KRUGER NATIONAL PARK is one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It covers an area of 19,485 km2 in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeastern South Africa, and extends 360 km from north to south and 65 km from east to west. The administrative headquarters are in Skukuza. Areas of the park were first protected by the government of the South African Republic in 1898, and it became South Africa's first national park in 1926. To the west and south of the Kruger National Park are the two South African provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In the north is Zimbabwe, and to the east is Mozambique. It is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a peace park that links Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and with the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. The park is part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere an area designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve (the "Biosphere"). A diversion from recent landscapes but a similar intimate feel to my last post, this lovely hibiscus is in my garden. I've been wanting to photographh it for years but there's always something else to do, especially around the old homestead and it's surprising how quickly the blooms fade. What's also surprising is how difficult it is to get a decent shot (for me anyway). This year however, I got the best ones to date and I liked this example with a hint of evening light. (It also falls nicely into one of my themes - "A Moment of Light - In My Garden"). I did it with me longest lens (100-400mm + 1.4TC) to try to isolate the bloom and it's a short focus stack to get all of the central flower parts in focus.

Sorry for being behind on everyone's photostream...I got hit with an icky stomach bug...but should be catching up with you all soon!!
From around 4 months otter cubs accompany Mum on hunting expeditions & learn to fish. They stay with her for about a year, during which time contact is very close. At around 12 months, the family splits up and so begins her reproductive cycle again.
When I first saw this snake skin shed, I thought it was an eyeglass cord and walked on. On my hike back out of the canyon, I climbed down to the pool to pick it up, but seeing what it really was, I only took a picture. At home, I tried to identify the snake by its hexagonal scales, but couldn't find any direct links to any snakes I'm familiar with in Southeast Utah. Any herpetologists out there who might be able to shed some light?

Went mud hunting again yesterday and found some interesting slime as well. Nature has its own paintbrush and paint.
Another small scene off the beaten path in Yosemite National Park. I really love how the Redwood's roots are wrapped around the granite boulders (and have been for a while).
A juvenile Double-Crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) preens its feathers after hunting underwater. Cormorants lack hydrophobic oil on their feathers which help them swim better...however, it also makes them soaked and unable to fly well after fishing. Thus, they usually spend a decent amount of time after foraging to dry their wings and preen.
I had envisaged this image for weeks. When I finally found a cormorant that was busy preening, I took the opportunity to creep close and snap this intimate portrait.

A cloudless, uninspiring sky made me point the camera down, looking at the more intimate landscape encased in frost.
Dijkwater was a part of the stream that separated the islands Schouwen and Duiveland. When you walk for a while you are in a nature paradise.
