On a couple of occasions lately, I had some extra time on my hands while I was waiting to pickup my wife at one of her appointments. Both times, I took walks along the Rideau River in the Ottawa neighbourhood of Vanier and began sketching. The sketches focused on an island in the river known as Cummings Island but they were made from two different perspectives: the top one was from the Riveraine Park in Vanier and the bottom one was from Strathcona Park in Sandy Hill. The island has been abandoned for nearly 100 years but has an interesting history. Given the opportunity, maybe I can find other perspectives to sketch the island.
Ink drawings in a Leuchttrum 1917 sketchbook, about 20 x 13 cm (8 x 5 inches). The top one done with Micron pens and the bottom one done with a Jinhao fude pen with Platinum carbon black ink.
Récemment, j'ai eu du temps libre à quelques reprises en attendant d'aller chercher ma femme à l'un de ses rendez-vous. Chaque fois, je me suis promené le long de la rivière Rideau, dans le quartier Vanier d'Ottawa, et j'ai commencé à dessiner. Mes croquis portaient sur une île de la rivière, l'île Cummings, mais ils étaient réalisés sous deux angles différents : celui du haut, du parc Riveraine à Vanier, et celui du bas, du parc Strathcona de la Côte-de-Sable. L'île est abandonnée depuis près de 100 ans mais possède une histoire intéressante. Si j'en avais l'occasion, peut-être je pourrais trouver des autres angles pour dessiner l'île.
Dessins à l'encre dans un carnet de croquis Leuchttrum 1917, environ 20 x 13 cm (8 x 5 pouces). Le dessin du haut a été réalisé avec des stylos Micron et celui du bas, avec un stylo Jinhao fude à l'encre noire de carbone Platinum.

The shop owner was just putting up the flag as I was passing and said it was ok to draw him. He told me that his shop and the one over the road were playing Fleetwood Mac as Christine McVis had just died. He said some don’t like the flag flying but that’s up to them, it’s his shop’s tradition. Had a nice chat about the (haunted) building. The perspective is a bit dodgy as the building and owner were drawn seperately.
What's a pool without a bar? At the Mirage Hotel, they also had large beautiful heated pools and, of course, a few bars for the thirsty. (You may have to take out a bank loan to purchase a couple of cocktails, but that seems to be the norm for Las Vegas.) While resting in a lounge chair, I began this sketch of the Dolphin Bar which was surrounded by plants and trees of all sorts of varieties.

(Vous devrez peut-être contracter un emprunt bancaire pour acheter quelques cocktails, mais cela semble être la norme à Las Vegas.) Alors que je me reposais dans une chaise longue, j’ai commencé ce croquis du Dolphin Bar, entouré de plantes et de arbres de toutes sortes de variétés.
I’m thinking that this imaginary toy warship was an extension of America’s power around the end of the 19th Century, give or take ten or fifteen years. The rear mast features a wooden tank that holds the crew’s rum rations for the voyage! This is a cropped 8 x 10 inch sketchbook page. The width is still 10 inches.
Well, I ended up inking this pencil sketch, mainly with a .003 Hybrid Technica Pentel marker. Then I used some Rembrandt Colored Pencils to finish the job. Originally I tried using watercolors in the dark gun ports, but made a botch of it. So I made a patch for that area, the bird and the flag. Those areas were morbidly dark and I saved the piece by making the corrections. I hope to post something about how I do this in the near future.
Quick sketch 6"x4" for #inktober . I used waterproof Faber Pitt artist black ink, and a Mitsubishi uni-ball eye in violet with added water on watercolour paper. The tropical uni-ball pens aren't waterproof, but a great way to add controlled ink with water!! This is for a friend who has been to Paris recently!! I had this view in mind before I came. To get the white of the chalk cliffs, I had to colour the sea and the grass, breaking my one colour rule.

Ink sketch of some roses I saw. I haven't taken them to color yet but maybe someday. This was done in a moleskine book. These are calle Knockout Roses I am told and are very hardy around Missouri area. They were a brilliant red.

Those binoculars are there to spot pesty rebels.
On a bike ride recently, I noticed a group of people exercing in the parking lot of Lac Leamy Park and began a quick sketch of them. It isn't the first time that I've noticed people that were working out there. In the spring and summer, I noticed many groups taking advantage of the outdoors to get in shape - seniors, expectant and new mothers, and families. Since this is Inktober, I thought that it would be appropriate to make this sketch in ink.
Récemment, lors d'une balade à vélo, j'ai remarqué un groupe de personnes faisant de l'exercice dans le stationnement du parc du lac Leamy et j'ai commencé à en faire un rapide croquis. Ce n'est pas la première fois que je remarque des gens qui exercisent là-bas. Au printemps et en été, j'ai remarqué que de nombreux groupes profitaient du plein air pour se mettre en forme - les personnes âgées, les femmes enceintes et les nouvelles mères et les familles. Puisqu'il s'agit d'Inktober, j'ai pensé qu'il serait approprié de faire ce croquis à l'encre.
