"Are you still in control of the boat that you row

Or do you still cling to me when its sinking

I never condemned you, I only consoled you

When candlelight made me a King..."

Coloured pencil and ink on $teinbach paper

Over a year ago when we were confined to avoid spreading a potentially deadly virus, I knew much of my photographic adventures would need to be curtailed. In similar time, something by Stephan Marjoram inspired me to fill a bit of time doing something creative. So I took up ink drawing. Just to see what I could do. And with zero photography projects in the queue, I wanted to fill this space with something. So here goes. I start out by aping M.Marjoram and, as you will later see, I take inspiration from many other sources.

Inktober 2025, DAY 5

My Inktober cat drawing today was just a quick one as I spent the rest of my drawing time working on this ink and watercolour ditty.

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Platinum Carbon fountain pen and Faber Castell watercolour pencils in a Stillman & Birn, Epsilon sketchbook.

...this is a beautiful ink. Impossible to capture the depth of the peacock tones and shimmering colours (at least for me)

...let's just say it's been a busy month (puppy) and I squeaked this one in the back door at the last minute. ;) I think I got hung up on the idea of the theme of rainy days that inspired this selection of ink, and just couldn't mentally get past it until today... quite frankly it really hasn't done much in the way of rain here to inspire a desire for it to go away.

Anyway, the colours are as follows:

Caran d'Ache ~ Magnetic Blue

Diamine ~ Twilight (the only one that is truly dip pen friendly like most inks from this English company)

J. Herbin ~ Gris Nuage

Sheaffer ~ Blue-Black (a surprisingly beautiful ink)

Waterman ~ Intense Black ( A black with amazing, hidden depths)

Paper, like usual is Stillman & Birn, Zeta.

Inspiration: My sample of the new Stillman & Birn Zeta series paper arrived

Result: Testing ~ no warping, no bleeding, forgives erasing and scrubbing

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Platinum Carbon Fountain Pen, Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour & Graphite Aquarelle 8B pencils in a Stillman & Birn Zeta series sketchbook

Location: Home

Note: Stillman & Birn creates my go-to sketch books of choice, in particular the Epsilon series is a dream to work on with pen and nib. They had recently launched a 180lb version of this smooth, ink loving paper called Zeta ~ which is incredibly forgiving to wet mediums. I had lamented that it was not yet available in Canada and today I was thrilled to receive a Zeta in the post to experiment on. Thank-you Stillman & Birn for not only the sample but for bringing yet another awesome paper choice to market for creative people!

...this is going to be so much fun!

Training myself to draw has been an interesting exercise. I studied the workds of Nicolas de Crecy, the Rat Rod artists, Stephan Marjoram, R.Crumb, S.Clay Wilson and many others. While I certainly will never develop the kind of talent they had, this has been a good way to "kill time" during the various periods of lockdown here in France during the Covid Pandemic.

Every month I challenge myself to create a drawing using only the shades in Goulet Pen Company's Inkdrop Sampler.

Ink on A4 paper. Sketched with pencil on location, inked at home. It's nice to be able to sketch outdoors again after the long cold winter! At least on a sunny day.
