Drawn when the ripples calmed down after a dog left the river. The tree was just as wobbly as it’s reflection.

"In the jungle, the mighty jungle
The lion sleeps tonight
In the jungle the quiet jungle
The lion sleeps tonight..."
(Music & lyrics by Solomon Linda, 1939)
As it was raining, I was looking for somewhere to draw indoors. All the cafes and bars were chocka but the Litfass Cafe was empty and had a view.
Last week I had an errand to run which involved waiting in my car for around 40 minutes or so. I decided to bring my Moleskine sketchbook with me and to draw some scene in the vicinity where I was parking. Street parking is never easy to find downtown, so I took the first one I saw. Unfortunately when I looked at the scene in front and to the side of me, there wasn't much to sketch. I resigned myself to just wait and rest, but glancing in my rear view mirror I saw a fairly good scene. This is the result. I drew it in pencil and inked it at home using some reference photos. What I didn't realize while drawing from my rear view mirror, was the fact that the mirror reversed the horizontal planes of the scene. I only noticed this much later when I was looking at some of my reference photos. While I could correct this digitally, I thought that I would leave it as I saw it.
I needed to get a higher view so I sat on the wall. I wasn’t sure if that was allowed but the leaf-blower didn’t say anything.
Drawn with Karlsruhe Urban Sketchers. The tractor had an attachment which was incredibly complicated so I just outlined it but that was also too complicated, so I left off more details.
Captain America in ink A4. This is a birthday present for a good friend, who loves Marvel comics & movies... It's all ink. As a challenge, I might do a large oil painting of this, as it's been very popular. For an American friend, Mount Rushmore in ink A3 size. I did the sky drawing with the original 13 star and 13 stripe (states) USA flag of the period. October is known as Inktober to a lot of sketchers worldwide. Started by Jake Parker in 2009, the idea is to draw one ink sketch each day during the month and to post it on social media - most notably on Twitter with the hashtag #Inktober or #Inktober 2018. Sounds easy? The basic idea is to stimulate your creative juices and to create positive drawing habits. Not everyone can do the full month, so you do what you can. This is one of my contributions.
My illustration is inspired by a sculpture at the Canadian History Museum known as 'Namaxsala : To travel in a boat together' by Mary Anne Barkhouse (below). Her sculpture derives from a story that her grandfather told her where he helped a wolf cross a treacherous stretch of water in a boat on the west coast of Canada in British Columbia. Namaxsala reflects on human relationships with the natural world. A short video on the making of the sculpture can be found at www.historymuseum.ca/maryannebarkhouse. The setting for the sculpture on the Ottawa River in front of the Parliament Buildings is magnificent. Viewed from inside the museum, it can look as though Namaxsala is right on the river ready to make its own passage.

SPIDERS
This year, I will try to make INKTOBER drawings based on popculture, drawn without sketching first.
Todays drawing is based on Spiderman by Marvel.

The shop owner was just putting up the flag as I was passing and said it was ok to draw him. He told me that his shop and the one over the road were playing Fleetwood Mac as Christine McVis had just died. He said some don’t like the flag flying but that’s up to them, it’s his shop’s tradition. Had a nice chat about the (haunted) building. The perspective is a bit dodgy as the building and owner were drawn seperately.
I’m thinking that this imaginary toy warship was an extension of America’s power around the end of the 19th Century, give or take ten or fifteen years. The rear mast features a wooden tank that holds the crew’s rum rations for the voyage! This is a cropped 8 x 10 inch sketchbook page. The width is still 10 inches.
Well, I ended up inking this pencil sketch, mainly with a .003 Hybrid Technica Pentel marker. Then I used some Rembrandt Colored Pencils to finish the job. Originally I tried using watercolors in the dark gun ports, but made a botch of it. So I made a patch for that area, the bird and the flag. Those areas were morbidly dark and I saved the piece by making the corrections. I hope to post something about how I do this in the near future.
Ink sketch of some roses I saw. I haven't taken them to color yet but maybe someday. This was done in a moleskine book. These are calle Knockout Roses I am told and are very hardy around Missouri area. They were a brilliant red.
Quick sketch 6"x4" for #inktober . I used waterproof Faber Pitt artist black ink, and a Mitsubishi uni-ball eye in violet with added water on watercolour paper. The tropical uni-ball pens aren't waterproof, but a great way to add controlled ink with water!! This is for a friend who has been to Paris recently!! I had this view in mind before I came. To get the white of the chalk cliffs, I had to colour the sea and the grass, breaking my one colour rule.
My dog is having a fan club and I made this for one lady who comes often just seeing my dog and her boyfriend complains when she's always late.
