The rocks at Mount Barrow include Jurassic-era dolomite, with a local granite outcrop, and various surficial materials such as coarse diamictons and boulders, which are the result of past glacial and periglacial activity. The common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) (formerly European cuckoo) is a member of the cuckoo order of birds, Cuculiformes, which includes the roadrunners, the anis and the coucals.
This species is a widespread summer migrant to Europe and Asia, and winters in Africa. It is a brood parasite, which means it lays eggs in the nests of other bird species, particularly of dunnocks, meadow pipits, and Eurasian reed warblers.
The common cuckoo is a brood parasite; it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. At the appropriate moment, the hen cuckoo flies down to the host's nest, pushes one egg out of the nest, lays an egg and flies off. The whole process takes about 10 seconds. A female may visit up to 50 nests during a breeding season. Common cuckoos first breed at the age of two years.

For the Macro Monday challenge "Zed" (May 10th 2021)
The challenge is that the word you choose must include the letter Z.
Given the long freezing winter we have endured, it was maybe not surprising that I chose "froZen" and looked out the ice-cube tray!
This is a snail shell frozen in tonic water, which I hoped would give me lots of bubbles. It was a bit disappointing, as it was cloudy when frozen - but some of the cubes came out with 'holes' that looked like ice caverns. It was a fun way to spend a morning, chasing the shots before the ice cubes melted!
The ice cubes are about 4cmx3cm.

The ribbon eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita), also known as the leaf-nosed moray eel or bernis eel, is a species of moray eel, the only member of the genus Rhinomuraena. What is now known as R. quaesita also includes the former R. amboinensis. R. quaesita was used for blue ribbon eels and R. amboinensis for black ribbon eels, but these are now recognized as the same species. The ribbon eel is found in lagoons and reefs in the Indo-Pacific ocean, ranging from East Africa to southern Japan, Australia and French Polynesia. This species is widely distributed and is frequently seen by divers in Indonesian waters with their heads and anterior bodies protruding from crevices in sand and rubble habitats from very shallow to about 60 m. Although generally placed in the moray eel family Muraenidae , it has several distinctive features leading some to place it in its own family, Rhinomuraenidae.
The ribbon eel bears a resemblance to a mythical Chinese dragon with a long, thin body and high dorsal fins. The ribbon eel can easily be recognised by its expanded anterior nostrils. They are well known for their characteristic jaws that are frequently opened very widely when a diver approaches. Based on observed colour changes, it is generally considered a protandric hermaphrodite (first male, then changing sex to female), although this has yet to be confirmed. Colour change related to sex change is not known from any other moray eel species. The presumed juveniles and subadults are jet black with a yellow dorsal fin, in adult males the black is replaced by blue, and adult females are entirely yellow or yellow with some blue to the posterior. The blue adult males range from 65 to 94 cm (26 to 37 in) in length, while the larger yellow females can reach up to 130 cm (51 in). Mabini, South Luzon, Philippines

The towering cliffs of hard metamorphic rocks sit above the sculpted granodiorite in this pristine gorge. Masons Quarry includes drillholes, large abraded gnammas, and polished surfaces because some distance upstream the creek cuts through Tertiary granites which load this stream in floodtime with ample tools to polish this granodiorite. The foreground section of Masons Quarry is quite a deep and attractive rock pool.
There is much to see and much to explore and ponder here. Birdlife, crustaceans, eels, and macropods, echidnas and a diversity of birds including the Top Knot pigeons feeding in the forest canopies, scrub turkeys scratching their huge nests on the forest floor, and blue cranes catching and feeding on the bivalves and blue-claw yabbies in the pools. Then there are the huge wasps nests, the big fossils and around it all the variety, the changing light and moods of the stream, and the awesome cliffs and thrust faults, and the torment of floods.
When the air is still the pools are like broken mirrors; when the afternoon sea breeze arrives the ruffled surfaces are a kaleidoscope of reflecting fragments of colour.
This is my world to value and protect, to appreciate and seek to understand.
This is a glimpse of an area that few knew about and fewer ever explored. Since retiring, we have set about exploring it and building the bank of scientific knowledge of the area, in order to advocate for its protection and inclusion in the protected areas estate. Our efforts have been successful, so now it is time to create the wealth of artistic and photographic record of the area. It is a big area with several gorges and many waterfalls, some majestic ones. And here, the flooding water armed with abrasive granite sand from upstream and sculpted, drilled and polished this "quarry-like" section in the gorge. We love it as sunlight highlights, shadows mystify, water reflects and breezes create shimmers on the pool - all delighting the senses yet home to a myriad of wildlife.

