This is a sketch of the pool at the Mirage hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. It feels like you're in a tropical paradise with a waterfall and lagoon surrounded by the jungle. But, of course, you're in the middle of a large city built in a desert. I guess this is what Las Vegas is about - creating something that's artificial but so spectacular you can't resist visiting. And the pool was indeed beautiful and relaxing with the sound of falling water and the sight of tall palm trees gently swaying in the breeze.
Voici un croquis de la piscine de l’hôtel Mirage sur le Strip de Las Vegas. On a l'impression d'être dans un paradis tropical avec une cascade et un lagon entouré par la jungle. Mais, bien sûr, vous êtes au milieu d'une grande ville construite dans un désert. Je suppose que c’est l’objet de Las Vegas: créer quelque chose d’artificiel mais tellement spectaculaire que vous ne pouvez pas résister à la visite. Et la piscine était vraiment belle et relaxante avec le bruit de l'eau qui tombait et la vue de grands palmiers se balançant doucement dans la brise.

My great-grandfather's ink drawing of a locomotive. He would have drawn this in high school when he was about 15 years old. D.O.B. (geb.) 1857. Sheetsize is 50cm x 33cm.
Though, I am not sure whether 1857 is the date of birth. I have a dated photo of my great-grandfather who was born in 1830 and died in December 1914. Therefore, he would have been 27 when he drew this locomotive. This is a bit of a puzzle to me... Unless "Geb 1857" = "Get. 1857" (getan/done, in German).
Drawing straight lines appears to be in our (the 'Temperli') blood. In high school, I was the first girl who was permitted to join the boys in the elective of technical drawing. Though, my wonderful mum had to put in a really good word for me and, eventually, the teacher relented and I was able to join the class. Later on, I also managed to get into another boys' elective, woodwork, also as the first girl and a few more girls joined later on as well.
Great-grandfather, grand-father, as well as my father, became farmers. I became an architectural detail draftswoman - keeping the tradition of drawing straight lines in the family :)

The frogs stopped croaked once I sat down. Then I drew to the sound of birds, leaves in the breeze and light aircraft.
This was literally digging through my 'archives' to get this ink wash still life from my Fall 1971 Art Class at Concordia Teachers College (now Concordia University) in River Forest, Illinois.
(Yes, I saved my art work to use as examples when I would teach art later on.) Crates, horse collars, linking rods, and a horse skull composed this still life assignment, and we sat around it as a class, each drawing it from our own perspective. Once completed, the whole classes' projects were displayed, and it was like a virtual walk around of the still life in the art lab.

WANDER
This year, I will try to make INKTOBER drawings based on popculture, drawn without sketching first.
I had some trouble coming up with a subject for today. Made several drawings, but in the end I just went for Mando: no more wandering, this is the way.
Drawn to the roar of traffic on Route 66, cars driving out of the busy car park behind me and huge freight trains, one had five locomotives! It was loud, cold and windy, very stressy but I had to capture this classic diner.
No, this is not a scene from Paris, France. It's a sketch from my hotel room in Las Vegas along the famous Strip. Hotel resorts here follow theme-park themes and this one has a Parisian one with an architectural entranceway that suggest the Louve and a colourful hot air ballon equipped with large advertising monitors. Its Eiffel Tower is about half the size of the real one (164 m vs 324 m in height) but it's very impressive nonetheless. At night, it sizzles with a light show. Although this all sounds rather kinky, when you are there it really feels spectacular. At the Belagio Hotel there's a water-fountain show, at the Mirage Hotel there's a volcano eruption show, at the Venetian Hotel there are gondola rides and the Rialto Bridge next to St Mark's Tower and the Doge's Palace. And the list goes on.
Non, ce n'est pas une scène de Paris, en France. C'est un croquis de ma chambre d'hôtel à Las Vegas le long du célèbre Strip. Ici, les complexes hôteliers suivent les thèmes des parcs à thème. Celui-ci en possède un parisien avec une entrée architecturale évoquant le Louve et un ballon à air chaud coloré équipé de grands écrans publicitaires. Sa tour Eiffel est environ deux fois plus petite que la vraie (164 m contre 324 m de hauteur), mais elle n'en reste pas moins impressionnante. La nuit, il y a un spectacle de lumière qui grésille. Bien que tout cela semble plutôt bizarre, quand on est là-bas, on se sent vraiment spectaculaire. À l'hôtel Belagio, il y a un spectacle de fontaines, à l'hôtel Mirage, à un spectacle d'éruptions volcaniques, à l'hôtel Venetian, il y a des tours en gondole et le pont du Rialto, à côté de la tour Saint-Marc et du palais des Doges. Et la liste continue.
