45 years ago, Mattel's Intellivision was introduced to compete with the Atari 2600. From 1979-1990, Mattel produced over 100 games, it's biggest seller being, "Astrosmash."
Intellivision became obsolete as newer and more advanced gaming consoles were developed with better graphics, sound and realism.
Now, it is just a nostalgic piece of video game history. But like your first car or your first love, it lives in the hearts of those lucky enough to have spent hours and hours of skillful entertainment.

This is a one-off piece, and a departure from usual Minimalism pieces of mine. This time I just wanted to go really, really basic. Initially, I felt I was creating a Bauhaus/De Stijl inspired piece, but after finishing it, I thought it also looked like the primitive graphics from Atari 2600 or Intellivision consoles.
I've put this one up as a t-shirt and poster too, in case anyone wants to buy them: www.mysoti.com/mysoti/designer/ashrb/product/947757/AshRB...

Awesome Dragons Lair cover! Dragons Lair was without question my top arcade game from this time period! Fifty cents a game was pretty steep back then, but I could not help myself! It took what, over a decade to get a 100% true home version?... Worth the wait! This issue is in Very-Fine-plus (8.5) condition.

The main console unit consists of a 14x8x2 inch rectangular plastic case that houses the motherboard, with a cartridge slot on the right side and connectors for the external power supply and RF jack at the rear. The controllers connect into plugs in a recessed area on the top of the unit.
The design of the controllers is similar to that of Mattel's Intellivision — the controller is rectangular and consists of a numeric keypad and a set of side buttons. In place of the circular control disc below the keypad, the Coleco controller has a short, 1.5-inch joystick. The keypad is designed to accept a thin plastic overlay that maps the keys for a particular game. Each ColecoVision console shipped with two controllers.
This entire 1982 gaming magazine is asking to be scanned, there's a whole section comparing all the systems (Atari, Intellivision, Odyssey2, Astrocade (?) and the nascent Colecovision.
Despite the ad copy, Vectrex was never on anyone's radar, although the concept of a portable vector-based system seems pretty cool in retrospect.
The extreme excitement portrayed by the people in this in ad borders on mania. However, it still has resonance, my 7 year old saw this ad and asked me why everyone was looking at each other and not the game. Good point.
Having way too much fun getting sidetracked by pixel art. Some ideas I threw together for an 8-bit game based on John Carpenter's The Thing (1982).
The game would loosely follow the narrative of the movie: each level has a it's own gameplay.
Level 1 is trying to shoot the dog running across through the snow (using the Astro Smash- style target mechanic).
Level 2 is attacking the Thing inside the dog kennel with the flame thrower before it can attack the NPCs.
Level 3 you play as the thing, creeping around Outpost 31, waiting for the right conditions to attack and assimilate a host. The host must be alone: once you make contact it triggers the infection phase, and a timer counts down. If you're discovered during the infection phase you will be attacked and must try to flee.
There more scope for later levels (especially the blood test scene!!) and of course final battle :-D
Ok, I have a confession to make - I never had an Atari as a kid. I didn't get one until I was in my 20's and as nostalgic as it was it didn't really hold any sentimental value for me.
My 'classic gaming days' are reserved for arcades, the Intellivision and the NES.
Grand opening to Idaho's first Toys "R" Us store in Boise, which opened on September 30, 1989. If you grew up in Boise in the early 80s and wanted to be a Toys "R" Us kid? You have to go to Portland, Tacoma, or Spokane for toys at Toys "R" Us. This was why people from Portland, Tacoma, and Spokane didn't want to move out of bigger cities and moved to Boise, but they finally got a Toys "R" Us store there in 1989.
In the 1980s, you've been missing out on Rainbow Brite toys you can't find anywhere else, you missed out the Atari Video Computer Systems, you missed out ColecoVisions and Intellivisions. When this Toys "R" Us opened there's already the Sega Genesis. The NES was still the most popular gaming console. The Sega Master System was still selling the games until 1991.
Apparently the sprite is a thief but it looks like a robo-steamboat to me, on the Mattel Intellivision. One of the first console games I played.

