11 December 2024, Bangkok, Thailand - Jong-Jin Kim, Assistant Director-General and FAO Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific receives FAO Director-General QU Dongyu at the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific during an open house on the last night of the Director-Generals visit.

FAO Director-General QU Dongyu is in Thailand on a five-day visit. Early today he visited Thale Noi, Pattalung Province, he visited Non-hunting Area and the Ramsar Site of Kuan Ki Sian. Thale Noi Wetland is one of the 58 GIAHS systems in Asia and the Pacific region, it is home to more than 3 500 individuals. Selected on 04 November 2022, it is the first GIHAS site in Thailand. Its selection was based on its quality as a diversified farming system marked by longstanding interaction between humans and buffaloes. The selection criteria for GIAHS sites include global importance that is beneficial to the communities , agro-biodiversity, supports food and livelihood security, knowledge systems, social values and culture, as well as outstanding landscapes.

My diptych is a result of my attempt to capture the interaction between humans and nature. I set out to the Washington Park Arboretum with the hopes of catching a tree hugger or two, but what I found changed my expectations. Similar to Vito Acconci's "Blinks", I captured an image whenever I observed traces of human interaction with trees: this came in the form of carvings, litter, and even a repository for lost items. The image on top shows one of these carvings I found. The image on bottom shows a house key I found attached to a tree. I chose these images because I felt both captured my intent of highlighting the uniqueness of individual interactions with nature.

The fact that we live in a deep gravity well in a gas covered planet which goes around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and it still feels like another Tuesday proves the significance of perspective in our lives.

We believe that a right perspective can change our lives. TEDxGCEK, the youngest member of TED community plans to represent the same. TEDx speakers compel us to initiate, innovate and improvise the lives of people in ways that we never even knew existed.

The trophic interaction is of moss taking in sunlight and nutrients to create its own food since it's a primary producer. I think the most important species in my area is the Oak Tree. They are by far the most common tree at my site. They determine how much sunlight and rainfall enter the area since they make up the majority of the tree canopy at my site. They also affect carbon and oxygen levels at my site. If Oak trees were removed, there would be a huge shift at my site. Other species of trees would have to compete for spots in the canopy. Until other trees could fill the area, there would be a lot more sunlight and rain than the area would be used to which could be detrimental to some species. If an invasive species cam in there would be a lot of the same effects. It would make it very difficult for the many organisms that depend on the Oak trees for their habitat. The three organisms I chose to look at while reading the article were lichen, fern, and iris. The lichen is limited by access to sunlight. They have to grow in an area where they are not blocked by other ground plants. The fern is limited by nutrients from the ground and sunlight since they need these to do photosynthesis. This Iris is also a primary producer and is limited by sunlight and nutrients. My question for my site is how many species can be found on my 30X30 m plot of land and what does the food chain look like?

The Interaction of Color

"To open eyes" was art teacher Josef Albers' mission. Through research and experimentation, Albers discovered how colors relate to each other and how we perceive them. These are a few of the pages from his 1968 book The Interaction of Color. Some of the theories he developed were:

-Color physically effects our eyes.

-Some colors seem to change their appearance depending on what colors are near them.

-Some colors will saturate our eyes, so that colors appear to blend, vibrate, or even disappear.
