The branch-interlocked cypresses symbolize loyal love. It is said that Puyi and Wanrong, the last emperor and empress of the Qing dynasty, had their photograph taken in front of the trees after their wedding ceremony to show that “we wish to fly in heaven, two birds with one pair of wings, and to grow together on earth, two trees with branches interlaced.”
I finished this in January of 1984. It seems to have survived storage and the years fairly well. I painted it as close as I could to match the Redondo tower color at that time. I also crudely hand lettered the safety sign that was on the tower then, as well.
I don't know, who is the author, but I'm sure somebody is. The idea is very simple, the proportions of units are very convenient: a square can be cut into 6 units (rectangles 1:3, 1:2 and 1:1) without rest.

This is a view of the interlocking portion of the interlocking machine. Today junctions are still called interlockings, but this is the real reason. In the days before digital computers, this performed the same function It is in essence, an analog computer.There are tabs and notches on the bars that will not permit certain things to happen in combination thus averting disaster.
Note the "Armstrong" levers in the background. I have watched big men throw the whole body into moving them as they can pull hundreds (literally) of feet of pipe to move a switch or change a signal.

I made a white square and cut off the perimeter, which I saved.
I made a rectangle and coloured it. I placed the white square onto the background and coloured it in with the flood fill. I did this six times. On the seventh time, I left the square white. The next job was to repaint some of the overlapping portions so that what was the upper square, became the lower one, and gave the interlocking look. Adding a button border finished it off.

An eastbound train of CMO hoppers with UP leaders enters the TRRA Merchants Sub at the Grand Ave. Interlocking. Meanwhile, a crewless train of empty coal hoppers, led by an Executive SD70MAC, sits on a parallel TRRA track.
At the time this photo was taken, The Terminal Railroad was nearing completion of the project to install the third "High Speed Track 57", which is the track the westbound train with empty coal hoppers is sitting on.
I honestly don't quite understand how that project was executed. In this photo, it appears the new track is the northernmost of the three. But I also have photos taken from the other end (at 14th St), which show the southernmost track as the new track.
The Union Pacific Jefferson City Sub (double track) is in the foreground right.
To the very left is the double track MetroLink lite-rail system.
The levers that controlled the interlocking plant at AC Tower in Marion, Ohio, which was the crossing of the Pennsylvania Railroad, New York Central, Erie Lackawanna and Chesapeake & Ohio. A northbound Purlple Line Express is approaching Thorndale Interlocking and will cross over from Track 2 to 3 to 4. This interlocking is controlled by Thorndale Tower which is at the right with the Towerman working the panel.