Popeye gives this game his personal recommendation!
Nintendo developed a Popeye arcade game in 1982. I played the arcade version ONCE and I distinctly remember it kicked my butt even AFTER I ate m' Spinach. Ouch!
The next year, Parker Brothers ported the game to the Atari 2600/5200, Intellivision, and ColecoVision, as this advertisement details. Scanned from the pages of Marvel Team-Up [Vol 1, #135]: Spider-man and Kitty Pryde (November, 1983).

I saw this game at Past Times Arcade last weekend, and had to get a photo. This was a game that was big on the Intellivision console in the early '80s. As kids, I was an Atari guy while my friend owned an Intellivision. It has some unique games and even more unique controllers. Instead of a joystick, you got a disc to rotate and it was a pain in the @$$. My friend had the advantage, and could smoke me on this game. After one round of trying this on Sunday, I'd be willing to bet he still could.
Gioco a calcio e a tennis

My first touch with technology was thanks to video games. I started when I was really young using Intellivision and Atari (my favorite game... ET); from there, I started using a Nintendo (American version) where I spend time killing ducks and playing Zelda.
When my economic situation got a little better I got my first Playstation; where I became a real games addict (a gamer). On this console, my favorite games where Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Silent Hill and Parasite Eve. Finally I got my Ps2 and I went crazy playing all my favorite games remakes and new versions and adding to the top list Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Echo Night: Beyond, NFS, GTA and even a gold game (I don't like sport video games).
Now that I consider myself a "grown up", I'm still thinking that video games (under control or supervition) are a good way to make young people spend time at home and not doing crazy/bad stuff. Obviously all excesses are wrong, but now that I have the possibility to "do" and not only "use"; I think this will be a great motivation to keep working with RenPy and Blender to make my OWN video game. (even if only is 1 minute long :P )

I went back in time! Kiiind of. When I finished this av, I thought, gee, I wish I could take pictures of her in S.I.C.! For those who don't remember it, S.I.C. was a really cool future distopia sim with its own combat. There were even robots to fight, if you weren't so keen on PvP.
So how'd I get my fancy new duds into the past for this photo? It's simple! Turn an old photo into a backdrop. There are plenty of photobooths out there, but I usually make mine the old fashioned way. This one was just two cylinders- one hollowed out, the other as the floor, and both set to fullbright. Really, really simple. If you want shadows as well, you can sometimes set the floor as not fullbright and cheat the backdrop and ground colors together with windlight adjustments.

From my personal collection. This is the third issue of Electronic Games Magazine. It is in a solid Very-Fine (8.0) condition.
Dear Microsoft,
This has got to be some kind of sick joke. Not once have I had a problem with any of my video game consoles, even dating back to my first Intellivision. I still have a working NES, Virtual Boy, Dreamcast, PS2 and original Xbox - yet tomorrow I am going to have to return to Best Buy to pick up my FOURTH Xbox 360.
In fact, at this point I don't believe I can find a single person on my friends list who has only had one Xbox 360. I love the console, I love the games, so please do not take this out of context when I say your hardware is a pile of shit. FOUR Microsoft, count em, FOUR Xbox 360s!?!?! What does that tell you?
The worst part is, my console has not red-ringed so if I did not have a replacement plan with Best Buy I would be shit out of luck. What happened this time was the 360 decided to no longer output video.
I tried changing cables, switching inputs and even trying a second TV - all to no avail. The unit powers on, the startup jingle plays but not a single display appears on screen.
I am at the point where I just throw my hands in the air and call bullshit on these shenanigans. If it wasn't for the quality of my friends list I would gladly switch to a PS3.
Seriously, what the fuck!??!
Love,
Tengaport