15 minutes barely gave us enough time to walk from the parking lot to the front of the mosque. 😞
With so many tourists and worshippers on the ground and not knowing the layout, taking good photos would be a challenge.
Goodness gracious, so glad I was able to see the potential of the shadows from the surrounding structures. 😁

Most of the group spent about 25 minutes on the ground with the exception of the few of us, we needed another ~10 minutes or so.
Ooopsie, but no one gave us a mean look; phew!😅
The next stop was the hotel, so why couldn't they give us an hour here?!? 🤔

Swallowtail butterflies are large, colorful butterflies in the family Papilionidae, and include over 550 species. Though the majority are tropical, members of the family inhabit every continent except Antarctica. The family includes the largest butterflies in the world, the birdwing butterflies of the genus Ornithoptera.
Swallowtails have a number of distinctive features; for example, the papilionid caterpillar bears a repugnatorial organ called the osmeterium on its prothorax. The osmeterium normally remains hidden, but when threatened, the larva turns it outward through a transverse dorsal groove by inflating it with fluid.
The forked appearance of the swallowtails' hindwings, which can be seen when the butterfly is resting with its wings spread, gave rise to the common name swallowtail. As for its formal name, Linnaeus chose Papilio for the type genus, as papilio is Latin for "butterfly". For the specific epithets of the genus, Linnaeus applied the names of Greek heroes to the swallowtails. The type species: Papilio machaon honored Machaon, one of the sons of Asclepius, mentioned in the Iliad.

Reddish brown above with a white belly. 1 white stripe bordered by 2 black stripes on sides ending at the rump. 2 white stripes on back much thinner than side stripes. Dark center stripe down the back. Pale facial stripes above and below the eyes. Tail brown on tip and edged with black. Prominent ears.
The Eastern Chipmunk's habitat includes open deciduous woodlands, forest edges, brushy areas, bushes and stone walls in cemeteries and around houses.
They range from southeastern Canada and the north-eastern U.S. east from North Dakota and eastern Oklahoma and south to Missisippi, northwest Carolina and Virginia.

Another hibiscus flower in my backyard. FYI, I do not live in a mobile home park like the map says, I live in a house northeast of where I placed the image.
Fort Myers Yellow is often seen grown as a 4-6' high tree standard or braid.
Hibiscus is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. The genus is quite large, comprising several hundred species that are native to warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. Member species are renowned for their large, showy flowers and those species are commonly known simply as "hibiscus", or less widely known as rose mallow. Other names include hardy hibiscus, rose of sharon, and tropical hibiscus.
The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, as well as woody shrubs and small trees.
Several species are widely cultivated as ornamental plants, notably Hibiscus syriacus and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis.
A tea made from hibiscus flowers is known by many names around the world and is served both hot and cold. The beverage is known for its red colour, tart flavour, and vitamin C content.

The project to redevelop Cardiff Bay includes stretches along the two rivers that feed into the Bay - the Taff, and the one in this image, the Ely.
Modern apartment blocks overlook the largest of the marinas in the Bay - marinas that between them provide berths for over 1000 pleasure craft.
My significant other half suggested a 'mystery' outing today, to include breakfast. I had no idea of our destination until we arrived at Salt Café by the water at Wicor, already busy at an early hour.
Breakfast was great and then Ray proposed a walk along the shore to Portchester Castle. The route there and back, along the Coastal Path, was a total of 3.5 miles, the furthest I have managed for ages. It was strange to reflect that this time last year I could barely walk, was in a lot of pain and using a mobility scooter.
I've never given much credence to miracles. However, being able to walk freely after a hip replacement/my own hard work at prescribed exercises, does seem miraculous.
The weather was hot and we found a pub in Portchester for a pit stop. Luckily, on the return to Wicor, there were seats overlooking the water, plus ice-cream, cold drinks and cookies half way along.
I have put together this collage to remember what, for me, has been a momentous day.

I need to include another photo from Ayutthaya in Thailand. Otherwise, I'll never get to all of them.
Technically, I'm standing in one of the temple buildings of Wat Mahathat, even though the outer walls are unfortunately missing.
At the end of this former hall, where the altar would be in our churches, there's a Buddha sitting.
By the way, to my left behind me is the tree with the head in its roots, which I also have a photo of.
Well, I'll show you all of them eventually. It just takes a while.
Ich muss mal wieder ein Foto von Ayutthaya in Thailand mit unterbringen. Sonst werden die nie alle.
Hier befinde ich mich technisch gesehen in einem der Tempelgebäude von Wat Mahathat, auch wenn leider die Außenwände abhanden gekommen sind.
Am Ende dieser ehemaligen Halle, wo in unseren Kirchen der Altar steht, sitzt hier ein Buddha.
Links hinter mir befindet sich übrigens der Baum mit dem Kopf in seinen Wurzeln, von dem ich auch noch eine Foto habe.
Naja, irgenwann werd ich euch die alle gezeigt haben. Es dauert eben nur etwas.
