What was life like on a Russian North Pole Drifting Station? Some scientists and researchers were kind enough to lend us photographs, taken on various stations.
Instrument masts were insulated using mounds of hay to help keep them upright and prevent the snow from melting out from around them.
Just prior to the start of World War II, the USSR set up a research camp on drifting ice near the North Pole in 1937. The drift continued for 274 days during which the station travelled more the 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles), obtaining the first scientific observations from that high latitude. In 1950, USSR set up a second station. Between 1937 to 1991, 88 polar crews drifted on ice flows for a total of 29,726 days. This research program is unequalled in the 20th century by duration, variety of observational material, and importance of scientific discoveries. On average researchers spent nine months at each camp.

Interesting thing: you can actually use the burner to make charcoal very cheaply, then use that to melt metal, too, in conjunction with forced air.
Basically, you can run it quickly and cheaply off propane, or maybe 3-4X slower, but ridiculously cheaply, off of wood.

PT&P manufactured 48" diameter pre-insulated pipe supports for a high-temperature pipeline at a phenol plant in Texas. Phenol is an important aromatic organic compound used in several products like plastics, nylon, epoxies, detergents, mouthwash, antiseptics, and other pharmaceutical drugs. PT&P has consistently supplied products to these types of plants for many years and has done work for most of the largest phenol plants in the world. The production of phenol from petroleum-derived feedstocks can involve temperatures, where large bore piping can reach 250°F. Phenols are used in a diverse range of end markets including construction, automotive, electronics, and fibre industries. Some other plants that utilize large bore piping at high temperatures, are Biofuels, Semiconductor, and Old Sands Extraction processing plants. These hot shoes, in particular, are designed for pipe sizes up to 48" in diameter. They include 6" thick by 4" width calcium silicate insulation, hot-dipped galvanized steel, and are designed for a load of 7,000 lb. Standard quality tests were performed before shipment. At Piping Technology and Products, we can supply a wide range of different types of pipe supports to meet your design specifications. This enables our clients to order from one vendor as opposed to several different vendors to manage the supply chain for project success in the most cost-effective manner while keeping deliveries on time. This order consisted of six different types of supports such as variable assemblies, constant support assemblies, sway struts, and pre-insulated pipe supports along with associated "off the shelf" hardware items. A total of 295 cryogenic pipe supports ranging from 4" to 38" NPS were designed for a LNG regasification facility in India. The shoe and bearing plates were fabricated from carbon steel, the jacket was fabricated from aluminized steel and includes a vapor barrier. 20 PCF high density polyurethane foam was used for the insulation.
The pictures above show cryogenic pipe supports designed by a Houston E&C firm for a LNG plant in Algeria. Piping Technology & Products, Inc. fabricated the these supports for a 14” pipe which operates below –50oF. Three different materials are used. The upper part which bolts to the pipe is fabricated from an alloy which retains its strength at low temperatures. The middle section is a Permali block selected because of its strength and durability and because it is a poor conductor of heat. The bottom plate of galvanized carbon steel is bolted to the Permali block. Permali is a phenolic laminate made from layers of wood impregnated under vacuum with a synthetic resin. A crossed orientation of the hard wood fibers is used to provide extra strength.

PT&P designed cold insulated pipe saddles with PTFE slide plates to provide sliding and guiding support for horizontal piping leading to an ethane cracker at a plant in Texas. The project fulfilled an emergency request when the client realized the product was missing at time of installation. The pipe saddles are fabricated from carbon steel with a hot-dipped galvinized finish for pipe sizes ranging from 3" to 56". They have a diameter of 40", height of 23-5/8", width of 42-1/2" and 11-7/8" BOP. Visual inspection and dimensional checks using a section of pipe were completed prior to shipment.
