My new boots arrived today. They are Salomon Avo, and cool. They will be put to a simple cold test today. It's not very wet out today, so that feature will be tested at a later date.
Geofoam for pipe insulation. The problem was in the original design. Rigid flat stock was originally used to insulate below grade transitions of the Trans-Alaska Pipe Line. Over the years the extreme arctic conditions exposed the problem. Freeze thaw cycles and high moisture destroyed the XPS application.
EPS Goefoam was the perfect solution for this problem for both utility protection and utility insulation simultaneously. Custom cut geofoam pipe jackets were the answer with low moisture absorption, light weight for ease of installation, stable thermal protection and locally produced. Geofoam solves a decade long problem for decades to come and extending the life of the Trans-Alaksa Pipe Line one transition point at a time.

i made mine reversible with a button on either side and used insulbright batting that insulates hot and cold. a beautiful eco friendly alternative to the disposable cardboard ones!
i whipped these all off in a day and am giving them as gifts to my office staff, try them!

Just a few more insulating blocks that I found while hiking the West Shore at Clark Mills, NY today. I also found a railroad spike which I though was pretty cool as you don't see too many of them along the Shore. The center insulating block is mint condition. Aside from the mud, it looks as if it was just manufactured. Insulating blocks were used to insulate and support the electrified third rail which provided the electricity that powered the Oneida Railway Company's trolley cars between Utica and Syracuse, NY. The Oneida Railway Company interurban shared the right-of-way with the West Shore Railroad between the two cities from 1907 to 1930.

The 15-10 insulated iCan.
When tested with 350 grams of 50/50 mix of pine and apple wood pellets, this burned for about 27 minutes and 20 seconds. The burn was a mess. Far too rapid a rate of gas release made for to much flame escaping the iCan [the bottom can] and far too much soot was ejected. The fuel to air ratio was saturated too much of the time.
Secondary air could be increased by adding three more 3/8th inch holes. This would also reduce the force of the up draft through the primary air holes which should slow the rate of gas release a bit. And or the number of primary air holes can be reduced. Or both.
At the end of the burn there was no smoke, no floaters, all biomass was 100% converted to carbon, the biochar had a very clean "nose", and there was very little creosote in the bottom of the iCan. in fact, most of the creosote deposited during the uninsulated test was burned off during the test with insulation.
Note: A thicker layer f insulation would be good. the outer surface of the insulation becomes too hot to touch within just a few minutes. Clearly too much heat is being lost laterally out of the system.
There is much work to be done to tune the iCans for use with insulation.
This was improved by adopting the triplet of triplets in the secondary air supply. But there is stil too much primary air which causes the air fuel mixture to be too rich too much of the time.

Floor insulated with 6inches clay stabilised vermiculite and ducting covered with approximately 3 inched firecob at this stage. Firing the stove has helped to dry the cob before adding successive layers.
