Influence: 100 squares made for an exhibition at Lords Cricket Grounds, London.
Technique: Machine embroidered, machine pieced and hand sewn silk and organza; double sided quilt.
This quilt was part of an exhibition of quilts from members of the Irish Patchwork Society in 2006/07. This exhibition shows quilts from the past 25 years. For more information about patchwork and quilting in Ireland see www.irishpatchwork.ie
The Springfield Art Association will host an opening reception for a nationally juried ceramic exhibition entitled Shapes of Influence on Friday evening, August 3rd, from 5:30-7:30 PM. Awards and a gallery talk by juror Simon Levin will occur at 6:45 PM.
The show will be on display in the SAA's M.G. Nelson Family Gallery from August 3-September 1 and features work from over two dozen states and Canada.

People talk about who has made the largest influence on their lives and they usually list people like Albert Einstein, or Ghandi, or Martin Luther King Jr. Nobody wants to admit their heroes are people like Sgt. Bilko or Secret Squirrel.
After thinking about it, I realized that these two men have had the largest impact on me. Through them, I learned self-sacrifice, honor, the perils of substance abuse, and how to carry yourself like a man. Their influence has led me to become a humanist, an environmentalist, and a whole slew of ist's and ism's that have ultimately made me a better and stronger person.
Not bad for a fictional character and a persona created to sell tickets.

Aeromach USA’s latest product, influenced by Harley-Davidson’s Dark Custom line of motorcycles, is the black anodized Maltese Cross mirror. The mirror is just the first in their new line of products targeted at hard-riding cruiser, bobber and chopper jockeys.
“This is an ideal product for the slammed, chopped, and factory Harley-Davidson and v-twin motorcycles,” said Paul Aiken, President of Aeromach.
Aeromach’s line of billet designed mirrors with midnight black anodizing compliments the latest iteration of Harley-Davidson’s blacked-out die-hard classics including the Fat Bob, Night Rod, Cross Bones, Sportster Forty-Eight, Iron 883, and Nightster.
The Maltese Cross mirror is built in America, down in the NASCAR territory of North Carolina, and is handcrafted with aircraft-quality 6061-T6 billet aluminum. The mirror housing is designed to be maintenance-free and deliver a strong attitude.
As with all Aeromach mirrors, the Maltese Cross features distortion-free glass instead of plastic. The combination of glass and billet aluminum density delivers as much as 40% increased clarity over stock-cast mirrors. This reduces the mirror vibration inherent in v-twin cruisers, bobbers, and choppers. Riders experience optical clarity across the entire RPM range.
Each custom-designed Cross is manufactured from state-of-the-art CNC machines and then anodized. Each is packaged in a scratch-free enclosure to ensure a flawless product when received.
Enthusiast can mix and match from a full line of chrome or anodized billet stems. This allows bikers to dial-in the custom look of their motorcycle to their personal tastes.

P.S. more influences, seeing all great shots my contacts can do manual and loving to try get a good manual focus myself.... I posted a "wanted message" for an old manual lens on a Belgium forum.... gonna look for one tomorrow....maybe I'll get a picture with it. But weekend is very busy so not sure.

The three men in this photo are sitting near the door of a polling place, hoping to influence voters in the moments before they step into the booth. In the past, I've even been blocked by candidates and their staff, as I tried to enter the door. Once, when I reported to authorities inside that a woman with a clipboard wouldn't let me in without first hearing her speech, the person in charge shrugged and said, "It's a free country."
The guys in this photo had been standing earlier in the day, handing out printed propaganda.
In the past, and in other places, I've stood in plain view to photograph this sort of activity. Invariably, the staffers ask me why I'm pointing a camera at them. I just say that I'm doing a blog. So this time, I took a shot from my car as I waited for the red light.

I find the people you meet influence a place more than anything else a place offers. You can go to the dreariest of towns, meet people and have a great time and it'll change your perspective on that town, in a positive way, forever.
That was kind of the case with New York. Even on the flight over I met a crazy house music producer, then an old work colleague who took me along to drinks where i met Jessica, who in turn left a profound impact on me, and over the next days i had the fortune of experiencing a whole new side of the city. The brothers arrived, and we got down to what we came here to do. There's also the lesbian yoga instructor - and a guy I studied with who now runs his own studio in hipstertown.
Laughs were shared with everyone I met, and as I fill out my travel diary, i'm staggered at the sheer volume of what happened each day.
To paraphrase what Jessica said - be happy with the time you have with people, rather than the time you don't.
And so a lonely photograph of pier stumps isn't an ending, rather, a symbol of endurance for what the future may bring.

This bear is influenced by the most famous of Shakespeare’s stage directions ‘Exit, pursued by a bear’ from Act III of The Winter’s Tale. The bard is from the Midlands and Shakesbear is a fitting tribute to mark the recent 400th anniversary of his death. The design references the iconic portrait of the playwright by Engraver Martin Droeshout from 1623.
Repeating The Big Hoot’s multi-award-winning formula, Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity and Wild in Art have teamed up once again to present The Big Sleuth!
To most people, the word ‘sleuth’ means a private detective, but it’s also the collective noun for a group of bears! Bizarre but true. Birmingham has brought both definitions together this summer by bringing the sun bear, the world’s smallest species of bear (now threatened with extinction), to the region for the second free, public-art trail!
The trail, which culminates on Sunday 17th September, is hoping to attract thousands of families, tourists and residents to the region. Hoping they discover places they’ve never visited before, as well as appreciate the beautiful pieces of art!
Each striking sculpture on the trail tells a different story, whether it is raising awareness of the children’s hospital, the plight of the sun bear, celebrating a community, the city’s industrial heritage or a famous film character or artist.
At the end of the trail, the large bears together with the special celebrity bear cubs will be auctioned off in October to raise vital funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity. The Big Sleuth’s predecessor, The Big Hoot, raised over £500,000 for the charity at auction, and The Big Sleuth aims to do the same.
The Big Sleuth bear has been created specifically for Birmingham.
Created by Guy McKinley and developed by Wild in Art, our bear sculpture has been designed to act as a canvas for artists, schools and communities to showcase the creativity and uniqueness of Birmingham. The world’s smallest species of bear, the Sun Bear is also known as the Honey Bear as it likes to eat vast quantities of it - using its trademark incredibly long tongue to scoop it all up. The Sun Bear originates from South Asia and will bring out the explorer and traveller in all of us to ensure we all get more active to walk, jog, run or cycle the trail.
I was certainly more influenced in my teens. however, as my confidence and personal style has developed i understand more that everyone looks different.
I am still wringing some exposures from the same small section - it helps as I avoid standing on the soft wet lawn.
