Le cimetière marin a été implanté, en 1788, sur ce site de la Baie de Saint-Paul, premier lieu de peuplement par les français de l'Île de la Réunion (appelée à l'époque Île Bourbon). Il comprend dans sa partie nord les sépultures de vieilles familles de Saint-Paul : les Panon, Desbassyns, Delanux, Desjardins, KerAnval,..ou de personnes décédées lors de leur passage comme Eraste Feuillet ou les marins du bâteau naufragé Ker.Anna.
Le cimetière a subi une série de catastrophes naturelles depuis le raz de marée d'août 1883 provoqué par l'éruption du volcan de Krakatoa jusqu'aux cyclones récents. Il a été restauré dans les années 70.
Les restes mortels du grand poète, Leconte de Lisle, né à Saint-Paul en 1818 et mort à Louveciennes en 1894 y ont été transférés en 1977.

O Santuário de Nossa Senhora dos Verdes encontra-se implantado numa zona isolada da freguesia de Forninhos, sobre o rio Dão. O recinto é rodeado por pinheiros e, em frente, ergue-se um cruzeiro de granito. É um lugar de grande veneração para os habitantes locais, pois a Senhora dos Verdes protege as actividades agrícolas, que defende das pragas e fenómenos naturais, velando para que todos tenham boas colheitas. Esta devoção deve remontar ao ano de 1720, quando uma praga de gafanhotos se abateu sobre os campos da região, desaparecendo, somente, graças à intervenção de Nossa Senhora.
Assim o relata a pintura que se encontra na capela, e que exibe a seguinte legenda:
MILAGRE QVE FES N.S. DOS VERDES EM AS SEARAS DESTRVIDAS DOS BICHOS E FAZENDO HVA MVI DEVOTA PROSIÇAM OS MORADORES CIRCVM VEZINHOS, FOI NOSSA SENHORA SERVIDA QVE SE APLACASSE ESTA PRAGA. ERA DE 1720.
Ainda que pouco comum, esta invocação repete-se, pelo mesmo motivo, num santuário de Abrunhosa-a-Velha (Mangualde) e numa outra ermida próxima de Manteigas (COSTA, PORTUGAL, 1985, p. 189).
O santuário, edificado, muito possivelmente, com o objectivo de agradecer a Nossa Senhora o milagre concedido, estava concluído quando o então padre, Baltazar Dias, respondeu, em 1758, ao inquérito feito a todas as freguesias do país, as chamadas Memórias Paroquiais. Nesse texto, afirma-se que "a capela (...) fora do povo posta mas pertence à mesma igreja (paroquial) (...) são obrigados à capela da Senhora dos Verdes várias procissões em alguns dias do ano principalmente nos dias santos do Espírito Santo" (COSTA, PORTUGAL, 1985, p. 188).
Todavia, a arquitectura do edifício aponta para uma construção anterior, mais próxima do século XVII, pelo que deixamos em aberto a possibilidade de já existir no local uma ermida, enriquecida no decorrer do século XVIII, por uma campanha decorativa barroca.
Certo é que, nesta capela, caracterizada por uma forte sobriedade arquitectónica, se destacam o remate superior do portal (frontão interrompido, com nicho formado por volutas e concheados), e os vãos da fachada principal (com moldura curvilínea). Estes revelam um maior sentido decorativo e uma linguagem mais próxima do ritmo barroco.
Já o interior foi alvo de uma campanha setecentista, responsável pela uniformização do espaço, através dos tectos em caixotões, na nave e capela-mor, e dos retábulos em talha dourada. Assim, e se no corpo da capela as pinturas do tecto exibem motivos representativos de diversos santos, na capela-mor ganha preponderância a temática relacionada com Nossa Senhora e Cristo.
Todo o conjunto de obra de talha inscreve-se no denominado estilo nacional, ou barroco pleno, mas com recurso à policromia. Exemplo desta situação é o retábulo-mor, com marmoreados fingidos, e colunas torsas a enquadrar os três arcos, entre os quais se destaca o central, por albergar a imagem de Nossa Senhora dos Verdes.
Uma das soluções mais interessantes encontra-se no arco triunfal, totalmente revestido por talha dourada, inscrevendo na composição os dois altares colaterais. Na zona superior, desenha-se um frontão, interrompido por uma cartela ladeada por anjos. Desta forma, os caixotões do tecto prolongam-se através da estrutura do arco, que recorda um enorme retabulo, cujo espaço correspondente à tribuna é preenchido, num plano mais afastado, pelo retábulo-mor. O que, em última análise, confere uma dupla projecção à imagem da padroeira da capela.

The Story
When I was young, maybe 10, I was playing this running game on the playground during recess and ran into the telephone company building (AT&T, only game in town then) that bordered the playground.
