Listening Heads, 2006 - Interactive video portraiture.

In the film shoot for Listening Heads, Kentaro directed his friends to act as characters which he thought would represent the nature of his friends. For example one of the friends was instructed to act as a stockbroker in Manhattan. The character was chosen to bring him/her-ness in body language and expression. According the character's nature, a number of scenario was created. For example stockbroker on cocaine is trying to pretend he is straight. Then these facial expressions of various scenarios were captured at a photography studio on HD video.

In the interactive video installation, the software responds to sound through the microphone, and talking to the microphone would trigger these different facial expressions, created from this scenario based portrait shoot, at random.

The facial expression (response) that is triggered by the viewer's voice (word/sentence) would make sense as a response for most of the time. Viewers were left to interpret the facial expressions in ways which suited for whatever they said.

This complete disconnections of two communication scenarios, one at the studio and one at the installation site, brings attention to absurd nature of language and communication, and context in which art works exist.

*NOISA, the Network of Intelligent Sonic Agents*, is an interactive music system that monitors the performer’s actions and provides autonomous and non-intrusive counteractions. In this co-creative music performance, intelligent sonic agents are designed to support the music performance by

providing responses that encourage and maintain the communication and motivation of the performer with the *NOISA* system. The sonic agent is an entity in each *NOISA* instrument that

learns relationships between sonic agents, performer and musicscape. Each sonic agent has a machine-learning model for predicting and adapting its behavior during the performance. Regression

algorithms, which use a tree model to derive the predicted parameter value from decisions and branches, lead to predictable and representative behavior based on the learning data. The *NOISA* project elevates people’s creative thinking, engages them in investigation, and contributes in positive ways to the co-created arts with machine learning and AI.

Project by Myles Blasonato, James Brown and Michael Moretti. A challenge for these game designers was to develop an Audio-Only Game experience in which the player navigates the spatial virtual experience of a non-linear narrative blindfolded. The Wii controller is used to activate events, such as answering the phone, shooting, turning a door-handle and voice activation triggers other selections as the player chooses their own path through the branching structure of the adventure narrative. The player depends solely on her/his ears for sensations and directions. The sound design involves virtual spatial audio, foley/SFX, dialogue and binaural directional cues.

This project was developed in the Interactive Sound Studio 2008 University of Sydney.

Lewis and Clark Community College unveiled its interactive mural just in time for graduation. The design competition was won by Breanna Sak of Granite City. The mural will be on display outside The Commons until next spring, when a new design will replace it. The public is invited to interact with the mural by walking the dogs, blowing bubbles or resting on a park bench. Photos by Jan Dona, L&C Media Services.
