2011.01.01 | Silent Wood Place

A few months ago, I bought Grace, an Apple iMac, but never posted an updated desk photo. However, after an impromptu Geek Night™ at lefthandrob's — which included Grace going to Hagerstown — I decided a photo was in order after the desk reconstruction.

2011 will be the Year of Learning for me, with plans to begin my college career — at 31 years old — commencing in the Fall semester. Beyond that, I have plenty of Algebra II, English, Japanese, photography post, and C/Objective-C to study over the next few months. Having an open and clean workspace will be of great value to me going forward.

Desk

The desk itself is comprised of two birch VIKA ARTUR trestles and a frosted glass VIKA GLASHOLM table top. The lighting underneath is created by four LAGRA spotlights. A MARKUS swivel chair rounds out the IKEA hardware.

A 4x6 photo of whilowhisper and I at Northwestern University — visiting her sister — sits framed on the left of the desk.

I finally got around to trying an attempt of cleaning up the HVAC power cable. It's a tad cleaner than before.

This idea for this one was really the colour. I'm still not entirely satisfied with it but it will do for now. For those of you interested in technique, the background was gouache and the red craft was drawn with a Wacom Intuos tablet.

'Libertas'

The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World; French: La Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in the middle of New York Harbor, in Manhattan, New York City. The statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, an Italian-French sculptor, and dedicated on October 28, 1886, was a gift to the United States from the people of France. The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States: a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad.

Captured handheld from a moving boat with Canon 5DMK3 and Canon 70-300mm lens. The rest happened in my imagination.

Processed with Lightroom 4.4, Photoshop 5.1 & CC, Nik Software suite of plugins. I used Wacom Intuos 3 tablet & HP portable workstation running Windows 7 x64

Bsharri

Bsharri is a town at an altitude of about 1,500 m (4,900 ft) in the Kadisha Valley in northern Lebanon. It is located in the Bsharri District of the North Governorate.

Bsharri is the town of the only remaining (preserved) Original Cedars of Lebanon (Cedrus libani), and is the birthplace of the famous poet, painter and sculptor Khalil Gibran who now has a museum in the town to honor him.

Thoughts:

One glance from this overlook was enough to inspire a high-resolution panorama.

This scene had all the makings of a classic winter landscape capture; dazzling range of textures, vibrant pastels of the town which were partially blanketed by the frosty layers of snow. I had all the ingredients. All I needed was the perfect moment to stop the time.

Just when I grew impatient, low winter sun lit a fiery crown atop the mountain peaks. And there it was.

Tech Talk:

Canon 5D Mark III + Canon 70-300 f4-5.6L IS USM. Promote Remote Control was used for 7-stop bracketed exposures in 4 separate groups for a total of 28 captures.

Photoshop CC + Wacom Intuos 3 graphic tablet were used to paint luminance masks and for Dynamic Blending.

Certain details were lifted with Viveza 2 local toner. Photoshop's RGB curves with layer masks were used to control the final look of the image.

An old shot I took with my former Fuji XE-2 (I sold it for the Sony A7R2).

Processing : I worked on this shot to test my new skills to see what result I could do to approach a cartoon style picture. The quality is bad (high ISO here) but I am quite ahppy with the result.

Processing :

Eyes work, Doge & Burn, Color search, VSCO Agfa 800+tweaks, vignettes, grain.

The Tiny Ones : Nikon D7000, Nikkor 35mm f/2 nonAi, extension tubes, SB28, diffuser and reflector, Helicon Focus (focus stacking), CS5, Wacom Intuos

+ the shot above is composed of about more than 10 frames since at this macro level, the focus is very thin, so focus stacking is needed

+ edtied in CS5 but no cropping

Long Exposure shot of the Children's Pool in La Jolla, California.

Different from my usual work and less minimalistic. Especially in the interpretation of the water and the sky.

I have several versions of this processed in Silver Efex Pro 1 (they can be found on the preview version of my website, check my profile for info on my website) but this one's processed in Silver Efex Pro 2. Much more control and subtlety in toning besides the other new features...

I'm in the process of switching from using Microsoft Windows and I'm headed to Apple land... We have replaced our over four year old HP nc8320 laptop, and will be replacing our desktop in the coming months (waiting for Apple to update the Mac Pro).

I've used Microsoft product since MS-DOS 3.3, and have been a career IT person for over fifteen years (mostly as a server systems engineer designing mostly Microsoft systems), and while I will continue to keep up on MSFT stuff and continue to use them for the technology side of my work life, at home... I'm pretty much finished with Microsoft. While OS-X has some issues, it's a far nicer system to use (all the power of UNIX with the best UI I've ever seen) especially if you want to do photo or video editing.

Gear in the Frame:

Apple 15" MacBook Pro

Core i5 2.4Ghz. CPU (not worth spending the $$ on the Core i7, especially when this won't be my primary editing machine and especially when $300 only buys me 10% more performance)

4GB of RAM (going to 8GB pretty quick)

500GB 7200RPM Segate Momentus XT Hard Drive (this is a great drive that comes with a 4GB SSD cache)

High Res Screen (but not the Anti-Glare screen, clients love looking at images on the glossy screen)

G-Tech G Drive mini 500GB Hard Drive

Wacom Intuos 3 4" x 6" Tablet

Gretagmacbeth Eye-One Display 2 Colorimeter

Calumet UDMA Firewire CF Reader

Apple Magic Mouse

Garmin eTrex Summit HC

Software:

OS-X 10.6.4

Windows 7 Ultimate (running inside of VMWare Fusion)

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Adobe CS5 Design Extended

RoboGeo (Run under Windows 7 for geotagging)

I'm going through my 2009 images (about 5000 of them) and trying to get rid of the junk. This one caught my eye and I thought I'd put my Intuos tablet through some motions for a change.

Four exposures combined in Photoshop and adjusted for contrast. First one is the rocks and nearest bit of sea in the foreground. Second is the main body of water, taken with even smaller aperture to get additional exposure time. Third is the sky, and I blended in a fourth, very dark exposure in just the brightest part of the sky to avoid overexposure there.

A bit oversaturated but... so what?

Its been awhile ! Finally got the computer to running better, was reviewing some of the stored photo's on one of the hard drive from Windows days, Well in my mind I had already created this composed / imaginative created moment. so with the day as is my projected intention / attention. gets postponed. Play day ! about three hours worth No commercials !!

Hiking under the lower Emerald Pool Falls. This is a view from under the ledge you can see in my other shot.

I saved this one for a while due to the difficultly of processing it. It took some really detailed masking work due to the extreme dynamic range of the light. The HDR process does not like the dark waving trees in the foreground. Luckily I got a Wacom Intuos Pen Tablet for Christmas. That made the process more enjoyable and less stressful on my wrist. I highly recommend one if you do detailed masking work.
