Grêmio is one of the local football (soccer) teams in Porto Alegre, Brazil. For over twenty years, they bragged to local rivals Inter that they had a world title: Grêmio beat Germany's Hamburg in 1983, becoming the only football world champion from the south of Brazil. This was their number one claim to fame: Grêmio supporters managed to add a reference to this world title in every discussion involving football, much like the English always bring up the 1966 World Cup. In 2006, however, local rivals Inter won the South American championship and qualified to the club World Cup held in Japan. There, they beat European champions Barcelona. At last, the other half of the state could also claim they too were "world champions".
