is the West residential wing at this uber-posh hotel.

This is a 3-frame vertorama, captured with Canon's epic TS-E 17mm lens. Camera was positioned horizontally. To capture this panorama, I decided to shift the movement of lens from one extreme to the other extreme in vertical direction, capturing 5 bracketed exposures (from -2ev to +2ev) for each of the 3 shifted positions.

I ended up with a total of 15 captures, tonemapped with Oloneo PhotoEngine.

I've done quite a bit of light re-shaping in the post processing stage as HDR processed image tend to appear flat, especially in interior scenes with artificial lighting. Flat images...suck. With some luminance masking and colour grading, I managed to create depth, softness and mood in the scene which spoke more intimately to my aesthetics.

'Emirates Palace - The Crown Jewel of Abu Dhabi II'

I took this photograph on 1st May 2013. I believe it was the last day with dramatic clouds of this year. It'll take at least 5 months before we see a sky like this again.

My aim was to produce an impressionistic rendition of the stunningly beautiful sunset. I wanted to capture a full range of colours and tones while drawing the eyes to the center of the image. That turned out to be a challenge I did not anticipate.

After the initial HDR tone mapping test, I felt that the sky looked too aggressive and too static. It was drawing attention onto itself and away from the hotel. Imposing palm trees in the foreground weren't helping either.

I decided to work on a trick that works every time; by adding a touch of motion to the clouds, I managed to separate the background from the foreground while re-directing the eye back to the middle of the screen.

To achieve this effect, I used a combination of 2 techniques: 5-stop HDR photography which produced a base image, combined with Dynamic Blending in which select areas of the image received colour correction as well as dodging & burning corrections. Most of the time however was spent hand painting the mask which needed to separate the cloudy sky from the rest of the image with high precision. Once completed, this mask was used to control the motion blur on the sky only, without affecting the building or the leaves of the palm trees.

I also spent a fair amount of time cloning out several people on the steps of the hotel because they got smudged during the HDR tone mapping process. Less in the frame is more.

All of the usual suspect were used in the post-processing stages: LR 4.4, Photoshop CS 5.1 and Viveza 2 + Color Efex Pro 4. I used Wacom Intuos 3 with pressure sensitive pen to work on this image. You couldn't a mouse on this kind of a job.

Camera was Canon 5D Mk2 and Canon TS-E 17mm f4.0L. I used Promote Remote Control for HDR bracketing.
